@griswolddad – disable all plugins except buddypress. Then go look around your site and see if you can find the ability to upload avatar. I find this fastest by hovering over the top right admin bar (when logged in already) (howdy admin_ – click edit profile.. then “change profile picture” is in the profile area..
If that works, then you know it is one of your plugins that you disabled causing a problem… so reactive them one by one until you find the problem pops up again..
if that doesn’t work – then it’s likely a theme issue..
@jerryroxas – welcome to the wonderful world of wp and bp!
Here is what you are likely to find out.. when asking for support in the bp forums people are going to ask if your problem exists when you switch to the default wp theme and turn off all plugins except bp.
If your problem does not exist in the default setup, then re-enable your other plugins one by one and see if the issue is caused when another plugin is activated. If the problem is caused by another plugin (in your case I am guessing the members plugin) – then you will likely be asked to go find the support forums for that plugin and ask them over there, as it’s not a bp problem, and you are unlikely to get (free) support here.
If your problem does not exist with all plugins, change your theme to what you were using and see if the problem exists. IF problem exists only with the non-default theme, then you need to ask for support with your theme designer.
If you come back here and say that you need such and such functionality and the other theme designers and plugin authors are not helping you, then you will likely be directed to the coders jobs board when you can offer cash for solutions. (And those solutions that you pay for will likely not be guaranteed to work, or work in the future when wp and bp have updates.)
I will add some extra light on your situation however, from what I have seen the next version of buddypress is supposed to have core functionality support for some kind of member levels thing.. see https://buddypress.org/2015/01/buddypress-2-2-beta-2/ –
whether or not that new function will work right at all, or work for the type of situation in which you are trying to create with the permissions / members plugin you are currently playing with, I don’t know. I myself have had some luck with using press-premit-core for some content restriction situations, but I have not looked to see if those affect activity stream registering.. I may play with that some and see.
In reply to: no access to /settings/Is this with one of the default wp themes like twenty-fifteen / twenty-fourteen?
you have tried deactivating all plugins except buddypress to see if the problem is related to a plugin?
if yes and yes, I would go to permanlinks, note what they are set to, change permanlinks to a different setting and save.. then try your settings tab.. then go back and change your permanlinks back to how you want them.. and save..
In reply to: Activity/sign up pagego to dashboard -> Settings -> Reading.. change home page to be activity.. and make your blog posts a new page called “whatever” you have to make a new page called “whatever or site blog” or something first.
Should be able to make a div block that includes some welcome message info and a sign up form and plop that into the header of your theme.. have is conditional like “if_is_home”.. one of the themes I use on a site (bp-social) does something like this, but it uses “if_is_logged_out(notlogged_in)”, then display a content block that has some welcome info and a sign in / sign up for in it.. that block does not appear once someone is logged in..
I imagine there may be some plugins in the wp-repo that add a content block conditionally.. might be easy if your theme has header widget areas..
So yeah I think there are several ways to do this with buddypress, if I understand what you mean.
In reply to: Not receiving notification of new user registration?@thestylistquo – this sometimes depends on your server settings and your email client’s server settings. One server I run bp on will send wP emails using php that get through my own hosted email server and desktop email client just fine.. however with the default settings on my one server, emails sent by wordpress / buddypress will not make it through to most yahoo gmail email accounts… something about headers not registered or something.. I found a plugin that will force WP to “send mail through smtp” instead of php, which then gets emails through the various anti spm systems that some email hosting providers require…
I found a similar situation with contact form plugins… “fast Secure Contact Form” will not get emails through yahoo email addys (even with tweaking the smptp settings in the plugin) – with my server, however “Contact Form 7” gets emails through to yahoo accounts just fine… what the two different plugins do to modify sent from headers or whatever, I don’t really understand…
Then of course there are server ip blacklists and crap like sorbes that block things.. and even when they get through to my desktop client, sometimes outlook or kaspersky will flag them as spam and push them into my junk mail folder…
Not sure any of these issues are affecting you and your setup, but maybe that info will get you look in the right direction. I forget what gmail and yahoo call that header registering thing or whatever – they have info posted somewhere.
In reply to: recommended membership pluginsfab-pj – paypal getting emails to your users? Or s2 / your wp install not getting email to your users? – Different systems use different methods for sending emails with wp, and some email systems will reject emails under various circumstances. Just sending an email via php with general server stuff in headers may not get through some systems like yahoo or gmail. I had to use some weird “wordpress send emails via smtp” type of plugin on one site… I also found that “fast secure contact form” would not put the right header info in emails to get to yahoo addys.. but the plugin “contact form 7” did put header things together right with my server.. of course this varies on lots of things beyond wordpress (your server setup – where they are going, if your server ip is in any blacklists, etc)
I have had not trouble using s2 with users signing up via mobile devices.
