In reply to: Is bp dying a slow death?
@thekmen Where was the ticket in the Trac? I comb through the trac myself once a week and put tickets in the milestones that I can personally work on. Anyone else is free to grab a bug, move the milestone up, and patch it themselves all the same. This bug may have existed, but it wasn’t on the trac before 1.2.4 was released. If it was and we missed it, then we fix it now. We even put out 1.2.4.1 to fix a bit of code that snuck in that belonged in 1.3 without anything being said about the activity stream yet.
@erich73 Not a bad idea, but that kind of setup comes with added responsibility. I would love for someone to take that initiative and setup a BuddyPress testing farm of various installation types and domains if anyone is interested? TestBP.org is sort of a different animal too because it’s still hosted on a shared box with other sites that need to remain up to the world. Yes, it’s a testing ground, but it can’t be broken for /live/ testing and cripple the server either.

In reply to: Is bp dying a slow death?@hnla When there’s no tickets in the trac for that milestone, it’s a safe bet that the community at large feels it’s safe to proceed. So, we did it that way with 1.2.4 and the activity feed on the front page broke. The branch was there to test for months and lots of people worked hard to patch what they found, which is the reason 1.2.4 happened. I forget the numbers exactly, but 1.2.4 fixed something like 70 known issues, but it created 2 other annoying bugs at the same time that WP3.0 was launched. I typically have 5 or 6 different local test installations that I work from, with varying amounts of data between WordPress/MS/subdomain/subdirectory/Windows/Linux/English/Spanish. I do my best to run code through as many different variations as I can, but sometimes random bugs just slide through. The activity on the front page was one of them.

@andrea_r My puppies are snuggle thieves. They just take snuggles whenever they want them. Blame any lack of BuddyPress progress on my pups.

Sean, if you can wait a few more days an updated version of BP will be released to fix this issue and a few others.
In reply to: Is bp dying a slow death?Andrea is correct. The grab a shovel phrase is only meant as an analogy to say that the best way to get what you want done is to do it. If you can’t, that’s okay too, and try not to be upset if someone else isn’t doing it either.
There’s no rush to push the next version out because that’s how mistakes are made, and pushing out a new point release means telling 300,000 people it’s safe to move on based on 4 peoples wandering eyes in the trac. If more people want more results then more people need to be involved.

1.2.5 is due very soon. There are less than ten tickets in that milestone and I’m loosely aiming for Sunday. Don’t throw tomatoes if it isn’t until Monday.

There are mentions through out the trac, various forum topics, and IRC that drop when we’d like to push 1.2.5 out, but it isn’t something that we can just “do” because no one is testing the branch and no one is reporting back how various fixes have affected them.
Lastly, I’ll say that I want 1.2.5 out just as badly, because I want to focus on building cool new stuff for 1.3 instead of bug creator/exterminator for 1.2.x
In reply to: Forum threads not created…Huh… Very bizarre.
I consider deleting and reinstalling as admitting defeat, which isn’t something I take lightly.
But if your site is in a position to be able to start over, it’s a good way to rule pretty much everything else out.In reply to: Is bp dying a slow death? No harm done and I think we all feel better after a little conversation.
In reply to: custom plugin : hook bp_setup_globals is not firedOn top of everyone’s ideas, be sure to check out how to correctly attach your plugin to bp_init:
https://codex.buddypress.org/how-to-guides/make-your-plugin-buddypress-aware-v1-2/Because of the way that WordPress loads plugins, its possible that bp_init is firing before your plugin has added the hook. If that’s the case, your function is safe to run and needs to be called directly as a fall-back.
In reply to: profile fields private per fieldYes but it modifies the xprofile database table so you will want to take care when using it. I believe it’s simply titled “XProfile Privacy”
In reply to: Not enough rights to manage plug-insAnything that says something close to:
define( 'NONCE_SALT', 'unique phrase goes here' );There will be a few places it will appear all one after the other. Your best bet would be to visit the Salt Generator and use those, as they are totally randomized and guaranteed to be unique.
In reply to: Friends and Groups not workingI’ll need to look at this specifically for you this weekend.
@andrea_r is right. There is a manual edit you’ll need to make to your .htaccess file after upgrading to 3.0. Wp-content/blogs.php to wp-includes/ms-sites.php I believe? Not at my computer at the moment to say for sure.
In reply to: Not enough rights to manage plug-insAre you using a language other than English, and have you adjusted all of the default WordPress security keys and salts in your wp-config.php file?
This is a known issue that is becoming more widespread but does not have an immediate solution yet.
In reply to: Forum Posts Not Showing UpCan someone post this as a bug in the trac for 1.2.5 milestone please? I’ll be sure to get it fixed in the next release.
In reply to: Forum threads not created…Odd. Can you confirm the settings in your bb-config.php match your DB settings, etc…
Can you reply to existing topics? Or just cannot create new ones? Does this happen for all groups?
In reply to: Is bp dying a slow death?Haha

