    That reminds me… my guess is that people spend 99% of their time on this site in the forums and as a result (since we rarely view profiles)… we don’t know where we’re all from. I was talking to Andrea_r last week by private message and it was only then that I realized that she’s also an Atlantic Canadian… living in just the next province over!!!!!!!! Ha! Which got me to thinking… location should be part of the forum avatar… right under name.

    I tweaked this for my needs. It now takes the ugly slugs and replaces hyphens with spaces and capitalizes the words. It also throws in a few titles for custom pages and my custom taxonomy.

    function bpdev_blog_title($complete_title,$title_old){
    global $bp,$current_blog,$wp_query,$post;
    if ( bp_is_blog_page() ) {//if this is blog page
    if ( is_single() ) {
    $title = __($post->post_title, 'buddypress' );
    } else if ( is_category() ) {
    $cat = ucwords( str_replace("-", " ", $wp_query->query_vars['category_name'] ) );
    $title = __( 'Topics | ' . $cat, 'buddypress' );
    } else if ( is_tag() ) {
    $tag = ucwords( str_replace("-", " ", $wp_query->query_vars['tag'] ) );
    $title = __( 'Tags | ' . $tag, 'buddypress' );
    } else if ( is_tax() ) {
    $tax = ucwords( str_replace("-", " ", $wp_query->query_vars['term'] ) );
    $title = __( 'Issues | ' . $tax, 'buddypress' );
    } else if ( is_home() ) {
    $title = __( 'Archives' );
    } else if ( is_page( 'issues' ) ) {
    $title = __( 'Issues' );
    } else if ( is_page( 'topics' ) ) {
    $title = __( 'Topics' );
    }

    if ( defined( 'BP_ENABLE_MULTIBLOG' ) ) {
    $blog_title = get_blog_option( $current_blog->blog_id, 'blogname' );
    } else {
    $blog_title = get_blog_option( BP_ROOT_BLOG, 'blogname' );
    }
    if(!empty($title)) return $blog_title . ' | ' . esc_attr( $title );
    }
    //so on blog home page, It will show Blog, reason we have excluded that page
    return $complete_title;
    }

    The two obvious things to check are:

    1. Apache has write permission to the blogs.dir folder (or you have suPHP enabled)

    2. You have the GD Library for PHP installed

    If you can upload other avatars… like your own… then neither of the above are the issue and we (or rather… DJPaul) would have to know what the error message is in your logs. But those are the two most obvious things to check on first.

    @Cyndy: Internet Explorer is just one big browser malfunction. LOL.

    @DJPaul: I don’t think it would be related to that ticket since I had not created any user blogs. I only had the main blog. It was the main blog that disappeared from my listings and menu.

    Hey DJPaul. Thanks for chiming in. Just FYI… in my case… I had been running 1.2-bleeding (clean install of 1.2 bleeding) and I’d been updating the plugin every few days. Sometime around Sunday/Monday my Blog listings disappeared from the admin menu, profile page and blogs directory. No idea what happened there. If I had found the problem… I would have submitted a bug. But I didn’t want to submit a bug for something I couldn’t replicate.

    Awesome. Thanks! One small tweak. This code just outputs the slug with an initial capital letter:

    ucwords( $wp_query->query_vars['category_name'] ), 'buddypress' )
    ucwords( $wp_query->query_vars['tag'], 'buddypress' )

    Would be nice to use a nice name instead (I’ll have to look in the DB or print out the variables to see if there’s some other variable I could use)… or use some PHP string command (if possible) to strip the dashes and capitalize all words.

    @ r-a-y: Well… it did… but only by brute force… by completely replacing the database. I imported the posts table so I didn’t lose any content. I didn’t dare import any other tables. Still wish I knew what happened but it was absolutely related to something in the database.

    Fresh database fixed it. Still don’t know how it got bonked.

    After 8 hours of testing I officially have no idea why all of my blogs are no longer listed in the blog directories or menus. Nothing even changed. It worked one day and it broke the next. I’ve reinstalled everything from scratch. Brand new WPMU. Brand new BP. No plugins. Default theme. Brand new wp-config and htaccess. Nothing fixes the problem. And I have no been able to recreate the issue with any number of different test installs. They all work fine. The only thing I have NOT done is install a new database. So it looks like I have no choice. I have to start over with a fresh database and try to migrate the content over. I really want to curse right now… but I won’t.

