In reply to: Which File and How to Sort?
Looks like someone has forked or remade / resurrected this. From the support threads for the activity stream types block thing on wp repo; lenasterg.wordpress dot com/2014/11/14/bp_block_activity_types/
Says code is posted on github instead of wp repo – can anyone confirm this code is good / safe to use?
Why does buddypress dot org forums throttle and block me from posting half the time? meh. I have to cut up links, remove words. Another why we can’t have nice things, thing, I guess.
In reply to: Which File and How to Sort?A different method to get similar results:
I use BuddyPress Block Activity Stream Types ( https://wordpress.org/plugins/buddypress-block-activity-stream-types/ )and I have these set to be axed from activity stream:
deleted_group_document, new_blog, new_member, joined_group, friendship_created, activity_likedalthough it is in desperate need of an update / fork to make it work smoother with bp 1.9 plus I think. I just looked into plugin settings to get info for you, and I see a weird message on the settings page:
Warning: Missing argument 2 for wpdb::prepare(), called in /wp-content/plugins/buddypress-block-activity-stream-types/admin/bp-activity-block-admin.php on line 6 and defined in /wp-includes/wp-db.php on line 1154Hmmm.. it still works to block the annoying stuff my users have no interest in. Wonder what it will take to get this plugin forked and updated.
In reply to: How to "Like" ?@disha76
I would not use jetpack and try https://wordpress.org/plugins/buddypress-like/ instead. That may do what you are looking for, and it may not.. just a thought.
@ch1n3s3b0y – there are options to create your own profile fields, so you could add a new profile field with a radio button eg – choose customer or expert.
There are also different membership plugins and stuff that might enhance that a bit more – plugins like s2member.. maybe even something like press permit…
as far as having a different profile page for each – I think that is going to take some fancy custom coding.. some if then statements and such.. you will likely have to post on a job board to get someone with some skills on that.. it may be tempting to custom code a theme like this – but ultimately I think it would be better to custom code a couple of plugins and drop those into a sidebar or something – eg – “if bp_profile-field-2=customer” then display these fields / this code…
IF you custom mod up a theme and things change in the future where you theme has issues with new buddypress, or you want something different for another reason – then it will be more custom coding to bring over your custom profiles stuff..
just some random thoughts from a BP user – I am not an expert on any of this.
In reply to: Comments appear two times on activity stream@dreamsoft – I have no idea either… if you are a coding guru perhaps looking at the changelog for buddypress 1.9 to see what made things different. My theme guys never explained what the exact issue / fix was…
If you are not a coding whiz, then I would switch to a new theme and try to mod that to have the same colors and feel of the one you are currently using. Or pay someone to find / fix the issue…
In reply to: User type (18+ and 18-) help@giftvincy
I am sure there are many different “membership plugin” options out there..I’d suggest starting with the “press permit core” plugin
( https://wordpress.org/plugins/press-permit-core/ )
which should do what you are describing I believe. In reply to: Can I do this with BuddyPress?Without knowing everything exactly the way you envision, from reading:
4 different categories where different Contributors can write new posts and interact with the Participants in the forum (better way to comment and reply to questions using the forum, than WordPress’s commenting system). These Contributors, however, must have their own public profile and allow for Participants to subscribe to their posts. So far, I’ve used different plugins:
I think if you drop buddypress… do a WP MultiSite install – with 4 sub blogs… look into creating “author pages” – not all themes do that well out of the box… a simple subscribe to blog plugin for each of the 4 blogs.. I think you can install bbpress and mix it with each sub blog – but I have not messed with bbpress in a while, so not sure the best way to connect that.. I think you can enable to the bbpress “sitewide” then each individual sub blog author and enable it or something.. then code that into the sidebar if each blog.. that would do everything you have said I think.. maybe that will get you in the direction you are trying to go.
I suggest searching the wp plugin repo for plugins that are “multi site” enhancements.. look into “author pages” in the codex, and search for themes that have special author pages to make experimenting easier..
In reply to: Comments appear two times on activity stream@dreamsoft – I had the same problem some months ago – it was indeed a theme issue.
