Do you have any custom functions in bp-custom.php? Are you allowing access to certain sections only to logged in members?

When I go to your site and enter some bogus urls, I do not receive a blank page. I get the bphome or bpmember page with the buddybar, search bar, footer, and a few other items.

    For instance if I type

    xxx.xxxxx.xxx/social/ssdsf/

It does not error, but it is not blank. There is just very little content

On a few bogus url attempts, it even redirected me the home page automatically.

Since I am not logged in, I’m wondering if you are doing some sort of check.

    John-

From what I can gather from Pierce2, your assessment is correct. He’s done a subdirectory install, just gets blank screens with bogus urls, and is running plain vanilla BP–no other plugins, using default themes.

    Pierce2-

    What is your site’s URL?

    Okay, to recap:

    • You are running a new install of WPMU 2.7.1 with BuddyPress 1.0
    • You’ve activated BuddyPress
    • You have no other plugins installed and activated
    • You are using the bphome and bpmember theme
    • You do not have any errors AT ALL in your server’s log files
    • You’ve installed WPMU as a subdirectory install
    • But, you are not positive if WPMU was working before you installed and activated BP

Now, if I understand your issue correctly, when you visit your domain, you can see the home page without any issue. It works fine. But when you click on any link it brings up a blank page without a 404 message.

Or, is it that everything works fine. You can see the home theme and get to the member theme without any problem. You are only seeing this issue when you provide a bogus url. It is only then that you get the blank screen? So, you are wondering why it is not a 404 page.

Okay, please verify that you have the following theme folders in the following places:

    bphome theme folder in /wp-content/themes/

    bpmember theme folder in /wp-content/bp-themes/

I am wondering if there is some file for the Main Theme that comes bundled with BuddyPress

There are two default themes that come with BP–the bphome theme and the bpmember theme.

My standard caveat when creating custom themes from the default themes:

Make sure that you make a copy of both bphome theme and bpmember theme. Your customizations should be done in copies, not the original. That way, if you have issues with your custom themes (and we all do when working on customization), you can switch back to the standard BP themes to see how things should work.

With regards to your second issue, this thread may help

I believe that thread is more about the user getting 404 errors. My problem is that I’m not.

    Pierce2-

    You’re correct! My mistake.

Okay, do have the the bpmember theme selected in WPMU’s backend?

BuddyPress > General Settings > Select theme to use for BuddyPress generated pages

    Good luck with the customizations!

If this issue is resolved, as best it can be given the nature of your topic, please set the light to green above.

You can use any WordPress theme for the home theme.

But, to have success integrating it with BP, you’ll need to copy the functions.php in /bphome/ to your new home theme’s functions.php file. Also, there are certain code elements in the header.php file of the /bphome/ theme that you’ll need to add to your own home theme.

You may then also want to design a custom member theme that takes the look and feel of your home theme.

There is no option called “BuddyPress”, under “Site Admin” menu.

    That is correct.

BuddyPress has its own menu grouping found at the very bottom of the menu group column. It is just below the Settings menu grouping.

    Thanks for the details.

Carefully read this thread and see if that solves your problem. Post back in this thread either way.

    installed via simplescript at bluehost

This may be your issue. You really should not be installing complex software platforms like WPMU by using third-party installers. You should manually install WPMU paying careful, close attention to the readme.txt file that comes with it.

Also, search the forums for “BlueHost” to see the issue other users have when using simplescripts. Here’s one to get you started.

the redirection plugin (checked that already), avatar plugin, wordpress.com stats, akismet, statpressCN, Sociable, Author Avatars List, google analytics

To isolate WPMU and BuddyPress issues, you need to deactivate all plugins. This means that BuddyPress should be the only plugin running period. If your site issues go away, then you activate one plugin at a time, testing with each reactivation, until you get the problem again.

not aware of any relevant errors

The question asks for a listing of any errors in your server’s log files, it does not ask for you to decide whether or not they are relevant.

When providing a listing of errors, you do not need to copy into the thread the entire contents of each error file. A single error can be repeated many times. We just need a single instance of each, unique error. More times than not that is sufficient. If we need more info, we may ask to see the entire contents.

For example: ‘team’ instead of ‘group’

It sounds like you are specifically talking about changing slugs. If that is the case, read this article that Andy wrote.

This is a basic WordPress question and not a BuddyPress question.

Pages cannot have categories or tags. If you want or need these, then you’ll have to use WP posts instead.

Here’s a link to a WP codex article on pages that will help answer some of your questions.

Now, you could use BuddyPress groups along with Burt Adsit’s BP Content plugin to accomplish your goal.

I’m literally about to leave for an evening out. So, if I can’t help you, perhaps someone else will pitch hit for me.

    but the buddybar doesn’t show

So, it was showing before upgrading to the latest trunk? Did you make changes to any CSS files that got deleted when upgrading?

    @jeffsayre

    Participant

    Devweb-

I am not aware of such a plugin or heard of anyone that has done this yet. It is an interesting idea.

I suggest searching or browsing BP trac to see if someone has added this as an Enhancement ticket. If you do not find it listed as such, you can add it yourself!

with the latest trunk i’ve solved this problem but now i don’t see the buddybar…

    Trunk can be your friend!

Did you make any changes in your theme file between using version 1.0 and upgrading to the latest trunk?

    Dennyhalim.com-

so it seems that bp cannot correctly calculate the time the blog last active.

this might related to timezone problem.

This thread shows you how to deal with this issue: https://buddypress.org/forums/topic.php?id=2437#post-13341

i check between the blog that cause problem and the blog listed before it,

    all have same plugin activated.

So, if you do not have any plugins activated anywhere, except BuddyPress, you still have this issue?

Okay, one more time! Since you did not provide me a friendly reminder when I failed to get back to you within 24 hours, are you still have issues with this problem?
