In reply to: Strange change to page layout
Sounds like this is a theme issue and likely not an issue in regards to the 2014 / 2015 themes.. so you are probably going to have to contact your theme author about this.
You also did not provide any info about your setup – ( https://buddypress.org/support/topic/when-asking-for-support-2/ ) so there is no way anyone could guess about this.. have things changed with bp? quite a bit with some updates, and not so much with others –
you should disable all plugins aside from bp and see if the issue continues first imho.
if so – your theme author will likely have to dig into the issue.
In reply to: Issues with The7.2 Theme and BuddyPress@rocketslime – not sure if “The 7.2” theme is a premium theme you paid for or a free theme from somewhere?
From what I have seen in the bp forums, if it’s a premium theme – chances of you getting support here is less than 1%.. if it’s a free theme and it’s in the wp-repo – there is a slightly higher chance.. but most bp support is limited to the default 2014 / 2105 themes.
You should check this with your theme author to see if they can fix the problem.
In reply to: Buddypress “Logged In” Menu Items Not Manifesting@deklein – switch your theme to 2014 theme – does it come up then?
disable all your other plugins aside from bp… does it come up then?
if so – re-activate one by one and test if it’s still there.. you may find it’s a theme or other plugin causing a conflict (?)
@swissprice – There are several “chat” plugins what “work with wordpress / buddypress” – it would be easy to establish a group chat room that allows registered and non-registered users to chat with each other via the main chat room – and they can private message each other there.
As far as “begin chat with this user” – I think you would need something that says “User A” is online now – and a setting that would allow a non-registered, non-logged in person to send a “message”. I think I saw a thread a while back where someone was trying to adapt the “single user profile page” to allow guest comments, aka activity post on that profile / user’s activity page..
Not sure exactly what you are going for here.
In reply to: Buddy press won’t work with my theme@liharris – you can learn the basics of CSS fast and free at CodeAcademy dot com – php not as fast and easy from what I gather.. I’ve been doing the videos at udemy or maybe it’s udacity.. but I think a place like treehouse would be better.. not sure yet.
In reply to: Activity stream customisation options…@danbp – thanks for the info – I have been wondering what the deal is with that!
It would be cool if that link limit could have a bypass when the links are to bp dot org, wp dot org, hookr io –and add the favicon line to the support page, and the pagination for profiles->past replies -> page2 🙂
jk – I know the the bp people are doing tons of work on much more important things and I appreciate that.
Maybe I will repost the info I had and split it into two.. I’ve gotten in the habit of saving comments I make at any WP place in a separate notepad + window for those unkowns.
In reply to: Buddy press won’t work with my theme– it’s the (or one of the) “default” wp themes ( https://wordpress.org/themes/twentyfourteen/ )
about the only way you will get any kind of support with bp or / and rtmedia..it’s not the easiest thing to mod – but at least it works, and bp has some stylesheets included that massage it into something better than the average theme for some bp pages..
I finally got deep into it to style some changes at the various media queries / screen sizes..
btw – did you try changing your premium themes style.css to those changes to see if they work?
if you search the bp forums for other premium themes you will see that even ones selling as “the best or the most popular buddypress theme” – seem to have issues and lack good support.. search the forums for “kleo” for example – lol
I am sticking with twenty fourteen ’till things mature a bit (recent changes in wp and bp have made things complex in some ways) –
In reply to: Activity stream customisation options…Yep – I think most of us want better backend choices for what things are included and excluded in the activity stream – I wrote a detailed post reply recently on this thread here: https://buddypress.org/support/topic/content-activity-stream/
but I had too many links or wrong words in it or something and I guess it got stuck in the moderation que or just blackholed by akismet – who knows..
In reply to: Buddy press won’t work with my theme@liharris – welcome to the suck (that is theme issues with bp (and other things bp related like rtmedia) (welcome to the suck a movie quote, kind of joking)-
you will likely not get any help in the bp forums when it comes to premium themes, you should contact the theme author.
I did a quick look, and I must say I have zero knowledge of that theme and all the css things that could affect everything – I am also not a css expert.
