You would also need to set the #content to float:right

This is a basic source ordering technique that’s been employed #container acts as a wrapper and must be floated opposite to the sidebar direction to allow the sidebar to position alongside but after in the source markup

It is very basic which is surprising considering the sales pitch given for it – leading one to believe otherwise. Personally I wouldn’t touch this I’ve been non too impressed by what’s offered on that site.

It’s a shame but Erwins Events plugin was better but sadly it’s – for the moment ?- seemingly a stalled plugin

Not sure why ‘offended’, this matter cuts to the core of the issue of third party plugins causing potential damage to projects such as BP, I would have thought experienced plugin authors would have got this matter dealt with straightaway if as Andy says it’s a matter of 5 minutes work.

I understand the pressures of work and time constraints having, as I do, to work 7 days a week to hold a small web dev company together but comments like ‘I’ll update my plugins as and when I have time’ ?! is a comment like that really necessary?

As a possible feature to add: is it possible to allow individual users to create/import albums from their flickr account, I ask as there was a bpdev flickr plugin that allowed users to very simply import an album from their flickr account, which I guess suits many as it’s quick and easy and they may not have their photos readily available, sadly that plugin and site appears to be completely moribund and another community ‘feature’ that will need to be removed upsetting those members who have used the feature.

Placing notices like that nagging users is extremely amateurish and shouldn’t be done

Have we really no clearer idea of the show stopper some of us are experiencing?

It’s an odd response.. or lack of

I’d kind of like to hear that a project that is getting as mature as WP (this isn’t really a BP issue after all) would be considering this aspect of plugin authoring and placing some form of control or seal of approval on certain plugins

Clearly I was not looking hard enough so having found the callback in functions.php the need now – having copied it over to child theme function.php – is how to apply classes to the li elements – has anyone any approaches to adding odd even classes to the comments.

Am I simply missing something obvious? and need to look harder :-)

Hmm available for all in the main WP plugin repository, this is what’s not great about all and sundry banging out plugins without any apparent checks in place, most users haven’t a clue what they are installing really.

Think it’s been mentioned in general before but there really needs to be a sanctioned, vetted, approved plugin repository where at least users can be directed and assured of reasonable security then it’s a case of install plugins from elsewhere and on your own head be it.

Kristina unfortunately the upgrade from 1.1.* to 1.2.* is not straightforward you will need to read carefully the link that Andy provided and decide what parts of that apply to your situation i.e are you intending on trying to use the old theme and / or preserve older functionality in which case there are explicit steps you must follow with regards installing a backwards compatibility plugin. If you’re not worried about older features and are happy with accepting the new look and feel of 1.2 then you will probably need to ensure all buddypress plugins are deactivated (that may mean renaming them if not possible to deactivate from dashboard) then removing the old theme files as mentioned in the instructions then reactivate the new version of BP and test that things work with that alone before activating those plugins that are compatible with BP 1.2

Yeah when the word ‘unlimited’ is mentioned/used always check just what is meant by that as the word in reality does not exist there is no such thing as unlimited, resources are finite. I would be checking logs to see what had happened to cause your host to take this action and find out exactly what bandwidth you had actually used.

A host that deactivates a site is not a host that you want to be with! unless that is you had received a fair amount of warning?

Regardless of what may happen you have to insist – if you haven’t access – that you have access to your files and database to allow you to take a DB dump if you are intending moving.

Members? site members or group members? if group member then surely you just set the group to private which still shows it just not content.

Not sure it is a libcurl issue as someone earlier reported it working with the same version as myself. I’m awaiting Peters or anyones thoughts on the ModSecurity question I posed as I’m getting errors that look as though ModSecurity is kicking in, but it’s a complicated module to understand.

Throwing this out there: regarding the auth issues I have a feeling it might be a ModSecurity issue

Peter I’m emailing you some pertinent lines from my server error log to glance over.

In fairness I guess that this post on this thread wasn’t too helpful and got a lot of hopes up especially given the implied timelines and nearness of completion:

    https://buddypress.org/forums/topic/most-effective-events-plugin

Great News! Heard back from Erwin re bp-events and he authorized me to post an update (quoted)

I am working with Dave Aubin to make bp-events work with 1.2,

including the new templates. That is just days away (I hope), then

I turn the code over to Sven who has been working on integrating the

excellent jQuery plugin FullCalendar (and has the code ready to go)

once I hand over the bp-events 1.2 code.

