    Andy is definitely right on this one…

    You might want to make sure you’re uploading the files to the right places, and try deleting your browser cache for good measure.

    I would copy the entire bp_get_nav function except the final part where it adds the logout link, and make your own function called bp_get_nav_no_logout, and put that function in your bp-custom.php file.

    This way you can modify the member theme instead of the core files.

    Take this a step further and make your own member theme, that way you’re not modifying the stock member theme either.

    If you feel like this is something you’d like to have more control over in the future, add it to the trac as a feature enhancement. I could see being able to hook into those functions or modify their behavior as having its benefits.

    I typically use it as a blog for the purpose of the website itself. A place to talk about the whole community. Then I make my own blog that I use to blog about myself inside the website, sort of as a guide for other users to follow.

    I also tend to create a different custom theme for the main blog that other users cannot use. It helps to visually separate itself as something maybe a bit more important and website specific than the others.

    You need to create that file yourself. bp-custom.php is a file that BuddyPress looks for, kind of as a helper file to allow anyone to modify BP without needing to hack the core files.

    The function that Andy wrote for you will give you the information you need to create a plugin or widget for yourself. He’s teaching you to fish, basically… :)

    Download the ZIP directly do your hard drive, and then use your favorite FTP program to upload its files to your wp-content/mu-plugins directory.

    Then follow the instructions:

    https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wordpress-mu-sitewide-tags/other_notes/

    @johnjamesjacoby

    Re-read the instructions and try again? It sounds to me like some files aren’t in the correct spots or that some files were corrupted in the upload process.

    To address your specific issues:

    1.) The BuddyPress admin bar includes the link to your #2 question, but if you want to remove it from the front-end, you would have to check the defined('IN_ADMIN') variable and only load the buddybar if so. Could probably make a filter for this in functions.php, but I’m not in front of the source to give you a turn-key solution at the moment.

    2.) The link is part of the buddybar. :) Otherwise you can type it in the address bar yourself or customize the theme to fit the way you want it to perform. Aside from that, none of the WPMU themes will know how to redirect you to any specific blog admin area aside from their own, and they wouldn’t know which other blogs you have access to. That’s what the BuddyBar is fore. (Note to self: It would be cool to have a link to the admin area of each blog when viewing /blogs/my-blogs.)

    3.) Are you using a vanilla install with the vanilla theme? Vanilla meaning included… If so, do you have a link to your website so that I can see what’s happening?

    Remember guys (and I realize this is no excuse) but neither BuddyPress nor bbPress are even 1.0 yet. As soon as function calls and display functions are finalized and tweaked for a stable 1.0 release, you’ll see tons of themes and templates and frameworks.

    The opportunity currently exists for anyone with the time and motivation to swoop in and start blasting out themes for both platforms, but they would do it knowing that they may have to go back and redo some things after 1.0 is out.

    I think right now everyone is waiting for the ball to drop, because no one wants to do the same work twice. I’d love to release my bbPress theme, but I have 0 time to answer questions about it or support it, and that’s not fair to anyone either.

    Make sense?

    For fun? :D

    It’s a fix that you’re going to want to keep in the back of your mind, knowing that it will probably become part of the core and something you will never have to think about again.

    A lot of this comes down to your budget, so you’re going to get a wide array of answers here.

    You’re going to need at least php5, and to do subdomains you’ll need to be able to see if they allow you to add a wildcard for that too.

    Currently I use 1and1 for most of what I do, but I have to use subdirectories because they don’t allow for wildcarding like that. I also need to force php5 in my .htaccess files because they default to using php4. Blech…

    But, so far nothing has ever crashed, I’ve never lost any data, and their prices are relatively cheap compared to some other shared hosts…

    This is one of those questions where everyone is bound to give you a different answer, so be prepared to either get a wide variety of responses, or none at all. :D

    Brian, the file itself is in bp-core/css/admin-bar.css, but like Jeffca mentioned you can also make a site-wide.css file, and place it in your currently active home theme\’s /css directory, and it will work everywhere within your site, even inside the member theme.

    That way you\’re only editing one file, and it\’s on your own terms.

    I’ve added my fix to a trac ticket so it will get reviewed and possibly fixed in the core for future updates. The goal with all of this is NOT to edit or hack the core, but to have the core be as universally compliant as possible, and still allow for customization later.

    That could be the case, and may make more sense. In three BuddyPress installs and one test environment, I have yet to experience any avatar issues other than jumpy selection rectangles, which isn’t a BuddyPress issue as much as it’s an avatar javascript code/css positioning issue.

    If you can duplicate the issue like you’ve described and keep a log of the steps you’ve taken to do so, (size of file uploaded, type of file [jpg|png|gif], new user/group, update user/group, etc) that would be awesome and would help us see more specifically what (if anything) needs tweaking.

