    @all, everybody who has problems with authorization please reply your curl version number.

    I think it might be a old curl version thats gives the problem.

    Not sure if this is in reference to the issue I and Anointed were having but my curl version is:

    libcurl/7.15.5 OpenSSL/0.9.8b zlib/1.2.3 libidn/0.6.5

    btw did you get my server details I sent you?

    It’s funny Marco, you asked about zebra striping some two weeks ago in this thread:

    https://buddypress.org/forums/topic/easy-change-of-activity-design

    https://buddypress.org/community/groups/how-to-and-troubleshooting/forum/topic/easy-change-of-activity-design/

    and I provide one possible approach to help out, did it just go unnoticed?

    Yep sounds like you have covered just about everything. Admin and User tags sounds very useful. ‘Perfect templates’ inspires lots of confidence, hopefully that will act as a role model for other plugins.

    Not necessarily accept, but feeling sort of resigned to, still trying to see the actual process and how the circumvention of so many disparate steps to thwart these little idiots is occurring. I still intend on trying put a stop to these but at the moment not about to waste too much further effort on it, I tend to catch them within minutes of signup and remove them so it doesn’t upset the community too much.

    Another step I took was to place a trap on php curl scripts attempting to download the register page, that put a stop to a few signups I think.

    Facebook style. But really don’t code it so we theme developers can’t re arrange it.

    Was going to say exactly the same as modemlooper has.

    Theming must be left as much as possible to the fronttend coders, I understand the necessity to have to have some default layout out of the box but it’s crucial that if we develop themes (rather than skins ) they be as sacrosanct as possible. I already have a degree of apprehension in building themes after the transition from the 1.1.* approach to 1.2 where the default theme is moved to the plugin directory for ease of upgrading as this suggests each upgrade will actually cause us issues.

    Modemloopers suggestions are just about on the money, group albums, and maybe the ability to aggregate all albums on one page possibly? but not sure if that is that important just reminded that SN such as Ning have a page where all uploaded images may be viewed.

    @hnla – Deciding how to dimension thumbnails, based on images with widely varying aspect ratios, and then present them in a grid, has been a problem that has dogged graphic designers since the earliest days of the Internet.

    Tell me about it , our main concern are estate agent web sites, and have continual headaches with image resizing and agents trying to upload portrait images that need to fit to a specified width and blocks; as a frontend layout coder it makes me want to cry when my layouts get destroyed.

    However regardless, thumbnails need to resize original to a specified width regardless of aspect ratio to a degree.

    I happened to grab a rectangle wider than high to test with and would have had to accept that being resized proportionally to ~50px wide ending up with some minuscule height of around 10px :-)

    We had a property portal site that members could upload company logos to a profile page we needed to produce a listing for those profiles and a thumbnail of the logo and the problems we had with users uploading hopeless aspect ratios for resizing were ultimately defeating and no we didn’t provide cropping as the users would have been too confused by that.

    tbh having looked at your hosts site as well I wouldn’t have been able top pass a judgement as to whether they were big or small, there are a lot of factors involved in good hosting and these are not necessarilly apparent just by looking at a site.

    If they have offered to tweak settings to you requirements that is a good sign, good customer support counts for a great deal with hosting.

    If your happy with this host I would stick with them, especially if they are willing to tune things as you need them.

    As for basic requirements you need Apache to allow overide so that .htaccess rules will work, you need mem limits for scripts in PHP set quite high (higher than default) PHP version is best at 5.2 or above.

    There are probably guides to optimum and required settings if you look around buddypress.org and wordpress.org and perhaps other members will chip in with min requirements for a healthy installation.

    Out of interest what sort of hosting account do have presently and what do you plan to upgrade to? and are you intending running WPMU for it’s blog creation capabilities.

    Hmm proxy servers could be legitimate though, couldn’t they?

    I empathise with the issue I still have to delete on average a dozen a day and have employed al the suggested fixes and a few domain blocks and no referer htaccess rules.