You ask about membership plugins that work with BP – not sure what your goal it.. I mean BP is a memberhsip thing.. if you are thinking about membership levels and content restrictions and such I would look at “press permit core” – in my experience I was able to axe using s2 and just use press permit. If you are looking for something fancy you may need to combine a couple / few plugins.. premium.wpmudev has a membership plugin and content restriction plugins as well.
random thoughts, now knowing exactly what you are going for and what you have tried.
In reply to: Simple Address directory@rlaine – you might be able to mashup what you need by using WP custom fields, or one of the plugins in the wp repo that deal with “custom fields”
there are several directory plugins out there, some hosted in the wp repo and some in premium walled gardens like premium.wpmudev I think. Since you have not listed the ones you looked at and did not like it would be impossible for others to suggest some that you might consider.
You say that you can do some front end styling stuff – so you may very well be able to add a bit of code to some theme pages to display custom fields (https://codex.wordpress.org/Custom_Fields ) from WP and get exactly what you are looking for without a directory plugin…
Of course being a front end guy ( I assume from what you are saying) you could also use one of the plugins you mention you have already tried and just use some css display none for the social stuff you say is too much.
random thoughts for ya…
In reply to: Private Messaging 'Page Not Found' issue@kateleedotinfo – not sure this is your issue or not, but it seems about every third update of rtMedia plugin I do causes most static pages to be 404 not found – and the fix is to (first make a note of what your permalinks settings are) – change permalinks settings, save.. then change permanlinks back to what you had and save again.
Just had this issue again on one of my sites..
In reply to: groups pagination not found – after server move@danbp — thanks for the heads up with that bp repair tool screen, after all these years I have never known about / seen that.
Ran the five available tools there,
Counting the number of friends for each user… Complete!
Counting the number of active members on the site… Complete!
Repopulating Blogs records… Complete!
Counting the number of groups for each user… Complete!
Determining last activity dates for each user… Complete!and still have the same problem with 211 groups showing via front end, yet only 9 have the needed data in database to display properly.
here is a mashup screen grabs of those database tables
http://tinyurl.com/pg9g4ma
(not 100% accurate – screens not captured at once unfortunately)no idea how this happened.. I assume my last host had some disk trouble or something and things got screwey.
In reply to: groups pagination not found – after server move@danbp Thanks for looking, I was going crazy wondering if I missed something!
Tried a few things. Ended up in wp-admin dashboard, clicked on groups, then next page, got “nothing found” – so my admin dashboard shows like 211 groups.. but only 9 or so are showing.
I went into phpmyadmin and find that in the wp_bp_groups table, only 9 groups have name, slug, and description.. all the other groups have an ID and creator ID – but everything else is blank, and the date created field are all zeros for those. Checked the other server and it looks the same in phpmyadmin – so looks like a database fail.
I’m going to hunt for old backups.. but in the event of just cutting losses…
Should I go through phpmyadmin and just delete all the table rows that appear as mostly blank?
Would I also need to edit anything in wp_bp_groups_groupmeta or wp_bp_groups_members ?anything in users files or others that are tied to groups that would need to be fixed?
since the wo-admin dashboard can not find the other groups (202 of 211) – I can’t delete the groups from there.. maybe it would be better to put some kind of info in the tables that is missing, get wp- to recognize the groups and then delete from the dashboard to be cleaner?
Wow.. sql database messed up and I don’t even know how (or when!)
In reply to: groups pagination not found – after server moveSo bp dot org hates words with s and E and x – I keep getting: “ERROR: Your reply cannot be created at this time.” When trying to post comments around here.. happened when I was trying to suggest couples and singles categories on someone else’s dating site thread.
and it may not be obvious how to put together the spaced out thing above.
maybe this tinyurl with work http://tinyurl.com/nay6lsdIn reply to: groups pagination not found – after server move@danbp – It’s an adults only thing, so if non-clothed imagery or alternative sensuality discussions and media could be offensive, then please don’t click over.. s ex c hat s pa ce DOT com/groups/
If you do check it out, I appreciate it. This bp install has been driving me nuts all week. I spent about 30 hours going back and forth with the other server co tech people trying to figure out what was blocking the ajax save for widgets and stuff.. found out that mod_sec was blocking some wp-admin things… and then found an article that said some server caching setups are blocking some wp/dp ajax save things (caching php) – moving to a different host, I am relieved all those problems seem to have gone away – most everything is working now..
In reply to: groups pagination not found – after server move@djpaul – I’m not sure if it was working on the previous server; I THINK something related to mod_sec settings on that server was causing problems for the site, so I had to move it. Weird things started happening… changing widgets order would not save properly (found a work around by entering accessibility mode in screen options) – also custom menu settings would not add pages to the custom menu – could not figure out why.. so moved to new server.. now widgets save and stuff.
