I had an idea of another way to combat the constant comment spam and registrations from bots, though I don\’t know if it would work.

As the bots don\’t read the page like humans do, they just search for and find the forums to fill in, brings up an interesting idea.

What about using \’hidden\’ fields that are not displayed on the screen itself.

The idea being that if data is input into the field it could not possibly be a human, so we then know to \’not activate\’ or error out the comment/registration etc…

The ‘auto spam bot programs’ that I have come across all look for specific fields etc. We could do something like name the hidden field ‘password’ etc, so the bot thinks it’s legit, but it’s not.

Does anyone know if the bots are \’smart enough\’ to figure this out and get around it?

    btw.. not related

why does my username in the forums say i am ‘inactive’ where others say member, moderator, etc…? I am obviously logged in…. how do I become ‘active’? lol

In the meantime, is there a way to clear and recreate the cache so I can make the needed changes?

I get what you’re saying, but this type of “abuse” is unavoidable.

As there is HUGE potential for abuse in this, I would love to see the ability to remove something from the activity stream as an admin. Like a ‘delete’ or ‘warn’ or ‘mark as spam’ button for the admins next to each of the streams.

Yes, I mean the site wide activity, and also the members wire who made the post that was removed.

Well, as it is cached, how do I clear the cache and regenerate it?

I can see some real capability for some serious abuse of websites with a system like this.

Maybe a button in the buddypress admin to clear/regen the cache is a good idea?

I did the svn up and all seemed to work well as the site is still working.

I read in another thread that rc2 makes some db changes.

Is there something I should be doing other than just updating my svn or does the db automatically upgrade?

    thanks Rayni:

On the rss idea, I do not see a button anywhere on this page to sign up for rss for this particular thread. Is there a trick to that?

    As to activity streams:

Well as I don’t ‘blog’ or anything on this site that can ‘sort of’ work for now. I’d hate to have to go that route on my own buddypress setup though, as I may post 20-50 blogs posts a day, and respond to a few hundred other posts. The forum posts would simply get lost in the mix.

Are simple functions like subscribe and add to favorites not available in bbpress?

I’ve got a ‘weird’ idea that may apply, though it will probably be very specific to my business model.

For me, one thing I was thinking about was having members perform certain tasks such as 50 blog posts, 100 replies to threads, 20 blog posts that are rated ‘thumbs up’ by at least 20 other members, prior to being able to have a ‘custom theme’ in wordpress.

On the reverse side we could have a warning system, where if a person’s articles are marked ‘thumbs down’ by say 50 diff users that they are then warned about loosing custom themes etc…. encourages members to write ‘good’ posts in their blogs.

Another idea is how many of their posts are ‘featured’ on the main blog where they could then receive other yet to be determined bonuses such as plugins. I don’t know that there is a way of letting the server admin actually choose posts from the blog network to ‘post’ to the ‘main home’ blog. I don’t want to use the site aggrigator, as there will be many blogs and posts such as family pics etc that have no business being ‘featured’ on my main blog.

finally, as I want to encourage my members to blog ‘quality’ stuff as often as possible, some type of achievement system for posting ‘x’ number of posts per week/month would lead to an award such as using a real domain name etc.

I know that the premium site has the ability to charge people to add features, and I do have the plugin for that, though untested so far. I was just thinking of adding an additional way for people that can’t afford to spend money to get their blogs ‘prettied up’ per say.

I’ve really been racking my brain silly for the past few months, trying to figure out how to properly encourage quality submissions on the blogs and to encourage frequent updates. I think your ‘achievements’ system is a great step toward that idea.

Like everyone else here, the last thing I want is a bunch of blogs on my network that are neither maintained or have ‘garbage’ content that has nothing to do with my sites primary focus. I really am trying to get people to blog in specific categories that mean something to the site and the search engines.

    hope these ideas are pertinent

    additionally….

How in the world do I get to the page that shows all the theads I have participated in?

I tried typing my username into the search box, but that did not return the threads.

I am talking about wpmu and buddypress.

Sorry if I made it confusing by mentioning vb, as I was only using it as an example of what I was trying to explain.

It’s that exact .jpg above as to why I even got interested in buddypress in the first place. It looked very similar to another program I use, only cleaner.

Needless to say I was more than a little dismayed to find out it is not included in buddypress. I sure wish I knew what happened to that file as I would have loved to use it for my ‘basic’ members. I could then provide ‘real’ themes for premium members.

Another nice aspect to that layout is it’s hard to mess up or not understand for a newbie wordpress user.

Add me to the list of those that really wish it would be released, especially since that theme is now depreciated compared to the new theme on this site.

I just had the ‘bleeding edge’ upgrade completed a few hours ago. Prior to that I am unsure what vs. I was using.