    @takeo

    Okay… it has something to do with using a subdirectory setup versus a subdomain setup. I’m on to something at least. LOL.

    I just mirrored my live site with my local development copy of the site. I reinstalled WPMU and BP on both. No plugins other than BP 1.2. The “My Blogs” submenu is populated on the local site but not on the live. So it has to be something wonky in the settings or database. Ergh.

    Thanks r-a-y.

    No there is nothing custom in either installation. No custom BuddyBar. No plugins. No child theme. Default theme. Release versions. On one site, the drop down is populated. On the other, it is not. I’m a WPMU/WP admin on both sites. It’s kind of driving me crazy. I’m about to try moving the site over to a fresh database to see if that solves it. Just as a test.

    Odd thing is it was working up until yesterday. And the only thing I can think of that I changed was that this morning I made the client a WPMU admin using the space separated list in Site Admin > Options. That and updating to 1.2 final. But I have other BP 1.2 final sites that are working fine.

    @takeo

    It’s beyond me. It has nothing to do with the theme though. The HTML source shows the following:

    <li id="bp-adminbar-blogs-menu"><a href="http://mysite.com/members/admin/blogs/my-blogs">My Blogs</a><ul></ul></li>

    So there’s nothing under the “My Blogs” drop down menu. Just an empty ul. This is with no plugins and the final versions of WPMU2.9.1.1 (sub domain install option) and BP 1.2. But I have another site running the same versions and it’s fine. The only difference is the database (obviously) and that other install is a “blogs in a sub directory” install. One works. One doesn’t.

    So it has to be a database or configuration thing. But I can’t for the life of me think of what changed. Unless the client changed something. I even put the two dashboards up side-by-side for the two sites and went through every config screen to set them all to the same settings. One works. One doesn’t. Argh.

    @Cyndy: The two posts above you give alternatives to using captcha. It’s not the “only known solution”. SPAMers use bots. Bots look for known text and urls… like “Powered by BuddyPress” or http://www.mysite.com/register or whatever. Changing those things can help a lot. And invisible defender helps too. All without captcha. Which I think everyone will agree… sucks.

    I see that it’s normal actually for the main blog not to be listed in directory or profile listings. So ignore that. But it’s very odd that it no longer shows up in the “My Blogs” menu in the floating admin bar at the to top of the screen. This is with no plugins and the final release of 1.2 and the default theme. Weird. Must be some odd database thing? In fact… I just updated another site to 2.9.1.1 and 1.2 final with no other plugins and it’s menu works. I’m at a loss here. I’ve compared all the settings in the backend between the site that works and the one that doesn’t and they are the same.

    Yup. Eyeball deep here.

    Would it be easier to change “Blog” to something else? The above function works but only on single post pages. You still see “Blog” showing up in the titles on archives (tag pages, category pages, etc.). I need to either change it or remove it site-wide… not just on single post pages.

    @Bowe and any other Mac users… check out CSSEdit by MacRabbit. It’s insane. I couldn’t live without it.

    Also… how do you find the online screenshot method of testing? I’d think that would be a pain? I have always tested with the actual browsers locally on my Mac (using Parallels for IE 6/7/8). The site would have to be online of course to use something like browserlab. I’m not dismissing it… I’m just curious.

    HTML: BBEdit

    CCS Dev/Debug: CSSEdit

    DB: Sequel Pro

    I’ve looked at TextMate and Espresso… but I keep coming back to good old BBEdit. And I could not do my job without CSSEdit. That program is insanely great. For CSS at least… it’s far better and more useful than Firebug.

    @nig3d I have no idea if this will help but did you try clearing your cookies for the site?

    @Andrea_r That is brilliant and yet so simple (editing the host file). Why didn’t I think of that!?!

    @etiviti: You can say that again! Not only was I losing my mind… but I think I drove a few other people in that thread crazy too :o)

    Although I have no answer on how to implement this (I’m not a programmer) a similar option to tags would be to use a custom taxonomy. It’s a new feature that was added in 2.8. That way your group taxonomy is not mixed in with normal tags. Only caveat might be that the documentation for taxonomies isn’t great right now.
