We have just released BuddyPress 2.2.2.1 which includes the fix for this problem. Please upgrade, and we’re very sorry for the inconvenience that the initial 2.2.2 release caused. 🙂

Probably not really unless you (or a developer) builds something custom, but one of the things we will do soon – either in the next release (2.3) or the one after (2.4), we’re seriously looking at overhauling how we handle images. We’ll keep this use case in mind (having them stored in the media gallery).

I’m not really sure creating two threads about problems with other plugins breaking was really necessary. One was sufficient.

Yes, but I don’t think we know when that might happen yet (probably several months away as an indication, no promises).
