    FYI… Elliot updated wp-hashcash for BuddyPress.

    Okay… I just installed wp-hashcash and pasted in the function mentioned near the top of page 1 of this thread. Let’s see if that stops the *$^#%&@ SPAMers :o)

    Thanks Andrea_r

    So can you tell me how to block signups from anyone with a domain that has a .info extension? I’m sure that 99.9% of people with .info domains are SPAMers. I found the “Banned Email Domains” setting in WPMU but cannot find any documentation about how to use a wildcard or regex in that field. It’s not any ONE fully qialified domain for me… it’s dozens of different domains all ending in .info.

    I’ve done everything in my list above (except CAPTHA or Hashcash) and I’m STILL getting signups from these bastards. Maybe I should try Hashcash. You’re right, the htaccess rule above did nothing. Driving me CRAZY!!! Buggers.

    So to sum up:

    • Change your signup slug
    • Add some required custom profile fields (or use the hashcash trick posted at the start of this thread)
    • Disable “Allow blog administrators to add new users to their blog via the Users->Add New page”
    • Delete BuddyPress credit in footer.php
    • Delete wp-signup.php
    • Create a robots.txt file with User-agent: * Disallow: /register/ (or whatever your slug is)
    • If all else fails, use CAPTHCA or preferably a simple random question (what colour is snow)

    Am I wrong or missing anything?

    Also… all of my SPAM registrations were coming from .info domains. I added this to my .htaccess file but I’m not sure it’s correct. I found a million examples via Google search for how to ban full domains or subdomains… but nothing about blocking an entire extension (i.e… whatever.info). Anyway, this is what I wrote:

    RewriteCond %{REMOTE_HOST} \\.info$
    RewriteRule .* - [F]

    I’m starting to get hit now :o( I have had a custom slug for weeks. I added a robots file today disallowing bot access from /my-signup-slug/ and also installed invisible defender but I’m still getting spam registrations. I also just deleted my wp-signup.php file. I’m going to try hashcash. I’m also considering a htaccess file that simply bans ALL traffic to the entire website from Russia, China and any .info domains.

    This is somewhat like asking someone for a good chiropractor… in the immortal words of George Costanza… “Oh yeah, everybody’s guy is the best” LOL.

    My “guy”? In Canada… I use iWeb for dedicated hosting. Core 2 Duo w/ 1GB and 1.5T traffic is $99/mo. And they run clearance deals all the time.

    You can set your header image in your CSS but you’ll have to add the !important keyword to your declaration in order for it to override the “custom header”. The custom header code is in functions.php by the way.

    The only plugin I want is an Events plugin. Not very creative… I know. LOL.

    p.s. BTW Peter… Facebook actually does have regular old fashioned linear forums.

    I was actually going to use this one since I don’t need registration or payment: https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/calendar/

    Sounds good. I’ll hold off a little longer :) I was losing faith and perfectly happy launching with a simple WordPress plugin for now. But an integrated solution would be better of course. That said… I will really need recurring events… so who knows… I may STILL end up going with a WP plugin for the time being. Then maybe switch to bp-events in 2011.

    I can’t wait for bp-events any longer. I’m going to just use a simple WordPress plugin for now. Hopefully at some point bp-events or some other BuddyPress solution will happen. Given the pace and history of development… bp-events 1.2 could be months away. Or not. Hard to say.

    Deactivate BuddyPress and then reactivate. For good measure… add a description to the blog in question. Previous to the fix… the blogs that would go missing from lists and menus were ones that did not have a description. Shouldn’t matter now that the bug is fixed… but you could try it anyway.

    You can actually do just about anything in WordPress if you really know your stuff… so for me it comes down to usability. Joomla and Drupal both tend to be very complicated for the average (or even ‘expert’) user. For usability, no one comes close to WordPress… in my opinion.

    Pages are for static content like “contact us”. They are organized and retrieved by a fixed hierarchy and cannot be tagged or categorized.

    Posts are for topical content like news articles. They can be organized and retrieved in and a multitude of ways… by tag, category, date, month, etc. You can even setup a custom taxonomy to add custom metadata to posts… like for instance… if it were a movie site… cast, release date, genre, etc. By default… with most themes… the homepage will simply spit out a stream of your most recent posts. But again, you can customize things in a million different ways if you know your stuff.

    So you have blog creation turned on in Site Admin > Options?

    @takeo

    Participant

    Yes. I’ve added functions to my child via functions.php. As long as the functions have unique names it won’t break anything. Something else must be wrong.

    You have to create a new WordPress Page called “Blog” and then go into “Settings > Reading” and switch the front page mode to static with the “Blog” page selected as your “Posts page”. I think it will use the index.php template. Do you have a custom homepage?

    Cool. bp-events for 1.2 has a hint of vapourware about it. I’m sure Erwin is just swamped with actual work, life, other projects… etc… but anyway….

    @marcus… a few weeks would be a dream come true. Many of us have been hoping for a stable bp-events release since November.

    Not sure if this answers the question or not:

    Checkout DJ Pauls’ plugin linked to above. It might work. Although it looks like it’s not been updated since Dec. 22.

    There are lots of regular WP event plugins. I’d suggest searching on the wordpress.org site / forums. But for a BuddyPress integrated plugin… there are only two… one which is a WordPress MU Premium (paid) plugin… and bp-events from Erwin… the development of which seems to come in spurts. Last I heard… Erwin was pretty far along in making it 1.2 compatible and was mostly just working on an Ajax calendar feature. Hopefully it will be finished up soon-ish :o)

    @takeo

    It’s not in the plugin area on this site (thought it would be)… but DJ Paul mentioned it in this thread… near the bottom of the first page. Not sure if it works with 1.2 or if it even works at all yet! Sorry if I may have steered your wrong. Seems to be my theme for this thread. LOL :o)

    Cool. I could be wrong but I think that on Facebook the idea of “like” is not just to tell someone you like something… but to also modify the algorithm on the news feed. That’s getting really complex though… and would be irrelevant to BuddyPress since BuddyPress shows ALL activity anyway. Well… you can filter it of course… but there is no algorithm that decides that it thinks you might be most interested in.

    Paste this into a ‘styles.css’ file in ‘themes/child-theme/’. It works. I tested it. I had not tested any of the solutions above. Just wrote them off the top of my head. I had missed the hash mark for starters on the sidebar-login-form declaration. The ‘echo’ statement was correct though. <<<Blah … Blah; is a valid php syntax. Altho’ I’ve never used it.

    /*
    Theme Name: Child Theme
    Template: bp-default
    Tags: buddypress
    */

    /* Parent styles */
    @import url( ../../plugins/buddypress/bp-themes/bp-default/_inc/css/adminbar.css );
    @import url( ../../plugins/buddypress/bp-themes/bp-default/_inc/css/default.css );

    /* Custom styles */
    #sidebar-login-form,
    #login-text{display: none;}

    Your @import paths were probably just wrong.

    /*
    Template: bp-default
    Tags: buddypress
    */

    /* Parent styles */
    @import url( ../../plugins/buddypress/bp-themes/bp-default/_inc/css/adminbar.css );
    @import url( ../../plugins/buddypress/bp-themes/bp-default/_inc/css/default.css );