    As to admin rights:

Is it possible to have a usergroup that can ‘moderate’ the posts on any forum but do nothing else like touch the plugins, themes etc?

I’d like to have 2 groups,

    admins that can erase posts

mods that can ‘suspend’ posts or unpublish them, and have a message sent to the site admin that the content was inappropriate etc… Kind of how like vbulletin does things. We have warning systems, mods, admins, super-admins, etc… I am able to create custom groups with custom permissions etc, to allow them to do only things I want. This has saved my butt more times than I care to talk about.

    As to deleting the user:

For the most part I wouldn’t want to be that drastic.

I have many people that come to the forums, and post stuff that I don’t agree with, or don’t really believe belongs on my site. They are usually well meaning people, but have much lower standards than I try to keep up with on my site. These people I usually just make part of a separate group, with very few permissions, like only able to post in certain forums, no pm system etc….

Usually I can ‘work’ with them, to let them know what I found offensive, and many times the problem does not come up again. If I had simply banned them, then very few people would survive on my site.

There are the people that just come in to spam our site from time to time. Those people I have no problem simply deleting.

I hope what I am trying to express makes sense.

I have been using calendar on my regular wordpress site for some time now and I love it.

It seems to be a great candidate for buddypress if the author allows it.

I love how easy it is to customize just about everything in the calendar from the way it looks to how events appear etc.. very simple

There really isn’t a maximum upload size as that is controlled within the servers php.ini file.

Basically you just need to adjust the maximum upload size and execution time for uploads

By far my number one plugin would be extending the multi-db to work with buddypress adding in replication as stated earlier. I believe Nicola may be working on this already though.

This would be a fantastic feature!

In my own example, I contacted a number of writers in my ‘field’ to see if they would be interested in ‘syndicating’ their blog content on my site. Almost everyone said yes…. that was until they found out it was required to manually input all of their articles.

For those that complained, I went ahead and did the job myself. It took days, but for my personal reasons the content was worth it.

Having the ability to go to another blog author, and have them ‘import’ their blog into my system would be huge. It benefits them because I have some pretty good traffic and I allow their ‘book’ adds etc on their own sites. It benefits me, because my readers get content that is focused to my topic from leading experts.

I cancelled my membership there yesterday for the exact same reason. I had no need for any of the other plugins as of yet, and paying $50 a month while I wait for a plugin that may not even start to be developed for months seemed an absolute waste of money.

    Looking good Nicola.

I love your plugins and the support you provide, it’s very much appreciated.

    btw

Maybe an error with the forum software here?

This post said it has 3 replies prior to me entering this one, however there are none.

    Great job Nicola!

I was able to hook up to the svn properly and have all the plugins functioning on my website. It is going to be nice to just use the svn for now until everything is stable.

These are really going to be some great plugins, and I look forward to future development as well. As always, you never cease to amaze me.

    thank you!

Can I ask what the 10, and 3 refer to in the very last line of code?

I am just now learning how to understand code that I am reading, and I think I grasp everything but that part.

Here is the file from my error logs.

[Thu Jan 29 22:11:54 2009] [error] [client 24.19.248.43] mod_security: Access denied with code 403. Pattern match “\\.php\\?(([a-zA-Z0-9\\-\\_\\.\\[\\]]*)=(http|https|ftp))” at REQUEST_URI [id “6600001”][rev “1”] [msg “Hsphere Rules 1: experimental rule for most php application attacks. Report false positives”] [severity “CRITICAL”] [hostname “support.mysite.net”] [uri “/wp-login.php?redirect_to=http%3A%2F%2Fsupport.mysite.net%2F”] [unique_id “SYJv@sz1K2IAAEkMDOo”]

Obviously mod_security is stopping this believing it’s an attack.

One thing I do not want to do is turn off mod_security, as when I look through just today’s logs there are thousands of actual attack attempts. I had no idea I was such a target already…

Is there a way to add exception rules to mod_security?

Or is there a better way to do this so I can use wordpressmu with buddypress?

I just updated the svn on my site, does that mean I have the most recent vs?

I was wondering because I still have the ‘news’ button in the navigation and I notice that the ‘new’ bp changed that to blog.

The ‘news’ button on my site stopped working after update from the svn.

    Trent:

I was using phpmotion for almost a year and still have it running on my site awaiting it’s upgrade. You may want to check out social media from mediascripts. It is much more stable than phpmotion and already has all the features of the ‘vaporware’ vs. of phpmotion that we’ve been waiting on.

I’m curious if you fully integrated phpmotion login system etc into wordpressmu already, and if so how it went.

I spent almost a month ‘tweaking’ social media to get it ready for wordpressmu, then Nicola came along and decided he’s going to build a native system. So I guess I’m in limbo for a few months when it comes to video.

Sorry for the ‘hijacked’ post… I’m done LOL