@danbp – I do use a bp-custom to make a user’s profile default show their profile instead of activity tab. (Wish I knew how to get rid of the “BASE” showing there!) – but I don’t think anything else is doing any custom pagination loop stuff in bp-custom or theme functions or anything.
not seeing anything in server error log.
not sure how to check for css or js errors.. like using the w3c validator? or is this a java console debugger thing I have heard about?
Not sure what to put, my_bp_activities_per_page_5_on_groups_activity (would that be the proper first line of the code? (or where (bp-custom?) – to modify groups display. Trying to understand that page you referenced and the trac codes.
when I tried adding – it does show a new page of groups, but only displays 2 groups, yet under that is says “Viewing 8 – 14 of 211 groups ” – strange.
@juliantrueflynn
Might also look into – https://wordpress.org/plugins/unconfirmed/I have used that to resend activations, the plugin description says it can “deleting their pending registrations,” – but not sure if that means is removes them from the database or whatever.. I have not tried using it in that manner. This plugin might also limit the amount of users you can mess with to 20 or 40 at a time – so it may be too tedious to do what you need anyhow. Haven’t played with it a while, and not sure if it’s been updated to add new functions since I used.
Others finding this thread may benefit from that plugin, or not – just a thought.
In reply to: Members & Media IssuesThe theme details for that theme say:
rtMedia Ready – Add albums, photo, audio/video encoding, privacy, sharing, front-end uploads & more.I would bet that for the media tab functions of that to work, you would need to install the rtmedia plugin
( https://wordpress.org/plugins/buddypress-media/ )Of course I don’t win every bet – and don’t bet often – just a thought you might try..
If I was creating a new theme with buddypress in mind right now, I would consider that most buddypress installs probably use the rtmedia plugin – and given that it is over bloated with it’s own loading of bootstrap components, and font awesome, and I think some zurb foundation files(?) – most themes I have tried to use that are responsive and work with buddypress plain – have issues when the rtmedia plugin is enabled – not sure why exactly – but I found that any theme I tried that was based on bootstrap code caused conflicts, and there for I was unable to use – since having media uploads is more important than having a good theme imho.
Maybe that will change if the new mediapress plugin proves to be a good alternative – but I don’t think we will know unless someone codes an import media and stuff from rtmedia to mediapress.
So if I was making a new theme for BP – I would try to test with rtmedia, and some of the other major plugins that most people will be using. I’d make it responsive – but I would get a list of all classes that bootstrap uses and make sure not to use any of the same.
It would be nice to see a new theme that had options to un-enque / deregister calls to repetitive assets – on my current theme I think my theme calls 4 javascripts, 3 css files, adds inline css styles, and then my 6 plugins do the same.. so I end up loading javascripts about a dozen times, and fonts, and about a dozen css files, and a few hundred lines of inline css, and all kinds of extra bloated bs.
Some random thoughts from my recent experiences.
In reply to: Members & Media IssuesIf you change themes to 2014 or whatever and the same process works right, but fails when you use the sweet date theme – then that is not a buddypress issue and should be brought up with that theme’s developers.
When you say you have a media tab to click – is that something you have in buddypress without other plugins? IF your media tab is created by rtmedia or mediapress or some other media plugin – then I would ask those plugin devs.
In reply to: How to "Like" ?I am guessing it would easy to add a function to one of the like / voter plugins mentioned above ( https://buddypress.org/support/topic/how-to-like/#post-231535 ) – that would also write something to the BP activity table – which would then show likes or votes on posts and such on the activity stream – if those like / vote buttons also work on media that is uploaded through rTmedia (or the new (beta) mediapress plugin) then that would be pulled into the activity feed.
The tricky part beyond that is that buddypress does not have an integrated media thing – so there would need to be some kind of bridge between rtmedia, or mediapress or whatever was handling the media to display “likes” somewhere on the profiles.
Maybe this is something the rtcamp or mediapress plugin guy can add that functionality or someone can create some kind of bridge / api thing to let the three seperate pieces all talk to each other – then you would need code in your theme to grab that database table and display numbers next to whatever…
I think rtmedia’s plugin displays a number next to the media tab in my bp-social theme (for number of pics / videos someone has uploaded) – I wonder where this “# of likes” is to be displayed? Just a total number of likes in the main profile fields area – or number of likes broken down by media uploaded, blog posts liked, activity updates liked, etc.
