In reply to: New Plugin – BuddyPress Links – Beta Supportawesome plug-in !
great job !
question:
is it possible to have the “link categories” the same as the “Groups” ?
so literally having “Links” asscoiated to each Group, same as we have a Forum associated to each Group ?
@nongiven
sorry, I am not a programmer and do not know how to do this.
Just a suggestion:
for the “search-issue”: could you please open a new thread regarding this topic ?
guys:
keep it simple !
1)
if you talk about a “Dashboard”, then we are talking about the very ugly and un-handy Dashboard-interface which we do have currently for users writing their Blogs, etc.
I have actually disabled my Dashboard because this interface is just too complicated for a normal user not experienced with WP.
2) Friends:
as said: we do have the tabs “Groups”, “Members”, “Blogs”, “Forums” (some people will have “Events”, etc.).
Just make a simple tab named “Friends” and put all the friends information into this, like:
– “all friends currently online”
– “newest friends online”
– “most active friends online”
– “most popular friends online”
– “friend online since xx minutes”
– “friends status updates”
– etc.
3) Members:
for the information about “Members” which are not friends, we do have the tab named “Members” already. Put all the “Members” information into this page, like:
– “all members currently online”
– “newest members online”
– “most active members online”
– “most popular members online”
– “member online since xx minutes”
– “member status updates”
– etc.
4)
for the “Site Wide Activity” filters, we should have:
– Members
– Friends
– Blogs
– Groups
– Profile
– Status
– Events
5)
TRAC-ticket:
this is my problem – I do have many ideas but I am not able to translate those into the real world as I am not a programmer.
Please make sure I get a free copy of your plugin – or even better yet: program it so good that it will make it into BP-core.

definitely the “status update” of my friends is the first thing users are interested in.
see this trac-ticket and also the very nice screenshot:

…..the trend is your friend

I agree with you that too many options will confuse people, but this is not too much and I strongly feel those options will provide a great user-experience.
We currently do have the tabs “Groups”, “Members”, “Blogs”.
Why not having a tab named “Friends” ???
KISS
Keep It Simple & Stupid
done.
https://trac.buddypress.org/ticket/1318
it is currently not possible to select “Milestone 1.3” within TRAC-ticket-system.
why not make something like this:
– “all people currently online”
– “newest people online”
– “most active people online”
– “most popular people online”
– “person online since xx minutes”
– “all friends currently online”
– “newest friends online”
– “most active friends online”
– “most popular friends online”
– “friend online since xx minutes”
well, at least it should list all pople starting with letter “K” when searching for “K” within members…. then we can get rid of the current “A to Z” directories….

In reply to: Messages bug ?I do not understand why simple things like a “send-to field” are being made more complicated than they actually are ?
This auto-complete is probably nice if somebody understands how it works, but for a user new to the website, this is just a point at which he will most likely get an error-message and walk away. JavaScript and AJAX should only be used when it provides a value-add.
Why not just create a simple drop-down-field with all names of friends ?
The key for BuddyPress is to keep things as SIMPLE as possible.
There is a reason why Facebook, Craigslist, POF.com, etc. are successful: KISS

In reply to: buddpress.org messages brokehey my friends, I am not able to send a Private-Mail via this website buddypress.org , even not to my BP-friends….. could you please fix this ?
I am using the latest FireFox-browser, but I am quite sure this is not related to the browser being used. The PM-system has worked fine previously, something must have happened in the meantime……
Thanx