    Once we’re at that point, we take that info and add it to the trac as a ticket to say we’ve found the problem and here is how to recreate it.

    Works for me too. My only feedback would be that the logic behind when the notification on the site goes away seems to be one click behind. When I click on the notification from the menu bar, it takes me to my inbox, and not the new message itself.

    If I have many PM’s then the new message might be on page two, but the notification link doesn’t take me there.

    Once I am viewing the new message, the notification is still present. Then when I reply to the new message, because it is an ajax reply, the notification still exists. Once I navigate away from that message, the notification is cleared.

    In my opinion, the message should be cleared once I initiate the page load of reading that new message, rather than after I’ve read it. If that makes sense?

    It’s the BuddyPress Slash Attack of 2009. Andy is a sophisticated slash eliminating cyborg sent from the future to rid our support forums of quirky slash creating filters.

    It’s actually quite exiting! :D

    In reply to: Avatar issues

    @johnjamesjacoby

    My guess is that you were able to get that avatar back, or that they uploaded a new one, because it appears to me that they have an avatar now.

    I haven’t looked into the specifics of what happens to an avatar once it has been uploaded, but what John S. Server Support is saying is that the anonymous user that is responsible for uploading an image to that directory on your server doesn’t have permission or that BuddyPress isn’t properly listening to the permissions of that directory.

    I’m not sure how this is possible because BuddyPress does work for so many individuals in so many different situations. Running a directory permissions reset in a chronjob doesn’t really seem like a fix as much as it is a patch to an existing problem, because if it was working correctly it wouldn’t need a chron to go back and check its work.

    To reiterate, you said what is happening is that the image gets uploaded, it’s physically on the server and visible in their profiles, and then out of no where the file just disappears out of the folder?

    Burt: Something to note too… This could be the same way the bbGroups plugin works and the way it pulls all user data? Similar issue we ran into before? Mayhaps?

    My guess is that the xmlrpc memory limit is set on the server and probably needs to be overridden in .htaccess. If I was going to guess, which I’m not… :D

    If you\’re talking about your #nav, then in:

    http://gigbuddy.org/wp-content/themes/gigbuddy-home/css/base.css

    Line 97

    The below will sit it lower and mostly match your sites margins. I think that looks the best to me.

    Change your margin to:

    margin: 120px 0 15px;

    Design wise you will then still have rounded corners to worry about:

    http://gigbuddy.org/wp-content/themes/gigbuddy-home/css/base.css

    Line 105

    Change accordingly:

    -moz-border-radius-bottomleft:0;
    -moz-border-radius-bottomright:0;
    -moz-border-radius-topleft:3px;
    -moz-border-radius-topright:3px;

    Regarding the width of the nav, Are you saying that you want each one of the links to be a fixed width? To stretch them all across the 900px page width?

    @johnjamesjacoby

    Keymaster

    Possible that something is just being stubborn here.

    Member-theme is fine, searching for groups and members is fine, member profiles are fine, but viewing specific groups are not.

    According to firebug, Andy is right and your structure.css file is missing.

    I would say more mysterious, the optionsbar.php and userbar.php are also missing. This leads me to believe the TEMPLATEPATH variable is also getting the wrong idea as to where it’s at maybe when viewing a group profile?

    @johnjamesjacoby

    From the trac ticket comes a fix for the masses…

    In admin-bar.css, at line 55, under…

    #wp-admin-bar ul { /* all lists */

    REMOVE…

    height: 30px !important;

    ALTERNATIVELY REPLACE WITH… (might be needed to keep ie6 happy?)

    height: auto !important;

    The problem with setting the UL height to a set amout is obvious once you see it… Moving the mouse beyond the 30px point confuses the CSS, because the LI’s an A’s are outside the bounding area of the UL. Move the mouse 31px down, and the suckerfish JS fights the CSS to eventually say “remove sfhover” and the menu disappears.

    In reply to: Drop down menu

    @johnjamesjacoby

    The problem seems to come from the 1px spacing that is between the anchor elements. Once the mouse hits the LI or the UL, the hover on the A is lost and the menu disappears. I have a fix, but I’m not on my laptop to post it at the moment. I will have a solution this evening.

    What you’re using is RC-1. There’s nothing wrong with that, because it is the most stable official pre-release version, but this was noted as fixed in the trunk.

    I am of the opinion that this still needs some minor tweaking, but I want to come up with a viable solution before I submit a fix.

    Bob… Man… I’ll be happy to take a better look at this with you tomorrow in more detail… This is one of difficult demons to track down, as deep integration does introduce a WHOLE lot more functions into play than either program really plans for…

    It’s possible to do, but there’s a few steps I’ll need to walk you through that I don’t have the time for at this moment. But, we should be able to get it working.