Of course it was blamed on a buddypress update that changed some things.. but a theme update was the fix – and the theme was a”recent” theme, one that had been updated recently, was a premium theme, and the professional devs advertised it as being 100% compatible with wp 4 and BP 1.9 – which come to find out, it was not. They rolled out a fix a few days later. In reply to: Reliable hosting for BuddyPress installations?@sbraiden – I had similar 24 second page load times, and tried to get advice for enqueing, dergistering, and compacting the multiple and overlapping java and css all these plugins attached to buddypress are mixing in on top of the themes stuff.
Y Slow gives my BP site with basic plugins an “F” – WP professionals shrug it off – meh.
(more one all that here: http://premium.wpmudev.org/forums/topic/deregister-enque-compact-css-and-java-jquery-buddypress-load-time )
I have a sneaky suspicion however that my load times were an issue for me when logged in, and perhaps being logged in as an admin, I THINK that the (stupid) wpmudev dashboard plugin was slowing down my page load speed dramatically more than anything else. It was strange that after I complained of my long page loads, that 2 days later wpmudev had an update for their dashboard thing, and then my page load time went to like 3 seconds. – Coincidence, maybe, nothing definitive. – Everyone else said the pages loaded fine – so maybe it was just an admin thing – or maybe my ghostery blocking gravatar loads or something.
ANYHOW – in regards to hosting, I have a small buddypress site running fine on a shared server with amerinoc. I have one that is fairly busy running fine on a dedicated server at certified hosting.
I personally think that most important thing for a WP based site to perform well is blocking all the bad bots.
I have found that blocking all the naver and badu spiders (And most others) with a robots/txt file has decreased the sql over load (at peak times) on my servers by more than 80%.
I found that hosting a few wp sites on a shared server or dedicated could cause problems not just with spiders crawling pages too much too fast for indexing, but also all the attempting account creations / account brute force logins – even if they are blocked with something like sucuri or limit login attempts – every time they tried to login – they were using up server resources to load the login page, then hit the database to check credentials.
I also suggest using a pwd auth like explained here: http://support.hostgator.com/articles/specialized-help/technical/wordpress/wordpress-login-brute-force-attack
locking down the login with a double thing like that is fine for most WP installs, and a private family / friends BP site should be fine – when the bots can’t login through the first thing there is no need for wordpress to load a bunch of php / css files and pull from SQL a bunch of times just to give a bot a failed login – It becomes a problem for general open to the public buddypress comms I guess.
Now I set all my non-BP sites to use the double auth, I block all search engine bots aside from the top three selectively with robots.txt – and now just about any server can run fine with wp / bp – especially if some attention is paid to plugin overhead, wp-cacheing tools.
I have my fingers crossed the new bp-mediapress (sp? and Beta!) plugin thing will decrease the plugin overhead of rtmedia and offer a better alternative for pics and stuff.
Same random thoughts – I’m not an expert so take my 2 cents with a grain of salt or two..
In reply to: New here – can users add images to their posts?Have you tried or are you using the rtmedia plugin?
or checked out the new beta http://wptavern.com/mediapress-now-in-beta-a-new-media-gallery-plugin-for-buddypress
I THINK both of these add that functionality?
On one of my bp sites with rtmedia enabled I have an “attach files” button under activity box when logged in.. I THINK that allows uploaded a pic to the activity stream(?) not sure if this is enabled by the rtmedia plugin or something else. I could check further.
In reply to: Men Woman Couple@mariovisie – you say after you choose the radio button for man, when you login you always see the other fields… you mean when viewing a profile you see all the filed option? OR you mean if you click “edit profile” you see all field option?
I have not seen all fields show when viewing profiles that are already created, so I am confused if you are seeing this in this way.
as far as “Only an administrator must have the option to change this.” – I don’t know about setting permissions for that, another bp expert may be able to chime in on that – or maybe the “press permit core” plugin can lock that down somehow. Not sure on that one.
In reply to: Men Woman Coupleunder “users” -> “profile fields”
add new field.
I choose “field type” radio buttons – you might use checkboxes or something.
put “guy” in the field option under radio buttons.
then click “add another option” text under that.
put “girl”
click add another option
“couple”In reply to: Change Login & Register Links in Admin BarI use the plugin “custom admin bar” to do this ( https://wordpress.org/plugins/custom-admin-bar/ ) (with a wp/bp site)
There are a ton of admin bar plugins in the wp plugin repo – certainly a few of them can handle this without getting into code?