Good points both of you. I for one will make a better effort to peek around the forums more in the coming days. There are plans and ideas to “fix” BuddyPress.org to bring back the functionality you’re used to, so bear with it for now and know that things will improve.
In reply to: Is bp dying a slow death? For those of you that want to directly influence the future of BuddyPress, http://trac.buddypress.org. Make it your friend. Learn it. Love it. Live it. Give it a hug everyday and patch a bug.
The Trac is where you can post code snippets, or giant mega patches of code that you think should be integrated into BuddyPress. You can see the timeline of when people have done what, and see the outstanding bugs that need squashing before we can safely release the next version. The more bugs you fix, the more code you contribute, the more you are directly involved not only in the community, but directly in the future of the platform as a whole.
As incentive to help out, if your goal is to be a developer and make a career out of BuddyPress, consider walking into a meeting with a possible client, and when they ask what your level of involvement is with WordPress or BuddyPress, and you can respond with “I make it,” your chances of securing that client are pretty good. In order to help make BuddyPress, you have to actually help us make it, and you do that via the Trac. I can say this, because that’s how I did it with both WordPress and BuddyPress, and I’m down to help you guys do it too.

There are plenty of people that are highly active in the Trac that aren’t so much so in the forums, and vice versa. Since we moved BuddyPress.org over to 1.2, both Andy and myself have been busy with our own assignments that yes, do involve BuddyPress, but also involve other neat things like the WordPress.com “Like” feature and planning some neat things for a WordCamp.org redesign.
Truth be told, if /anyone/ is concerned about where I am or what I’m doing in regards to BuddyPress or the future of the project, there are at least 10 methods to contact me directly and I am totally happy and not annoyed by anything that has to do with BuddyPress. Drop me a line, let’s chat
http://en.gravatar.com/johnjamesjacobyTo answer a few of the questions/comments/statements in this topic: Private Messages are turned off because spam bots have started targeting BuddyPress installations and we were getting hit pretty hard after we upgraded the site. Raise your hand if you got a PM from someone claiming to love you enough to help you with male enhancement. Regarding my absence in the forums, I’ve really just taken on too many clients and haven’t had the time to look backwards at support AND forwards at development at the same time. It won’t always be that way, but it has been lately and I like it about as much as you all seem to too. I love being in the forums and helping people out, and I’m sad I haven’t been able too recently.
Andy is the figure head of BuddyPress and serves as the guiding light of the project similar to how Matt does for WordPress and bbPress, but there is no shortage of capable people in the BuddyPress community that could take this project by the horns and make it their own at any point. I know I’m not Andy, but if I can pretend to be to help anyone when he’s not around, ping me.

Along the lines of what @matt said, I love using @nacin as an example. He stormed into the WordPress Trac and started contributing code and patching bugs. Some were great, and some were rubbish, but he learned as he contributed and within 1 calendar year he has merited his way into being a core committer for WordPress, and contributed something insane; like 60% or more of the commits on the WP3.0 branch are his doing or somehow as a result of his hard work and commitment to the project. While there is only one @nacin, there is plenty of room for any one of you to be very @nacin like.
By the way, if there is an election and I’m voted out, I’m not leaving without a fight.
You’ll have to chase me out of town with torches and pitchforks.
In reply to: Is bp dying a slow death? No need to worry. All is well.
I can assure you BuddyPress is 100% not abandoned. My excuses are more client work than I can handle, and building lots of core API’s to make extending BuddyPress /much/ easier in 1.3. Custom post types in WordPress 3.0 have me sidetracked also

I’ll post something up in the blog with some official updates and words to address this topic in better detail.
This is fixed in the 1.2 branch of code and will be fixed in 1.2.5.
In reply to: Avatar uploading to wrong folderAs an update, I’m working on fixing this for all installs this week.
In reply to: Group Member Count Showing Users Already DeletedIn reply to: WP Multi NetworkYou’re welcome

I’ll be revisiting this plugin soon after 3.0 drops.
In reply to: WordCamp ChicagoI am.
In reply to: WordPress 3.0 new content typesBP would benefit from some table reduction.
Andy and I talked at WordCamp San Fran about how some components would benefit greatly from using the posts table, like Private Messages and Groups. Other components like XProfile would be more tricky and may not see any performance improvements, but would still be doable similar to the WP3.0 Menus.
So, it’s a likely direction, but don’t quote me yet.
In reply to: Is BuddyPress always SLOW or just on this site?BuddyPress is very fast on most platforms; it is only this morning that the server this site is running on is experiencing some issues.
http://testbp.org is a better representation of what to expect after installing and turning on BuddyPress.
