In reply to: Nothing appearing under "My Blogs"
Marked resolved… as discussed in a duplicate thread here: https://buddypress.org/forums/topic/user-blogs-gone-what-do-i-do-now
There is a plugin called “Postcard” which offers simple front end blogging.
In reply to: User Blogs gone! What do I do nowFixed! I deactivated / reactivated. That didn’t fix it. Then I added a description for my blog and deactivated / reactivated. Fixed! Thanks Andy!
Yup… it’s not a widget. Two options which would involved making a child theme. Don’t worry… it’s really simple: https://codex.buddypress.org/how-to-guides/building-a-buddypress-child-theme/
- Make a child theme with a custom sidebar.php file and comment out or delete the login block of code.
- Make a child theme and add this line to your “style.css” file
#login-text, sidebar-login-form {display: none;}I suppose you could also try adding the code below to a “custom.php” file and putting it in your plugins directory (no child theme required)… but now I’m just getting silly. LOL (I haven’t tested this BTW).
<?php
add_action('wp_head', 'hide_login');
function hide_login() {
echo <<<CSS
<style type='text/css'>
#login-text, sidebar-login-form {display: none;}
</style>
CSS;
}
?>or even this! (very silly)
<?php
add_action('bp_before_sidebar_login_form', 'open_login_comment');
function open_login_comment() { echo '<!--' }
add_action('bp_after_sidebar_login_form', 'close_login_comment');
function close_login_comment() { echo '-->' }
?>So how to you intend for people to login? Just via the regular WordPress login?
In reply to: Normal WordPress Themes?I’m not sure… but the plugin was released by Andy who is the main core developer for BuddyPress. I didn’t even know about the plugin until I responded to your post. I knew there was a thread on here about your question about a week ago… so I just did a search.
In reply to: Normal WordPress Themes?In reply to: STOP feature-polls for BP 1.3@DJPaul and everyone… it’s great that BP is asking for our feedback. Many projects don’t do that. But in the end, I think the golden rule should be that 80% of the features should be useful to 80% of the users. Privacy fits within that rule. I’m not convinced that anything else does. When you build software with every possibly feature… it often ends up doing none of them particularly well. I look forward to voting in the poll once the list of ideas is compiled.
In reply to: User Blogs gone! What do I do nowThanks Andy! That was a weird and tricky one to track down. My test install (the broken one) is running on my local box at home right now. I’ll test this tonight and report back.
In reply to: User Blogs gone! What do I do now[delete] somehow my post got double-posted.
In reply to: User Blogs gone! What do I do now@Andy: Yes. I was never able to reliably replicate the problem and outline specific steps… but when it DID happen… it was always sometime after added a new user.
The only way I could replicate it was by using an old DB that had the problem. r2755 didn’t fix it in that case… but maybe that’s to be expected since that DB was generated by a pervious version of BP. Not sure. All I know is… my current installs are all fine for now.
In reply to: sub domainsI’m not sure how they limit it but I’m quite certain it’s not just a .htaccess thing. Your other option would be plain old subdirectory blogs instead. That should be unlimited.
In reply to: Nothing appearing under "My Blogs"@Andy: I can’t get my SVN client to work so I grabbed the zip file from here: https://trac.buddypress.org/browser/branches/1.2 I assume that’s the same? r2755
Short story… didn’t fix it. Here are my steps:
- Set up a fresh host and database
- Installed WPMU 2.9.1.1
- Installed BP 1.2 stable
- Everything works
- Imported my broken database completely overwriting the fresh database – Blog lists are broken
- Installed BP 1.2 r2755 (Deactivate BP. Overwrite files. Active BP) – Blog lists are still broken
Would it help if I sent you a mySQL dump of the broken database for you to test with? It’s only 980KB.
In reply to: Nothing appearing under "My Blogs"@Andy: I have a backup of an old database that was having this problem (I solved it by creating a fresh DB). I’ll setup a test site now and report back shortly.