My first thought is that you can create something very similar with a free theme from the wp-repo and a one of the “cards” plugins from the from wp-repo..
my second thought is wondering why the theme author did not include a couple of css rules like:
.header {
margin-left: -200px !important;
}body {
margin-left: 200px;
}but again I have no idea what he/she is trying to do with whatever elements, and how one may affect another in different situations..
you could try to make a child theme (good luck with that friggin process!)
and adapt those rules..
but I suggest that you don’t get married to that theme and buddypress – even if you find a theme that actually says “works with buddypress” – I think you will find little issues to contend with – and from what I have seen (lately even) is that these premium theme authors (And free theme authors) have trouble keeping up with bp and other things that are (IMHO) needed addons with bp (rtmedia, or/and media press, or that other one – umm. photo something)
anyhow – I gave up on all premium and free themes and have been stuck with working with 2014 theme as it’s the only thing that gets any kind of “working well with bp / rtmedia and other things” – I’m sure other smarter coders mileage is different.
In reply to: Content activity stream@xrossgg well fudge – I tried posting a thorough reply, but I guess my post is going to held in moderation for having too many links in it. Maybe one of the @mods will un-moderate it.
Search the forums here for “activity filter” – look for things with “parse_args” –
maybe the thread here can get you started: https://buddypress.org/support/topic/documentation-for-remove_action-activity-streams/
In reply to: Profile photo error with Kleo theme@hamiltontroy007 – Is the issue the same when you use chomre vs firefox vs IE ?
if you switch to the 2014 theme does the same issue occur?
If not, then it would appear to be something with the Kleo theme, and I don’t think your chances of getting help in the bp forums to debug a premium theme are very high.
“asked Kleo support and they had a look and said it is related to buddypress. ” – I think that’s like saying your issue has something to do with “http” since it’s internet related. I would of expected a much better answer from a premium theme developer that seems to have made more then $200,000 selling a theme that claims to be “the greatest community theme on the market”
just one more reason I sigh when it comes to bp and themes.
and my 2 cents on the issue without knowing much about any of this.In reply to: Fatal error@collinkemp – in this kind of situation I either ftp in or get to cpanel file manager.. either download a copy of your wp-content folder with http://ftp.. or make a zip / compressed folder of your wp-content folder to have a backup.
Then go into your wp-content/plugins/
– delete rtmedia err “buddypress-media” folder. Check if site comes back.
– if not start deleting other plugins and checking.. and or
– delete the non-default themes your have in you wp-content/themes folderThis should get you back to basic wordpress and buddypress and default theme – then you should be able to get into your wp-admin section and go to appearance – themes and select one of the defaults..
you may figure out what the hiccup was during the delete and check process.
sometimes when my rtmedia updates I have to go into permalinks – change them, save, then change them back and save again.. don’t know why, but 50% of the time rtmedia updates causes a bunch of my static “pages” to be “404 not found” and the permalinks change then change back and save fixes it.. it’s a weird bloated plugin.. but glad it’s here.
as lionel pointed out in other dupe topic – there is another forum replies on similar issue in regards to this when using localhost / wamp on local server I guess – https://buddypress.org/support/topic/resolved-404-the-requested-url-not-found-on-this-server/
In reply to: admin cant able to create a groupugh – just realized this is a duplicate thread from same poster.. grr.. how to merge. meh.
another answer to this – what I do when this situation arises first:
https://buddypress.org/support/topic/the-requested-url-groupscreate-was-not-found-on-this-server/#post-244269@varun404 – first thing I would do is go to settings -> permalinks.. make note of what they are.
Then change them to something else.
save.
then change back to pretty permalinks.
save.then check your url – is it working then?
if not.. then make sure you have created pages that bp needs, and associated them:
if that is all set write, I would check my htaccess to make sure it is writable and wordpress is indeed adding code to make permalinks work.
In reply to: Hide Buddypress pages from google serch.@nithin270 – any changes you make for search spiders is going to take weeks (at minimum) before they are reflected in the search results.
I suggest doing some robots.txt additions (will list mine below) – however realize that long ago google made a decisions that even if your robots.txt says to disallow crawling something, if another page on the web links to your subpage that is blocked by robots.txt, it will still show the url in the search results – but have a description something like “this sites robots.txt prevents google from displaying description of this result”.
There has been debate about that decision, but it is what it is.