In reply to: BuddyPress Privacy Component: An UpdateI was just thinking about going “online” with my website, but I do not dare yet because of the missing “Privacy Component”.
I think this “Privacy Component” is the single most important feature before everything else…..
In reply to: Future of BPjust to clarify:
I do LOVE BuddyPress and I am 100% confident that this is the “next big thing” !
There are a few bugs but this should not stop us to support this great software and improve it as a community.
Unfortunately, I am too dumb to be a programmer, but I am trying to help and sitting for hours at testbp.org in order to find some bugs…..and report it in the TRAC-ticket-system (which is a really great tool to track and see how the development of BP-software is continuing to improve).
The BP-development is all in all very visible – which is a great and honest way (other software companies rather try to hide their bugs…).
Just keep up the great work guys !
Thanks,
Erich
In reply to: enbeddding YouTube-videos ?O.K. thanks a lot !
sorry, this was a typo:
I am running:
WPMU 2.8.4a
BP 1.1.2
I have changed my “wp-config.php” file and entered the new password.
But still the above described error-message is showing up with mentioning the file named “wp-db.php”.
I am using latest BP-version 1.0.3
Jus try to change the Password of your database and you will see this error-message within the “Forums”-page of your website.
In reply to: Future of BPI guess we just need to get Automattic to hire a few more guys to be joining the BP-core-development-team.
There are a few very talented guys in the developer community, like Marius, Nicola, etc. (sorry if I missed anyone, I am sure there are many talented guys in this community).
I wonder why these guys have not been invited to join the core-team yet – at least for a limited timeframe…..?
I would be willing to donate my share, for having a few more developers in the BP-core-development-team……just let me know where I should send the money to…..
I just changed the Password of my database at my hosting-provider.
Now I get the same error as mentioned above.
Warning: mysql_get_server_info(): supplied argument is not a valid MySQL-Link resource in /www/htdocs/w00xyz815z/wpmu/wp-includes/wp-db.php on line 1202
So what do I need to change in line 1202 within the file “wp-db.php” so that WPMU or BP will work ?
My website was running fine so far, I just have changed the database-Password and then I get this error…….
The error is showing at the following path of my website:
In reply to: mystery-man image being in core ?In reply to: The Nourish NetworkHi Lisa,
I just ordered your book “BuddyPress for Dummies” via Amazon.com
It seems this book is not published yet ? When will this book become available ?
….. and yes, I am a BP-Dummy

Many thanks,
Erich
many thanks for your feedback !
So looking at the current pages “Members” (testbp.org/members) and “Groups” (testbp.org/groups) , I am currently missing the features “newest”, “active” and “popular” at those pages.
We have this at the “Home”-page at the “members column” and also at the “groups column”, but why not having those features also at the “Group”-page and at the “Member”-page ? It would even make good sense there, as the number of listed Groups and listed Members at those pages is much higher.
So maybe you are considering similar stuff for the “Blogs”-page (testbp.org/blogs) ?
A user is rather interested to see “newest”, “active” and “popular” Blogs than a list of Blogs sorted by “A-B-C”. Having a list of Blogs being shown by “A-B-C” as we do have currently, the user needs to walk through a list of hundreds of Blogs in order to find the e.g. “most popular” Blog.
The same goes for Forums (testbp.org/forums): we currently see “6 Popular Group Forums”. Why not also showing “newest” and “active” Group-Forums within those 6 Group-Forums at the top of the page ?
Besides that: give the Admin the ability to make 1 Group-Forum within those 6 Group-Forums to be “sticky” ? See my TRAC-ticket: https://trac.buddypress.org/ticket/1240
Also sorting “alphabetically” just by “paging” would be fine, the “A-B-C”-tabs are not needed after all, as if somebody wants to search for all members starting with e.g. the letter “K”, he just performs a search by entering the letter “K” into the search-box.
BTW: I just tried what I have described above:
I entered the letter “K” into the search-box and searched for members.
The search-result is actually NOT showing members with the letter “K” (member-names showing in the search-result are actually NOT starting with letter “K” and have also NOT included the letter “K” in their name). Is this a bug ???
just an idea:
why not having the “User-Blogs” sorted by “most popular blogs” like we have “most popular groups” , “most popular members” and “most popular forum topics” ?
Instead of having an alphabetical directory with “A-B-C”-tabs, why not just having the option to sort by “alphabetically”, “newest”, “active” and “popular” ?
