    If you don’t mind using sub-directories for WPMU, I’ve had pretty good luck using 1and1 so far. Had to hack .htaccess and force some extra memory in my php.ini file, but so far so good.

    On my RC1 install, I experienced a similar issue. My blog install couldn’t find me, and I knew I existed (philosophy reference.)

    I’m currently migrating a few sites over to the almost RC2 version, so I’ll know more about how this is working soon.

    For the record, I would put Andy’s code in bp-custom.php, located in the root of your BuddyPress install.

    Which version of BuddyPress are you using?

    By backend menus for WP, do you mean you want to totally remove access to the wp-admin area?

    This has been a common request by others as well, especially if you have blogs turned off and are trying to hide it completely for subscribers.

    If you’re saying that each member still has a blog, but you want them to be able to create new blog posts and manage their blogs through the buddypress interface, that still is not a possibility, and would require an additional plugin (in my opinion) that does not yet (and may never) exist with BP…

    It is possible to setup default widgets for blogs, it’s a little tricky though. Also, in order to setup a default member blog, I’ve found the best way to do that is to only give them one option and only have one theme turned on the Site-Admin->Themes area. There may be a way to force a default theme, but I’ve never attempted it yet.

    Let me try and answer this diplomatically because this seems like spam without being spam to me…

    BuddyPress isn’t Facebook, and it really doesn’t have any intentions of trying to imitate it. That’s up to an audience of GPL contributors to try and mold and shape it into that, if they so choose.

    BuddyPress also has a test development site already, to flex its muscles and allow people to use it as they like. testbp.org.

    There are unlimited domains available, with unlimited hosting and bandwidth options. None of what you’re offering really has anything to do with BuddyPress other than using it for potential profit. Contributing a domain that specializes in spreading bad news isn’t any part of Automattic’s roadmap that I’ve seen, so don’t count on getting any hosting.

    If what you’re doing is offering a business opportunity to specific individuals, you should contact them privately and see if they’re interested.

    (I’m locking this for now. If any other staff feels like re-opening it for discussion, go for it. My gut tells me this isn’t what the forums here are for.)

    This is the greatest challenge of all.

    Read the integration tutorial at this website.

    Read it again. Read it again. Read it again.

    Follow all steps, exactly.

    Use Firefox and check the cookies that are being placed when you login to BuddyPress. Chances are that you skipped a step somewhere, or that one of your cookies or plugins is out of alignment.

    It is possible and they can play nice together. :)

    Here is what I would do… And what I do mostly on all of my BuddyPress installations…

    In your BuddyPress->General Settings, make the “Full Name field name” be called “Display Name” or in your case “First Name/Last Initial”

    That way, people know right away what you want shown there. You won’t need to baby sit them because it says right there what you want entered. Most people will follow suit, and the ones that don’t, what’s the diff?

    (Notice I use my middle name here on bp.org?) ;)

    Then, create extra fields for First Name and Last Name, for yourself to use. Make them visible if you’d like, or whatever.

    This way you’re not trying to create a crazy filter to micro manage anything.

    It’s neither actually anymore.

    It involves “deep integration” on the bbPress side, including WordPress/BuddyPress inside bbPress, and then making a new theme for bbPress that matches. :)

    Trent and I are working on a comprehensive walk-through on how to do this soon.

    @johnjamesjacoby

    @thebigk, it will be handled by the migration script.

    It sounds to me like a bot is hitting your registration hard, and keeps attempting to refresh a page or is getting stuck on the creation reload or activation email, and is overloading the server with requests.

    It’s kinda one of those situations now, where all those plugins start to muck up our ability to figure out if this is BP’s fault or not. Usually the recommended plan of attack is to disable all plugins now, try to create a test user yourself, and see what happens.

    Even if you upgrade to the most recent trunk, and a bot or an unruly plugin are to blame, rather than creating tons of new tables, you’re still getting the overload of requests which is causing all sorts of havoc.

    Are you using RC1 or trunk version of BP?

    This was a problem with RC1, should be fixed in trunk.

    Burt, I need to read what you say more thoroughly haha. :X

    @johnjamesjacoby

    Keymaster

    Actually, I’ve had the exact same problem myself.

    Are you using a custom theme by chance? I think it has something to do with having a parent container element be less than 100% width. But then again Andy has it working fine here, so I’m not really sure.

    @johnjamesjacoby

    Keymaster

    I would say it would be in your best interests to get used to how the new versions of wpmu and buddypress work together, if what you want is to stay on top of the most recent bug fixes, etc…

    Upgrading from RC1 is going to open a whole new set of questions though, as it’s not a super easy thing to do.

    Andy’s mentioned that he will release some of his tricks eventually, but for now his main focus is readying BP for the 1.0 release.

    You can piece a lot of this theme apart by staring at the CSS for a while. (It’s mostly just a lot of background images.)

    Good call Jeff, didn’t see that there, and the permalink is turned off so that explains why the URL I tried didn’t work. :)

    What are you trying to style? Looks like you could use some list-style: none; in a few places to me…

    You’ve also got some gummed up mark-up, because you have

    <li>‘s without

    <ul>‘s…

    I’d recommend firefox and firebug and to spend some more time staring at your source. :)

    If I was going to use WordPress and bbPress as past examples, no, and don’t bet that it will be anytime soon.

    Someone may make a replica, but usually the *Press public themes aren’t available for public use.

    @johnjamesjacoby

    Keymaster

    It can be changed by changing the ‘BP_HOME_BLOG_SLUG’ variable to whatever you would like, but it cannot be totally removed. You could do that in your wp-config.php file, or probably even in plugins/buddypress/bp-custom.php also.

    You could essentially hide it by never linking to it within your templates too.

    In reply to: Pagination function

    @johnjamesjacoby

    Where exactly are you talking about?

    @johnjamesjacoby

    Keymaster

    The only potential draw back with that method Erwin, is that it adds the link at the end of the assembled navigation instead of giving you total control over it.

    Something to think about, is that BuddyPress really does allow for per-theme blog setups.

    The difference between:

    http://delsolownersclub.com/

    and

    http://delsolownersclub.com/news/

    and

    http://delsolownersclub.com/mafdark/

    Are all just smoke and mirrors with different themes.

    You could really make any ‘blog’ of your website do whatever you want it to do, just like how the BuddyPress Codex is really just another blog. ;)

    The only way to do this, is with “deep integration.”

    You will want to scour the bbpress.org forums for some more information about how to do this.

    I’m going to assist Trent in including deep integration as part of his revised integration write-up that’s coming next. BuddyPress.org uses deep integration, but it’s still tricky and still has pro’s and con’s, particularly on a shared host and also with xmlrpc requests.

    By the time that bbpress turns 1.0, most of the integration issues should be resolved, but you’re still loading ALL of WordPress + bbPress to make things go.

    @johnjamesjacoby

    Keymaster

    This is possible through some template trickery. Haven’t done it myself yet, and it would require an additional query per blog in the list you’re displaying (unless you make your own function to add the join in the original query.)

    I keep thinking of doing this, but the question is what to do when there is more than one blog author, and what to do for community blogs, etc…