The only way to really prevent a page showing up in results is to hide it behind a password (like htpasswd) – however google does normally remove results if that page (or header info of images) includes “noindex” in the head of the page (there is a tricky way to add this to images – it was pointed out to me in the google webmaster forums)
given that bp pages like members are kind of pseudo pages, using something like yoast (currently as far as I know) – will not give you an option to add noindex, nofollow to your member pages..
you may be able to modify the code I got from wpmudev that checks “if is member page, then add meta description as…” –
( http://premium.wpmudev.org/forums/topic/bp-meta-tite-description-for-groups-and-members-pages#post-806736 )
to… also check “if is members page” – then add “meta name=”robots” content “noindex, nofollow”..
(something like that)that should remove your members pages next time google crawls your site and the crawlers send the info back to the main algo/index..
I think there is a way to log into google webmaster tools if you have claimed /verified your site and click on urls to ask the big G to remove them as well. (I have not messed with that stuff in a while )
I also suggest adding a robots.txt file similar to this:
Disallow: */activity/p/*
Disallow: /docs/
Disallow: *send-invites*
Disallow: */groups/*members*
Disallow: */groups/*media*
Disallow: *widget-title*
Disallow: *members/*activity*
Disallow: *members/*notifications*
Disallow: *members/*friends*
Disallow: *members/*groups*
Disallow: *members/*docs*
Disallow: *members/*media*
Disallow: *acpage*
Disallow: *messages*
Disallow: *friends*
Disallow: *settings*
Disallow: /*/comment-page*
Disallow: *register*
Disallow: *login*
Disallow: *profile*
Disallow: *admin*
Disallow: *includes*
Disallow: *content*to prevent some other quirky indexing issues with bp.
If your member profile stuff is sacred, then I would hunt the forums here for what others have been messing with that prevents profile info from being displayed if a user is not logged in… as there are plenty of indexing spiders that will not follow the robots.txt or robots index rules in <head> – in fact some specifically look for these things and purposely crawl and scrape stuff that is blocked –
Disclaimer: I am not an expert, not a real coder. Research these things with other sources, your situation may vary.
“when user reply or comment on any post” – when I hear that I think of replying to a post in wordpress language, which is a chrono blog post, and not a ‘static “page” ‘ – however I am going to assume you mean replying in the various comment reply places all throughout buddypress; like activity comments, group updates, etc.
I am confused by what you are saying, but it’s only becuase I have no clue about how any of these things work. I’m still trying to learn php and then going to try to learn how wp and bp actually works – and that looks like it’s gonna take a long time.
However now that you have provided some details I am sure one of the much smarter people around here will be able to guide you in the right direction.
In reply to: New plugin: BuddyPress Mute@henrywright – I finally added this plugin and gave it shot – not sure if it’s tested for multi-site isntall – or if it should be “network activated” or what.. but I tried it that way, made a blog post about the new functionality.. and then clicked over to “site-wide activity” – about 80% of the items from the past 4 days were gone…
so I deactivated the plugin and then they were all back.. lots of different people with my install – some were rtmedia picture posts, some were status updates, group updates – just some, not all random people stuff was just out…
I see on your wp plugin page you suggest bug stuff to post on github, but I have yet to sign up for an account there. I have an article saved on how to git/hub.. but have not jumped into that pool quite yet. So thought I would mention it here.
I installed budyblock at the same time.. not sure there would be any conflict – I had not clicked to block or mute anyone yet, and was in as admin.. thought I’d mention it.
ps – I’d love to see a function added where like..when looking at sitewide activity – and there is a “blah in the Group Gross Food” an icon next to any group things that pop into the feed – would be cool to have a “mute all from this group” option..
Looking forward to more testing soon.
@ajaysingh-1
man – there is post_comment, post_update – and a bunch of others on the hookr io page
http://hookr.io/plugins/buddypress/#index=anot sure what you mean post button comment section..
hmm.. section on the site-wide activity page?
via private message emails / replies?hmm.. group replies?
I don’t know anything about the functions and code actually – but hopefully the hookr info will help ya, or this comment will help you detail what exactly you are looking for – so if someone does know about this code they will know more about what you mean..
In reply to: Issues displaying BuddyPress on my theme@itslino – yeah I don’t see much about them in there either – the theme docs are a mess here, and non-existent for 2015 theme as well.
