    This is more a WP question, you can remove the comments by passing an empty array back to comment form in the template file, have a read of this post on WP support:
    https://wordpress.org/support/topic/remove-markup-notes-from-below-twenty-twelve-comments-box

    P.S. when you state you have tried something please actually say what it was you tried as it may have a bearing on the matter.

    As an author technically you/we shouldn’t use it at all not that it’s prohibeted from use in author styles but just that in the environment of WP plugins & themes it’s a poor practise; in general author styles it should be severely limited if used at all though!

    Not really getting why you need respondents to make your mind up, if you are considering releasing it into the WP theme repo then do so ( although granted there might be a certain amount of work modifying any aspects noted by the theme review team) If on the other hand you don’t then one presumes you continue to provide it as a premium theme and really are honour bound to support it.

    If you release it to the repo I’m sure it will be downloaded and tried out by people as there are not that many choices in dedicated BP compatible themes out there.

    A relatively simple suggestion for 2.0 โ€“ Get rid of tables in all templates so developers can style everything for mobile without having to override templates to convert tables to lists. Notifications and Messages use tables right now and they donโ€™t have to.

    This is fundamentally a really bad notion, you do not change markup to suit devices – ever! Markup exists to accurately describe data in a semantic manner if that means that a table is the correct element then a table is what is used; if a devise can’t handle that then it’s the devices problem, if you have to try and change the markup in that instance then so be it and good luck.

    ‘Notifications’ correctly uses a table to display a columner/row relationship of data it’s not a case that it needn’t, this is correct; if you tried to put that into a list you would break the header relationship and would need to lump all of a notifications meta into one list and then have to use something like a dl list to associate date received to the metadata.

    Of course though if you wish to modify the templates for your theme then you’re quite at liberty to do so that is why they are overloadable!

    BP experts seem to know (or are willing to share) the answer

    Firstly it isn’t really something that requires BP expertise nor is it some secret people are trying to hide from you.

    CSS is coding and requires some degree of understanding if you wish to start modifying code to some degree you’ll have to leave behind that notion of being a non expert ๐Ÿ™‚

    There is no general bit of code that can be provided to suit all users in this request, the start point for stating a general font color is the body tag as this is a inherited property however then that color can be overridden with other values further on down into the cascade so if it didn’t work on the body tag likely it is being stated somewhere else and as there is no particular set notion as to where as this is a stylesheet authors decision it’s hard to give anything other generic approaches. Using a tool such as firebug in FireFox you may be able to examine the elements that have styled text and see where they inherit things like color properties from in the stylesheet and then adjust accordingly.

    @henrywright approach adding !important might work however it’s not a good practise (sorry Henry ๐Ÿ™‚ )

    The reason people are always advised to use child themes is that this way you can make changes and be assured they won’t get overwritten in updates, now in your case looking at your custom theme with very bold coloured backgrounds the rules in the buddypress.css stylesheet that set activity meta to grey would need changing but to do this you would want to copy over that stylesheet or in your themes styles write very specific rulesets to override the BP ones.

    The process for copying over BP files is described here:

    As your title suggests best to open a trac ticket if you think you have found a bug or issue, it will get seen and dealt with there, whereas not so much so in the support form.

    Ah ok had forgotten about that thread, I’ll perhaps make a sticky thread outlining those steps so it’s a little clearer.

    Have either of you contacted the theme authors before asking here?

    Notifications was a new component in 1.9 if template files are overloaded as they are with CC then modifications need to be made to /members/single/home.php and dir added for the template include parts, only themes that run under theme compatibility or use bp-default directly activated will get the correct templates.

    Check with the authors whether there is an update for CC.

    @hnla

    What changes? There aren’t any real changes to template files.

    To avoid losing custom work to template files one should always be working in a child theme or a theme that has had the bp-legacy template files copied over to run directly in the theme i.e overloading the files BP uses from it’s core template files.

    You may need to explain exactly what your approach has been to templating, what files you have adjusted and in what location, and what changes you see that you need to deal with in your custom templates then people will be able to provide better help.

    @hnla

    But sounds as though this needs looking into further in respect of checking for BP standard components so a ticket might be appropriate in trac.

    WordPress was designed just so that people who didnโ€™t know how to code could build custom blogs and websites.

