Attachments for Activity Items (f.i. Photos, Videos, Events, Links)

    I’m not sure if this is allready possible or not, but at least i haven’t heard about it yet.

    Since the Activity Stream becomes more and more the central place where the action takes place, i was thinking about the ability to get attachments for each new Activity Item.

    If plugin developers would be able to hook into the “Whats up John Doe” Box and add there user interface for “uploading Pictures” or “adding a Link” (MrMaz Plugin) it would encourage more people to use this features. The User Interface could slide in under the “Whats up John Doe” Box once u cklick one of the options beside “Attach:”.

    I did a little mockup to clarify my idea:

    +1.

    Brajesh has his BP Gallery plugin.

    MrMaz has his BP Links plugin.

    There are already some actions in the What’s New post form, but It would be nice if there was an uniform API so these plugins could hook into!

    I am working on this right now.

    +1 – I would linke those things very much! Everything should be kind of implemented in the normal activity-stream!

    Ps: Thanks MrMaz for your efforts!

    I can report that the released-last-nite bp-gallery rc1 has made massive strides and is in need of only a few mods to be totally worth, imho, of release. Still a lot of styling tweaks but that’s on me, not Brajesh so much.

    Now we have MrMaz (Marshall) handling externally hosted media/content and Brajesh taking care of locally stored user content. We are all set.

    RC1 is here -> http://buddydev.com/forums/topic/download-bp-gallery-rc1-here

    +1000 for adding the ability to do what is in the 21cdb’s Mockup above.

    +1. This feature is used very frequently on facebook so I can see it being popular on any social networking site.

    And this wouldn’t encroach on any Facebook intellectual property? I only ask because I’d like to see it be a sustainable plugin if developed.

    That Facebook patent thing makes me want to start punching throats.

    The facebook patent will never hold up. It’s more to protect their exact sequence of events in a news feed. It has nothing to do with posting something on a web site.

    Apple has a patent for touchscreen technology and so do others. Apples / oranges

    I wouldn’t be too worried about this. Any software (inc. wordpress) is filled with functionality that has been patented before one way or another (and the facebook news feed patent includes many elements that have been patented by other companies before). Most of these patents have so much prior art that they would never hold up in court. If wordpress core and plugin devs had to check for existing patents for every single function they added wordpress development simply woudn’t be possible and grind to a halt.

    A second issue is that software patents aren’t valid outside of the US, so if you’re really paranoid about this kind of thing you can always host your site in Europe.

    I don’t agree with the patent, but I would rather Facebook own it than a patent troll company that makes a living patenting technology for the sole purpose of suing established business that rely on the technology. Facebook has a reputation to uphold, unlike patent trolls who don’t care about their rep. Facebook patents all of their technology, no matter how dumb it may seem, to protect themselves from patent trolls. Amazon did the same thing with one-click.

    IANAL, but from what I read it seems that the key to the patent is the “algorithm”, otherwise it might look too much like RSS to be patentable, so if your feed is simply reverse chronological order then everything is probably cool. Will be interesting to see how this plays out though. A patent is just a piece of paper until a judge is reading it.

    I would not say that its Facebook patent because most social sites use it.. why not BP!

    @21cdb
    I like the mockup & true users shall use it more… maybe a special plugin that a user can add any plugin hookup to the activity !

    It would be really cool if the features ’21cdb’s’ suggested will be implemented. Is this still the plan and if so, is there a change this will be in the 0.4 version?

    @xspringe

    @MrMaz How is the plugin coming along? If there’s any more developers interested in this plugin maybe they can join development.

    @mrmaz

    I am going to try to get a 0.4 beta out this week with that functionality.

    Wow, thats sounds great! Does it work for Links only, or will it also be possible to upload pictures? I’m a bit confused about it, but anyway good to here that you find a way to extend the functionality of the activity stream post box!

    Do you have any plans to include Events to your plugin?

    …And yet another vote :-) +1 Looking for this as well along with adding tags to Activity Stream someday. Thanks for your efforts.