I tell you, working with the new template system without any

documentation has been quite the chore as I am sure you know as well.

Once that is all working I will release a preliminary version

and work on some additional features/widgets.

So, I hope bp-events 1.2 comes out within a month of the

official bp 1.2 came out, so in all, not too bad!

BP 1.2 was released on Feb 16th so I think it’s safe to ball-park a working copy around mid march, by his estimation. Suffice to say I am fired up.

Utterly respect what you are saying Erwin, sad though that you feel you have to state this so emphatically.

From my personal and selfish :-) perspective coming to BP from Ning one of the things I was asked to replicate was an events page similar to that which our small community had enjoyed and used, naturally after hunting around came across your plugin and was happy to find it then a little sad to find that the mapping functionality was not working due to a BP upgrade and your lack of time to fix this aspect; no matter i thought it will be sorted eventually and the rest of the plugin behaved perfectly and we needed it so I proceeded with implementing and styling to our requirements, at this point it’s worth noting the, and this has been raised elsewhere, notion of the Canonical plugin, we have been surprised at the lack of what many would consider core Social Networking features in BP by this I mean aspects such as Links. Events, and general Media capabilities, all things evident in the other big players in this arena. Events was a plugin that I felt and still feel ought to be part of the core and NOT a plugin along with BP-Album and the Links plugin.

Events was further broken ireprably by of all things our upgrade to WPMU 2.9.1 at which point I had to remove it altogether, this didn’t look good and I was asked questions for which I had to try and reassure people that Events would reappear when we did the next phased upgrade of the community to BP 1.2.

The above is in no way intended to attempt to make you feel guilty whatsoever I honestly sympathize with your situation, What it is intended to try and illustrate is how vital certain plugins and the functionality they add are, we can come to rely on them yet find that there is no real support for them or that the author simply doesn’t have time to continually work on keeping them up to date; of course the response can often be that we are free to take on the plugin ourselves after all this is all open source stuff!! But like yourself I have precious little time, I cannot sit all day playing with plugin code, code that at this stage I am not up to speed with, all the free development time I have is devoted to trying to get a working theme ready so we can upgrade to BP 1.2 most of my time in reality is spent keeping the core of our small web development company running.

So what to do? Plugins are both at once a strength and a weakness to projects such as this, strange as this may sound.

Your plugin was great and I only hope that perhaps someone with more time on their hands can take up the running with this and more importantly that maybe the core developers can maybe look at what constitutes the real core offering of a Social Network App in terms of features and make plans to bring in the work you have done to date and make it a solid part of the core rather than a plugin.

Whatever happens be assured that I think most of us with any development experience and / or too little time to get anything done appreciate your feelings and frustrations at the pressure brought to bear :-)

<snip>so I can silence this discussion

:-) that’s a bit dictatorial isn’t it, but it is your project :-)

So Andy hows this for a different analogy in reference to the assertion about forums/groups and the deanjrobinson link you refer to now and again.

Taking a forum analogy Groups could be analogous to being the sub forums such as those we have on CSSCreator it is a forum but within that forum we have sub forums labeled ‘Beginners CSS’, ‘Layouts & styling’ etc so these are in fact BP groups and in the forum analogy you do not need to join that sub forum to post to it and as you state you do not need to join BP groups either to post to their forum.

This does raise the issue though why do we have that ‘Join A Group’ capability is there actually a point to that feature? Naturally I accept that I may be overlooking the reason?

    @hnla

    Participant

Chaps I think the OP does actually make reference to understanding the essential difference between WP & WPMU

The question asked is whether there is some OTHER reason one is better over another apart from multiple user blogs, and I believe the answer to this question is no! BP runs just as happily on standard WP as it does on WPMU with the only real difference being no user created blogs just Groups and group forums and the one master site blog?

Andy is best placed to answer this though.

    @Symm2112

With CentOS it might not be that easy to upgrade even for those with full root access to server. Love CentOS but baffled by

It’s reluctance to upgrade packages, PHP is also an issue with latest package version stalling at 5.1.6I I configured a third party repo on repute that provided latest versions and have it take over dependencies for PHP but the upgrade failed as I need to remove or upgrade packages such as MySQL first, at the moment I’m reluctant to break a working server as have little time to play around fixing it.

Brilliant that you and Peter nailed the problem down finally though.

If in future release you can add video and audio then you’ll have your absolute canonical BuddyPress all round media plugin – and can hassle Andy to add it as core.