In reply to: Block other Users – count images@emidio007 – are you really using the old never updated bp-album still? I had to switch to rtmedia album since it seemed that no one was working on any other album plugin or making this (what I consider extremely important) functionality a part of BP core.
on the block user thing I had brought up similar issues here:
https://buddypress.org/support/topic/report-user-report-abuse-flag-something/but no one could tell me if anything was actually working properly with current versions of stuff. Glad to see @shanebp posting above, sounds like there is hope that something with this function is current and working.
In reply to: Spam/Bot usersBest thing I did to limit spam bot users is adding the free wordpress plugin “good question” – but change the defaults questions and answers.
I also reccomend si captcha plugin, and limit login attempts.
I always change the default settings on limit login attempts to be more strict than default.
I also add whitelist ip plugin for limit login attempts so I don’t lock myself out – lol.
forgot to put the @shibl in the above reply – so maybe the reply I posted above will get to you now 😉
This plugin is supposed to do that – https://wordpress.org/plugins/bp-blog-author-link/
( I think.. if I understand what you are asking about)I used it for a while (a long time ago ) and it worked! … then some wp /bp stuff updated and it stopped working..
I stopped using it..
I think the plugin has been updated since I last tried it.. so it might work now..Give it a try and if it works or not let me know and I might give it another go…
In reply to: Registration page and membership level (PMPro)@mika909 – I do not think anyone at the buddypress forums is going to help you with this. When trying to get a particular plugin to work with BP it is best to read the instructions with that plugin ( wordpress . org/plugins/paid-memberships-pro/faq/ )
or ask in the support forums for said plugin ( https://wordpress.org/support/plugin/paid-memberships-pro )
Although the FAQ for this plugin links to the premium plugin site – which basically says figure it out on your own.. or register there free to get access to extra documentation, or pay $297 to get extra help and up to one hour of consultation / help in setting this plugin up.
This is really not a buddypress how to / troubleshooting thing. If there is a way to mark this thread as resolved you should do that.
In reply to: Customization of Registration FormI use a similar thing.. plugin is called “good question” (I think) – it does not have radio buttons last I checked.. but can do multiple questions and answers I think.
https://wordpress.org/plugins/good-question/In reply to: impossible to load a profile picture from Ipad@totoff which theme are you using?
Using any kind of plugins that affect pics? (like bp-album / bp-media / etc)
Sounds possible… probably have to hire on some custom coding help though. I am not aware of anything out of the box or plugin wise that will do searching by distance with zip codes.
The other stuff you mentioned can probably be pieced together with plugins from various places – may need some tweaks to get things to work as you describe – which will take some extra coding mercenary expenses I think.
I am not an expert on all the various plugins, and couldn’t begin to tell you how much coding help would be needed. You can create a buddypress site pretty cheap to play with it and then see how many modifications you would need to get what you are going after.
In reply to: S2member and BuddypressMight want to consider axing the s2 member if you are never going to charge and look at press permit for the restrictions. ( http://presspermit.com/press-permit-overview/ (also in the wordpress plugin repo)
I have played with both s2member and press permit on a couple of sites. I found that s2member is not needed for my free site.
In reply to: Updated 4.0.1. and buddypress not working.@yanner11 – did you disable all plugins and switch themes and see if buddypress works?
Not sure all the plugins you are using.. but sometimes disabling them all, then re-enabling them after enabling buddypress will fix things… but if you do not know if it is a plugin or theme thing – you are kind of flying blind.I would do the disable as outlined above and see if it works without the theme, or maybe you will find that enabling plugins one by one there is a particular plugin that is causing the issue.
With some plugins in my experience after an update there may be the need to go to your permalinks settings, change permalinks to a different setup, save. Then change permalinks back to your original setup and save again.
In most if you run through these steps your issue will be resolved.
In reply to: Updated 4.0.1. and buddypress not working.deactivate all your plugins, switch to twenty twelve theme. reactivate buddypress pluing. Check if your groups work.
If so – then reactivate plugins one by one and see if it still works.
If it works with all your plugins and twenty twelve theme then it is your custom community theme.
Hope that helps…
In reply to: report user report abuse flag something? Thanks for the info about these block user plugin options! I have my fingers crossed that the one in the wordpress.org repository will work as advertised.. but it says it is plugin v1.beta – and says compatible up to 3.6 (or something like that)
Have you have a chance to test these to see if they work as intended? Any idea if installing and running them for a little bit and then decided to deactivate leaves behind problems with the database or anything?