In reply to: User Blogs gone! What do I do nowI was the first to post about this issue actually (in that other thread). I’ve tried to reliably reproduce it and I’m afraid I cannot. Blogs are set to public. It always seems to happen when a new user registers and/or is promoted to a blog admin. I’m not sure if this is a BP bug or a WPMU bug… but I couldn’t find anything about this issue on the WPMU forums. At one point even my original admin user (username “admin”) couldn’t see any blogs listed. And I went into Site Admin > Options and switched the order of the admin usernames listed (on a lark) and that fixed it?! Very random… and bizarre. I wish I could outline steps to reproduce it.
p.s. unlike zageek… everything else is working perfectly. The only issue is no blogs being listed under “My Blogs” in the admin bar and in the users profile. So it’s not really all that critical. Everything still works. But it’s confusing to see a “Blogs (3)” tab in the profile with no results… and it’s a pain to have to type “wp-admin” in the address bar of your browser rather than being able to use the shortcuts in the admin bar.
First I’ve hear of that. I’ll have to do some searching. I’ve never considered @import to be “expensive”.
In reply to: Alternate Stylesheets for different sections@Boone: Yah… actually… I do that all the time. Usually just for the odd tweak tho’… something I want to hide on a .home page or whatever.
In reply to: Alternate Stylesheets for different sectionsThe code you’re looking for already exists in header.php… in the navigation bar section. It’s used for navigation tab highlighting… i.e… adding a class like “current” or whatever to the LI tags. Just copy/paste and modify.
Why not just install the backwards compatibility plugin?
In reply to: Nothing appearing under "My Blogs"The problem is that it seems to be random. I was hoping I’d be able to replicate it after I saw it happen again last night… but no dice. There’s no point creating a defect ticket if you can’t outline the steps to replicate the defect. If the developers can’t replicate it… they can’t fix it.
I searched on the WPMU forums too but didn’t find anything related to this issue.
With no user blogs at all, just the main blog, if you create a new user they have no blogs listed under “My Blogs”. That’s normal I guess since they did not create the main blog. So I log in as admin and make the new user an admin on the main blog. Now the main blog shows up under “My Blogs”. Also normal. The weird thing is that if I then REMOVE their admin privileges… the main blog STILL shows up under “My Blogs”. That doesn’t seem right.
Can anyone here remember what they did just before they started seeing the problem of disappearing blog listings / menus? Also… what are your privacy settings?
In reply to: Nothing appearing under "My Blogs"Okay… I fixed it. All I did was switch the order of the admin usernames list under “Site Admin > Options > Administration Settings: Site Admins” and the blogs listing magically returned. Very strange. This should be completely irrelevant. I’m still trying to reliably replicate this problem.
In reply to: Nothing appearing under "My Blogs"I just recreated this problem by accident!!!!!!!!!
1. Logged out of the site
2. Registered myself as a new user
3. Activated the account
4. Logged in as the new user. Blog listings disappeared
WTH?!?!?!? This is a SERIOUS bug! I’m going to try to replicate again using a fresh install and if I can replicate it again… I’m submitting to trac. This is brutal!!!! My client needs to go live on Monday and unless I can find a fix for this… we’ll have to redo the entire database again. And the client just finished creating all his content.
In reply to: changing admin name block accessUmmm… you can just do this in Site Admin > Options… at the bottom of the page. Space separated list of usernames.
In reply to: Nothing appearing under "My Blogs"I agree. Seems like a serious issue and there are at least three of us that have experienced the exact same thing.
In reply to: Nothing appearing under "My Blogs"@Michael: If you create a new database with a new name (don’t delete the old one) and then rename your wp-config.php file to wp-config-old-database.php and visit your site… WPMU will bring up the install screen again in order to create a new wp-config file that you can point to your fresh database. To go back to the old database… just swap your config files back (rename wp-config to wp-config-new-database and rename wp-config-old-database to wp-config). Point being… I wouldn’t mess with the database either. Not without a backup. So keep the old one on the server and for good measure… export a local a backup as well. And make local backups of those wp-config files too while you’re at it. Make a fresh database and then start importing just your content tables from the old to the new. I’m not sure if/when I’ll have a chance to debug this myself.
In reply to: Nothing appearing under "My Blogs"It has nothing to do with the install type after all… but I’m afraid I don’t know what causes it. As I say, all I did was start over with a fresh database.
What version did you upgrade from Michael? I noticed this happened on another site I had that was running trunk versions of 1.2. I hate to say so… but perhaps things like this are just the price we pay for playing with pre-repease software. I’d be interested to know if anyone has experienced this problem after upgrading from 1.1.
I wonder what the best way is to debug this? Maybe make a fresh database and import the old tables one at a time till you at least know what table is screwing things up?