There was some site that listed a bunch of wordpress code and buddypress code – searchable and such, but I can’t .. wait I think it’s called hookr.io or something – found it – http://hookr.io/plugins/buddypress/#index=a if you type css in the filter box it limits what is displayed – it may help – but not sure. I have no idea how that works, if it’s up to date, and if all bp styling stuff actually has “css” in it’s tag or whatever.
I guess you could change to 2014 theme and go to each page and right click property inspector and copy the css.. then put that into notepad and search for everything “buddypress” – at least that’s what I have been thinking about doing.. I think there is also some different styles with 2014 and 2015 depending on what screen size you are viewing with – so may hve to check various media queries.. no idea if there is a better way.
I want to make some custom bp themes, but I can’t even get proper docs on working with latest / best coding practices with the wp default themes at the moment. There is some details on thesis.com err.. themeshaper.com – I think that stuff is out of date though –
If you get it figured out I’d love to see some info put together on all this.
In reply to: Issues displaying BuddyPress on my themehave you looked into the codex area?
( https://codex.buddypress.org/themes/ )I have not yet begun to learn all that, so I can’t tell you anything about it.
Themes and buddypress and me are a challenge to say the least.. especially if you mixin rtmedia plugin.
Only thing I have been able to do is go back to the 2014 theme and try modding that.
In reply to: want to change the back ground colourman your theme there has a lot of places where the background color is set.. some for different screen sizes.. some just setting the background for menu and the search box..
open up your style.css and do a ctrl+f (find) for: background
start trying different values is all I can guess. I can’t find that particular rule using property inspector or firebug.. maybe you just need to add the rule. (save a copy of your original)
I’m not really sure, and not a css expert or anything..
But this isn’t really a byddypress fourm question – it’s more of a question for the theme and plugin designers perhaps.. maybe do some searches for “modifying wordpress themes”
@shubham9
I have not used this, but I was looking at it yesterday and now thinking about it ->I imagine you could read up on the latest discussions about parse_Args and such and code this yourself.. I have a good imagination though..
I myself have been considering asking for a way to display both the “profile tab” and the “activity” tab info below that.. with a selectable filter for “Just John Doe” or “John Doe and friends” or something like that.. think that would be cool – and likely not too hard to mashup…
but I’m still learning php, maybe someone else has an idea on how to make that happen with a simple them functions.php mixin .. I already have a think in bp-custom to make the default profile page show the profile tab instead of the defaults.. so the code is here and there around here I guess.
In reply to: Increase in fake visits since install@projectslimited – yeah, welcome to the club! I had one bp site with registration turned off for 18 months.. turned it on to test some thing – hours later – dozens of new “groups” and spam accounts.
My main site I depend on buddypress humanity as main line of defense.. but also add the plugin “good question” (changing the defaults on these two!)
I also use “geo ip block” on all wp sites now. (changing some defaults)
that seems to help 95% – then I got so tired of the manual spammers that I added the apache gep redirect thing from maxmind lite.. and block all visits from Russia, China, Ukraine, and a few others completely.
Saves a ton of bandwidth and server resources – and makes it easier to find the cdir blocks of US and UK ISPs to block via htaccess (none of my web site visitors are using COLO Crossing Transport to visit my site- so all their cidrs eg:
23.94.144.0/20
23.94.144.0 – 23.94.159.255blocked…
I have been messaging with a wordpress plugin author about modding his plugin that pulls info from failed logins and puts them into iptables – suggesting a few mods that can make that info useful to those of us who do not have access to or want to get into iptables modsec stuff – hopefully those suggestions will come into a new version of that plugin later this year.
with my multi-site setup I use a ‘new blog defaults’ plugin to set any new blogs created to automaticcaly have the noindex setting in wordpress, and noinded nofollow settings from yaost.. so even if one manual spammer gets in and makes blog – it does no good, and does not show up on the radar of the other spammers.
I recently had to block Japan entirely as I started getting daily spam hits from there.. of course each person’s setup will vary – I can’t block all countries on all my sites, so some sites I set the ip geo block to whitelist just one or two.. on other sites I setup a blacklist to block 20 or so..
In reply to: [Resolved] BP user menu items@style960
Maybe a similar thread from 4 days has the info you are looking for?
https://buddypress.org/support/topic/how-to-add-user-profile-link-to-specific-menu/
