    @icepin while I write all my code as text domain translatable and if a plugin provide for a languages file lookup I would hardly ever really call the above ‘easy’ when a user simply needs to change one little character and where we’re not talking about a distributed theme or plugin.

    @idavidson

    The file that contains that translatable string is register.php if your theme is running bp in theme compatibility mode then the file being used lives in /bp-templates/bp-legacy/buddypress/members/

    However you are NOT advised to edit theme files residing in the core plugin, if you wish to directly edit a template file you must make a child theme of the theme you are using and copy the template files over and edit in the child theme.

    instruction for that may be found in the BP codex, and child theme creating guides in the WP codex.
    https://codex.buddypress.org/theme-development/theme-compatibility-1-7/a-quick-look-at-1-7-theme-compatibility/

    N.B. Any criticism of the above grammar or general syntax will be ignored! πŸ™‚

    No what you are describing having started is a theme compat approach renaming page.php to buddypress.php ( that can be located for neatness in /buddypress/ or /community/; mercim’s post directly related to using the now older bp-default theme files copied over now you have started on theme compat stick with it, your issue is going to be that the theme does something to mess up page.php BP needs that file to adhere to WP template principles you must have a proper loop with the_title() and the_content() tags in place

    Question is why on earth are you using bootstrap!

    Second question is isn’t jquery enqueued anyway!

    You would need to build a script to map the usermeta over to bp profile fields, then they will display automatically in the profile screens.

    @hnla

    just updated my last comment as you do have a choice to still follow older principles in building BP themes.

    So you couldn’t have been telling the theme to use sidebars on BP pages? It’s not BP aware, BP still works on the principle of a blank placeholder page with a name i.e ‘members’ but it renders that screen view via page.php if it doesn’t find other file names first (as outlined in the codex)

    The template pack post is now outdated, don’t follow, you need to re-factor a file to handle BP screens, there are two codex articles currently dealing with theme compat use those for guidance, further ones may follow but will be generic in nature in that it’s difficult to give specific advice on a per theme basis.

    Also be aware that all template pack plugin really did was copy over files to your theme and enqueue the scripts and styles, essentially it did very little from a developers point of view that they couldn’t do manually, you still have the option of copying files from bp-default theme to your child theme and sorting out the styles and scripts required in your own functions file, the templates then would be re-factored broadly along the lines that mercime outlined in that post, however we are trying to steer everyone towards theme compat as the norm now for either creating themes of creating child themes from parents.

    No the current theme compatibility documentation is up to date and doesn’t say don’t follow 1.7 steps. 1.7 introduced theme compat, 1.8 just extended the template hierarchy, you need to follow the steps outlined for creating child themes, creating a buddypress.php file based on page,php and then that buddypress file will need to updated to work correctly with your theme which sadly, as a lot of themeforest themes are is not compliant with the standard WP template system that BP works through.

    So use those guides they should put you on the right lines and if this is client work then oughtn’t to be too hard to figure out.

    P.S I note that you say told the theme that bp pages should have sidebars, so is this actually a BP ready /enabled theme ? If so and things aren’t working then you’re best of speaking to theme author or their support channels as they will no best how their theme is constructed and offer far better help.

    Your attitude on this matter is a little off, people are not upset because they stand to loose something it’s not about that whatsoever. You should care if you upset people! πŸ™‚ why upset people just to satisfy your requirements?

    and this statement beggars belief:

    You have to ask yourself what did they ever do for you? I seriously doubt they did a darn thing
    Myself and many others involved in buddypress give a huge amount of our time to this project so that you can have everything for free, if in doubt about this just check my trac ticket submission, comments, and patches to core files and I’m one of the minor players!

    And on that note can we have less of the jibes please, not everything is for free and the developers that actually keep these OS projects running have a right to try and get some paultry return on the considerable time they give to these projects, there are principles here but I’m not about to get into discussions about the nature and drawbacks of GPL licences.

    Closing this thread now.

    Technically that link shouldn’t have worked as this page is under the parent ‘legacy’ I’ve updated some of these template/theme pages with a clearer instruction that they are legacy docs and outdated.

    ah hmm yes, so I was a little wrong πŸ™‚ should have known this, just goes to show… did some work a while back mapping custom tables across to user tables then matching to bp profiles, probably missed these functions at the time.

    It syncs your MS sites or so I thought, but I may well be wrong.

    What news did you want? at this time there is no solution although I have opened a further ticket on the matter, but the solution if & when it does arrive will be in the form of a error trap and message return to the effect of saying spaces not allowed please use hyphens or no spaces.

    @hnla

    Typo? Seem to remember some typos in the code that were corrected so may have transposed through to the guides.

    Updated and corrected or should be, bound to have missed one though, took 4 attempts to get those done πŸ™‚

    and there you have it!

    Now we return the thread to the OP as there is a question remaining unanswered.

    Don’t thank me yet! You might be hating me in a few days:
    https://buddypress.org/support/topic/how-to-get-the-profile-field-name-and-its-value-in-the-members-loop/
    I plan on releasing it on the WP repository!

    Why! Is this deliberate confrontation? Generally speaking one wouldn’t do this or at least only do this if one didn’t give a hang about what people thought about you.

    @hnla

    @bphelp Why would you do this?

    @hnla

    BP is fully compatible with WP default themes it’s what we’ll test against amongst others.

    If you’re running in theme compatibility mode then BP uses page.php initially to render it’s screens, although you can overide that by creating new versions of that file, so you should see whatever sidebar page.php is showing.

    If you are doing anything contrary to basic theme compatibility you’ll need to detail that.

    There are a couple of guides on theme compatibility in the Codex which will help you understand your options.

    @hnla

    @haykayltduk check through tickets if you haven’t as there was one a while back on issues with setting default select options or something to do with that aspect of profile fields.

    @hnla

    Participant

    I already checked /wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-core/bp-core-avatars.php and everything is okay on there
    What exactly did you check in that core file? It’s unlikely an issue with a core BP file unless someone has been editing it or unless a bug has crept in very recently which I doubt.

    One thing you should have checked is whether the issue exists when you switch to a theme known to be generally ok with BP i.e twentythirteen or twentytwelve

    This sounds like a classic theme issue really.

    This thread is essentially a duplicate of one you already started, please don’t open multiple topics on the same question, as it splits& potentially duplicates those responses.

    The stock advice is never use 1 click instals, but try installing BP and see how it performs, trusting that you have established the WP install is working correctly first.

    @hnla

    ?? BuddyPress is a WP plugin, if you have WP running then you can activate BP.

    Buddypress uses bbPress to provide it’s forums for groups and is not a forum app it’s self, it does not, or at least as of V 1.7 have internal forums which used to be a stripped down version of bbPress.