I like you thoughts on this @disha76 – I’d like to see this work – it sucks that BP does not have integrated media handling – it’s a major issue I have posted about in the past – brings us to this “4 separate things need to talk to each other” in order to get basic functions working / displayed.
it would be awesome if the mediapress guy would offer to give that code to core BP – but then again, it appears there is not much work going into updating / maintaining BP these days – so getting things updated seems to depend more on third parties doing code for side projects money from what I can tell. Which of course means paying for custom stuff today – a future WP or BP update could cause the voting / like plugin to break and need to be recoded (by a dev that may not be responsive) and the media plugins could break.. and your theme may not display correctly – so you may have to try to pay all those people to make updates to keep those functions working in the future – if you can get those people to come back to projects.
So – I hope it happens, but like many things buddypress – I would not hold my breath that something that can be modded to work today will not break in the future without a fix – I’ve had to let a previous buddypress like system go, and a few other plugins from around 1.5 that were nice.
In reply to: .php & .css files not updating after changeshad that problem once – late realized a “cache” plugin was not updating – (w3-total cache I think) – which was auto-installed and activated by that particular web host’s installer.
Of course, check your own browser cache / clear your browser cache (try with different browser / computer perhaps).
You could also have an apache config or htaccess that is telling browsers to cache css for a week or a month or whatever.
Could be other issues too I guess.
In reply to: Urgent! looking for a membership plugin@rizar9
another thought – http://premium.wpmudev.org/project/appointments-plus/ – it’ll cost ya 19$ to play with it – and it might need custom modding to do exactly what you need (costing who knows much time or money, or it may work out of the box for what you need).. they also have a premium membership plugin.. I think their yearly membership is outrageously expensive for most people’s usage.. but their appointments plus plugin does say “Stay informed with integrated notifications system”I have not used that one yet – but it may be closer to what you are looking for (?)
In reply to: Urgent! looking for a membership plugin@rizar9 – buddypress is a membership plugin (and more) – but you may not need that kind of community (that buddypress essentially creates) – you could use a regular ol’ wordpress site and something like s2member if you are set on a membership plugin.
If you find a way to encrypt all the data that gets stored in the database, please let me know – I have been trying to find a good secure contact form system that encrypts into sql and stuff – which I think would be needed for the hippa stuff with some of my clients..
“without a membership plugin, how am I able to keep a record of the past and pending appointment bookings that the person made?” = I am not sure on that really – but I was pointing you to a couple of plugins up above that seem to do some of what you are describing – so maybe you should install those and play with them – see what they report to you and perhaps some small mercenary (paid) modifications of those could piece together what you are describing(?)
In reply to: Urgent! looking for a membership pluginrizar you don’t need a membership plugin for that- you needs a points for actions / karma type plugin and an appointment setting plugin. I have heard of one like that, I guess something similar to https://wordpress.org/plugins/mycred/ and these https://wordpress.org/plugins/search.php?q=buddypress+appointments&sort= . From my limited experience dealing with some in the medical field in the states, I am not sure what you are describing is technically ethical or legal – but I don’t know for sure, and I am sure those issues vary by region as well. Just a thought you might want to consider before putting too much into that.
In reply to: Men Woman CoupleI stumbled upon something today that may be what are you looking to achieve here..
Introducing Conditional Profile Fields for BuddyPress plugin
I know nothing about how it works, but when I saw it, I thought about you post here and think that is kind of what you were asking to do…
@ronia – I am having some luck with most of the issues you describe using the “gridilicous” pro theme – and rtmedia plugin… am eager to test out the beta mediapress plugin ( http://buddydev.com/buddypress/presenting-mediapress-media-plugin-will-ever-need-buddypress/ )to see if it works with this theme and others to have better enhancements compared to the standard rtmedia thing.
A few thoughts to add to your discoveries perhaps.
(Still have not found anything perfect myself, just piecing together the least bad things at the moment – lol )
I found that most buddypress responsive themes are based on bootstrap – and since rtmedia loads a lot of bootstrap, and font awesome stuff, things would break when I put them together.. so I have to sift through the few that were not bootstrap based in order to use rtmedia.. bp-social is okay – but not totally (only percentage) responsive… I’ve been kicking around some BP + Tempura Theme and Firmasite as well – but have not done enough testing and modding to say whether they are ready for live sites..
I got a book on making responsive themes, maybe I will finish it before end of summer and make one. Hopefully the media plugins will mature a bit by then as well.
In reply to: How to "Like" ?I found a few in the WP repo that may do what you are asking..
https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-ulike/
https://wordpress.org/plugins/voter-plugin/
wordpress.org/plugins/likebtn-like-button/I have not tried any of these, so I’d love to hear from you if you try any and they work for what you are wanting to achieve. I also have not looked to see if any of these have privacy issues (loading images / data from third party sites like jetpack)
They say they work with posts, pages and BP activity stuff, and show some shortcodes to add most liked this and that, I assume to places in your theme..
I hope one of those, or similar will do that trick for you. I may decide to play with that like thing again myself in the near future.