    No it wasn’t actually, it was originally just developed as a blogging app to be better than those that existed, and in the early days before the theme api or the plugins api were introduced you would have had to have some knowledge of basic coding. The notion that it should take all the effort and requirement to learn a little basic coding skills out of the equation didn’t really develop until much later.

    I’m sorry you feel aggrieved at the level of help or that you perceive an attitude from some here as for referring to the ‘Devs’ that is likely a little unfair, for the most part they are busy developing the core app and knowing most of them I can say that they don’t have an attitude or ever put anyone down.

    >You are lucky that you have users here helping one another, because for the most part they are the only one I see providing any support.

    No not lucky this is how forums have always been intended to work, this is a classic volunteer help forum and it’s the general users that help out and return to the project or community their knowledge and experience to help users like yourself who hopefully in turn then help out others in turn.

    Unable to replicate any issues either creating new or updating group avatars on 3.8/1.9.1 WP single site.

    Although it doesn’t sound like a theme issue it’s always advisable to change to a standard WP theme to double check if issue present if of course you haven’t already.

    > Iโ€™m conflicted on how much we can realistically support themes that deviate so far from the norm.

    I see no real conflict to be resolved, it’s impossible for BP to take into account unknown divergences from the core template api WP provides, if theme authors want to create something non-standard then sadly that’s their problem and unfair to expect BP to have to try and deal with this. The best BP can do and is doing pretty well is to tie in as much as possible to the set WP template approach and if all themes did the same – and frankly they probably could regardless of proprietary approach to frameworking – then this would be a non issue.

    >that now uncover pretty fatal flaws in several themes

    Flaws that existed and have existed in many themes that do their own thing.

    Where that leaves things is sadly fairly and squarely in the theme authors court to try and help provide a solution for template issues.

    On a sidenote on another thread I noted a response relayed from a theme author to the user on enquiry of how to resolve their theme issue that the theme author couldn’t possibly support every third party plugin issue that happened along! It’s worth perhaps pointing out to any theme authors that might happen past this thread that there are plugins and there are plugins that really are best described as modules that extend WP they transcend the notion of a simple plugin and leverage the WP API to it’s fullest, these plugins, and I’m thinking of BuddyPress and bbPress here are in wide spread use, and really the smart theme author might be advised to actually test their themes with both these ‘plugins’ to gauge the level of support the theme offers and where possible improve it!

    Obviously the above isn’t a great deal of help to those of you having these issues, but this forum is going to struggle to help on these sorts of issues being it’s primary purpose has to be directly related to BP issues and third party themes especially premium ones are something we can’t deal with due to lack of knowledge on how they are constructed.

    Sounds as though having another item labelled ‘members’ caused BP some issues, but hard to say for sure without lokking deeper into the code and testing things.

    Of course you can, and then instantiate your own theme_compat class if wished or just run from the root themes functions.php.

    What is the condition under which this will be called into play? Have you looked at the codex, read the theme compatibility guides on using custom templates based on group name. action etc that way you can have templates to suit certain conditions calling diff header files if necessary.

    @hnla

    Also please bear in mind some of these requirements are going to require some coding skills, you have a quite a few custom requirements which are going to be beyond the scope of the forum to provide simple answers on. Some aspects such as frontend posting may be served by third party plugins such as bp-simple-front-end-post though.

    @hnla

    You need to update your WP/BP versions don’t lag behind important updates/changes and security fixes.

    As for the issue, first place to start is with any plugins start deactivating to see if one of them is causing the issue.

    I can see that bp classes are added to markup so BP is in action, that the BP content isn’t rendered suggests that the themes page.php breaks the WP process BP relies on, you have tested by reverting to a theme that works to see if it’s a theme issue haven’t you?

    @hnla

    Participant

    Not an issue I’ve noticed with BP. Although it oughtn’t to be theme related it’s still worth reverting to a known good theme i.e twentythirteen and seeing if issue persists, also before that try refreshing permalinks by visiting the admin screen in settings.

    @hnla

    @modemlooper the reference was to the theme being looked for in WP repo or at least in general searches and in that sense an official standalone theme release which is what it will need and ought to be eventually. Well done though for getting that out there; we can link people to it who are worried and want to get ahead of the game.