    I had this issue with iirc 1.2.2 and 2.8.6 on a test install, asked about it here and was told it should clear up with WPMU upgrade to 2.9, didn’t however! but no signs of any problems ever. Eventually the problem cleared up I hink when I probably did one further upgrade or at least during a period of much upgrading and deactivating/activating of plugins.

    I think the response from others is likely to be deactivate all BP plugins and reinstall BP at least I think I went the remove BP altogether route and allowed the system to report BP deactivated due to not available and then installed fresh copy and activated that. Personally I didn’t re-install backups I had no issue with WPMU upgrade and stuck with that.

    However let more experienced members advise you first, but the situation isn’t dire and will be resolvable.

    Hmm however ‘unlimited’ is somewhat of a misnomer, there isn’t really such a thing!

    I’m afraid that google search does not really throw up any particularly good hosts or ones hugely suited to WP/BP

    Far more important than unlimited space and bandwidth is a server set up to accommodate WP & BP, that will tend to rule out shared hosting or reseller hosting as you might not be able to configure crucial aspects of the server.

    A VPS solution is the best starting point really and even cheap/basic plans should provide enough HD space and bandwidth initially.

    I do stress the word ‘Tend’ in the above :-)

    It might be worth looking at the hosts that WP recommend as they are naturally all suited to WP WPMU BP

    Dragging things back to opening post I noticed a reference to only having 20MB HD space remaining! is that serious and accurate?

    I can’t vouch for WPMU/BP requirements but can tell you that in certain circumstances this could prove fatal for instance as an example We have production servers for a bespoke application we run (nothing to do with BP) this application has a series of tasks to run periodically throughout the day with the big ones being data import and processing of property details along with Images to be resized and duplicated, one of our tasks ran into issues where it wasn’t deleting the original file imports and simply stacking them up in it’s import folder resulting in ever increasing number of files until that one folder had 80GB of images! this crashed our tasks completely as available HD space had been reduced to less than a few MB and all tasks failed as they simply couldn’t create temp space where required.

    If you can definitely increase you available HD space You will need it ultimately if you are allowing blogs to be created and/or user uploads to occur.

    Did you run the ‘top’ command before upgrading just to see what resources were possibly hogging cpu and mem

    I would have probably rebooted the VPS first as that can free things up, however 128MB main memory is a small amount to try and run WP/BP in I would try and get it up a bit further than you have to be safe especially if the site gets busy.

    For some users with specific PHP and mySQL options set

    Hmm in a dev environment I tend to have very loose restrictions, and can run things as I see fit , it tends to be production environments where these sorts of issues would arise.

    What version of MySQL were you writing to?

    @hnla

    Successfully uploaded and saved an image so all appears to be functioning correctly now.

    Only possible issue I saw was that after initial upload the thumbnail is a clipped view of the full image and at no point did I see any means of cropping, and all thumbnail representations of the actual image are not resized but simply clipped; is this by design? or perhaps I have not addressed settings in backend correctly?

    @hnla

    downloaded your 1.6 beta zip and overwrote existing files, re-activated plugin and this time activation correctly created table wp_bp_album

    ok thanks again. I tried it with float:left

    it works !

    Yes knew it would ;-)

    I’ve removed the sidebar and I’m using this now:

    div.post {

    margin-left: 30px;

    width: 30%;

    float: left;

    but I get big gaps in there.I get posts side by side but after the third one I get a big gap then it shows me the next one

    ok here is a screenshot:

    http://img693.imageshack.us/img693/7530/37084352.png

    The big gaps are due to floats requiring to clear the last floated object they have to find a clear line, look at your SC closely the fourth element clears below the third. The initial approach to fix this would be to apply a min-height of a value equivalent to the tallest element; however that doesn’t change the fact, in your case. that the actual content is of varying height so you would still perceive that ‘gap’

    You could border each element then regardless of content height they would look similar height or live with the fact or set a limit to the content shown.

