    and ensure you are using some form of server side compression i.e on Apache mod_deflate that will make far more difference than trying to minfy any client deliverable files, don’t mess with inline comments or human readable formatting if possible.

    I’m afraid this doesn’t sound like a buddypress issue, you mention issues with a custom theme and with bbPress widgets. You probably want to look to the theme authors/s for support, also try changing to a known good theme i.e one of the WP default series to establish if the same issues exist.

    And on a final note rest assured when the time does come to do anything remotely perceived as drastic 🙂 we will cover things with a detailed guide on the changes and how to deal with them under as many scenarios as humanly possible we can think of i.e child themes, copying over template files, updating functions files etc. and that will be available in the Codex . bp-default has been around in the wild for a fair bit of time so things are done with a degree of care and thought to keeping sites up and running.

    BUT at the same time, when I search for buddypress theme – it is is not showing up as a download option…

    That’s because it’s not available as a standalone theme, it has been suggested that it might be in future and likely will be.

    Less worry should be placed on this, people will be able to use bp-default for ever and a day if they wish, and it’s pretty easy now to decouple it from the core files and run the templates and styles from a theme or child theme.

    i think it is interesting in what buddypress/bbpress is suppose to be about community engagement which seems to be quit the opposite.

    I think that’s a little unfair, @mercime and I have gone to great lengths with the codex effort to make things as inclusive as possible with posts, tweets, polls, and requests in general for feedback from the community at large.

    It’s worth keeping an eye on BP blog posts & bpdevel.wordpress.com to keep abreast of what’s happening.

    One thing – perhaps to what Boone refers – that would help and that has been discussed and is favoured by some is to try and vring the three major aspects of BP under one domain proper so themeing, Documentation, and core dev exist as subdomains of buddypress.org and as such have their own homes for news and updates.

    This is a consequence of what the theme you have chosen is doing, it’s not a BP issue, you will need to get in and modify the styles or choose another theme – for some reason twentyfourteen thinks it a good idea to set .entry-content with a max-width: 475px; hmmmm!

    Have you followed any basic troubleshooting? how do things look if you switch to a known good theme e.g any of the WP twenty…. series do you still have no friend button? have you plugin conflicts? disable all plugins to test.

    It’s important to run through these basic troubleshooting steps.

    BP shows a listing of all members that have actively logged into their account, this is the directory members listing and requires a blank but named page as the other main directories do. If you have members that have joined but not logged in BP will not include them in the listings.

    You’re not attempting to hide anything, if you have created xprofile field groups other than the default ‘Base’ then anything in those groups for user profile input will not show on the standard BP registration form only on the users account profile screen. If you are following that principle and those fields are showing on the main registration form then something is going wrong and likely you have third party plugins at work?

    ‘Some themes’ is not a BP issue it’s a theme issue, BP developers develop BP in harmony with WP thus you always use the latest version of BP with the latest version of WP.

    If you added new fields that are optional then you probably ought to have added them to a new group and not the ‘base’ group where all fields show on registration.

    BP is not responsible for detail such as this, it cannot be aware of aspects such as gender, as WP does not collect this info and BP just provides the user with ability to attach additional user meta via xprofile, therefore it correctly uses the only form of personal pronoun that is applicable in such circumstances where gender is undetermined, ‘Their’.

    In the third person sense that BP refers to the specific user ‘their’ is both the singular form as well as the plural, and thus the correct use.

    However if people want to change this they are free to do so although it’s not straightforward.

    The update will be released soon, I would advise you hang on for it, as judging by post you may find it a little complicated to handle manually.

    Checking recent forum topics is always a good idea, and/or searching in case similar issues have been raised and answered:

    When I go to the Members pages ect there is nothing on the page are there supposed to be short codes there to display the correct information when someone goes to that page?

    NO nothing in the page.

    @steeleweed Please do not hijack other peoples threads, you should start your own topic on the issues relevant to your site, the OP issues are not necessarily identical to your own and two treads can’t be run in one topic.

    As we don’t really know what the issue is or have steps to reproduce then the fix awaited might be a long time coming, it is up to users to try and investigate issues many of which are often theme related. I suggest you set up a local test site on your own machine to test updates before rolling out to a production server.

    Sadly no the developers do not know how changes made may affect custom themes especially premium themes which often are badly coded and don’t follow WP coding practices.

    ? Delete the members page, clear it from trash and start over? not sure how else we can help given the detail.

    @hnla

    Point about asking about themes is that you must test with a known good theme to establish if this is a theme related issue, as far as premium themes go we can offer little support for them, and some will simply not work with BP due to their coding practises.

    What themes, be specific, I can’t replicate an issue with stock WP themes but can see the issue with bp.org

    Is this a clean install i.e are you testing with just WP & BP no additional plugins and using a theme that is known to work e.g twentythirteen/fourteen, are your permalink settings set to anything other than default, they must be set to day/month or similar options not ?p=123

    ’m really not sure… but it *would be* really cool if those functions were integrated in such a way that nothing more would be required other than to install WordPress, Buddypress, then a theme… and call it a day. Not that I’ve had a problem with needing to copy the templates over to other themes in the past, but it’d be really awesome to see this worked out

    This is the whole point of BP theme compatibility and has now been in existence since BP 1.7, you need to keep abreast of development changes on the BP blog and/or the codex documentation.

    You wouldn’t want to set your primary static page to ‘register’ as when logged in you’ll experience just what you’re seeing, the register page is a logged out page view. You need to re-think what you’re trying to achieve with template display, most likely you want a custom home page that checks for logged in/out states and fetches content appropriately.

    N.B On volunteer help forums ‘Urgent’ is a word best not used 😉

    @hnla

    No mention of what theme!

    In a standard template you would expect the template tag to be bp_activity_latest_update() the echo function rather than ‘get’ function and tags like that need wrapping in a check for the activity component activated, have you got the activity streams activated in BP settings?

    @yoshimitsu1234 Please always check the BP codex for matters like this.

    Installing Group and Sitewide Forums

    The bundled cut down version of bbPress that shipped with BP for groups was removed a few versions back, if you have legacy forums in use then it’s best to update things to use bbPress 2.* The guide above explains how to proceed.

    @4ella
    This snipped section from the link mercime provided, as can be seen it states existing instals using the bp-default theme will still use it it’s not going to suddenly stop working but changing to the theme compatibility process is in best interests.

    If you are already using bp-default, either directly or as a parent theme, don’t worry. BuddyPress 1.9 will detect that you need bp-default, and will continue to register it with WordPress. Note that if you switch away from a bp-default theme (say, for testing), the theme will disappear from Dashboard > Appearance. If you need it back, add the following line to your bp-custom.php file:

    add_filter( 'bp_do_register_theme_directory', '__return_true' );

    BP no longer carries the cut down version of bbPress, to provide group forums you install standalone bbPress plugin. Please use the BP codex as your documentation source, avoid help videos we’re hearing altogether too much about vague videos that are floating around.