    If setting min-height you need to set height for IE <= 6 (filtered from sane rational Modern browsers) which doesn’t understand min/max but worked to a broken interpretation of the height and width properties and doesn’t correctly consider them as ‘Fixed’ but expandable so is in fact both fixed and min.

    Cripes leave that sort of thing open and you’ll end up with a blacklisted domain. the security aspect of this – as simple as it is – must be pretty tight

    @hnla

    Yes I can imagine what this will look like it will look like three rather narrow columns stacked one above the other and abutting the left edge of their parent element.

    the element in WP assigned the class .post is a block level element, block level elements occupy their own space requiring a new line so to speak i.e the second block level element has to find the next available free line to render on; this is why if you look back at my last post or two you will see me mention floating the .post element, you will only get block level elements to sit side by side if you either set them as floated or display:inline-block.

    Without more detail it isn’t really going to be possible to help you with your requirements, modemloopers advice earlier is probably best.

    You didn’t answer my second question!

    We know what you want but haven’t a clue how you are going about trying to achieve it.

    It would probably help people if you had a link to your site so that we could see what you actually had in terms of frontend output. (I’m assuming this is just a browser side issue rather than server side )

    And what happened?

    What CSS have you added/removed/changed other than the 300px width?

    You would need to float .post probably and limit the number of posts looped

    @hnla – two questions:

    First, did version 1.3 work?

    Second, are you running MySQL in “Strict” mode?

    Now tested a further install on 2.92 / 1.2.2.1 and for interests sake running backwards compatibility plugin.

    Same issue as previously described

    <snip>

    WordPress database error Table ‘powl_theowlmu.wp_bp_album’ doesn’t exist for query SELECT

    Checked my.conf and definitely not running in Strict mode.

    However a significant amount of other errors such as global-adminbar.php not found and internal redirect exceeded suggests that perhaps the test against backwards compatibility plugin is not a valid one.

    I assume I’m meant to be seeing some tables created on install? or only when an image is successfully uploaded?

    @hnla – two questions:

    Second, are you running MySQL in “Strict” mode?

    1/ No never tried 1.3, first install was with 1.4 and bad timing on my part as it was literally two minutes before you uploaded 1.5 :-) deactivated 1.4 unzipped new files reactivated, devision issues cleared but errors appeared as above.

    2/ Hmm Strict Mode – almost certainly not however not 100% sure but this was on my local dev running pretty loose in all server respects and think Strict Mode would have been an issue arising before as I have perhaps half a dozen test installs in various states and not having issues, it’s true also that I have a further company dev server and two live servers so get confused sometimes what is running what.

    I’m on the company network so am going to try installing to my local dev copy here and see what gives if it works here then it’s an issue with my set up which I’ll track down and report for the record.

    Downloaded 1.5 to cure division by zero and Constants issues, however uploading images failing:

    “There were problems saving picture details.”

    Have sql syntax errors in error logs reported seeming to revolve around the admin image quantity settings, also when simply clicking into album page an error is generated:

    <snip>

    WordPress database error Table 'mysite.wp_bp_album' doesn't exist for query SELECT DISTINCT COUNT(id) AS count FROM wp_bp_album WHERE 1 = 1 AND owner_id = 1 AND privacy <= 10 made by require, wp, WP->main, do_action_ref_array, call_user_func_array, bp_album_setup_globals, bp_album_query_pictures,

    Running pretty clean install of 2.9.2 & BP 1.2.2.1

    If you are simply running with the default theme on your site then you would change it via the Dashboard menu> Appearance > custom header and look for the link that says ‘Text Color’

    In MU, there *is* an option to block certain email domains. There’s a funny way to put in wildcards though.

    ,

    Thing is Andrea that doesn’t appear to make a blind bit of difference, we had a number of signups from half a dozen email domains repeated over and over, easy I thought, first line of attack drop those domains in the block list. Didn’t do a thing those same email domains kept coming through. I suspect that when someone looks into it they will find that BP registration bypasses this check somehow! sadly!
