Looking good — works on refresh of forums listing page, same user.

Now to dive into the code. I’m going to go for minimalism in the UI — no icon, just a CSS class manipulation to make it an a:link rather than an a:visited in appearance, I think, and maybe a small ‘X Posts Since Last Visit’ with a count, if possible.

    Nice work!

    Amen, brother.

Question: is this on a per-user basis? In other words, can I log out as admin, log in as a test-user, and expect to see new posts made as admin correctly flagged as new using the same browser?

It doesn’t matter too much either way, that I can see, just verifying…

    I’ll try again later, thanks.

I deleted the user’s link in question because ouch, so I can’t check, but as I recall it was indeed 200Kb+, and it was hosted on the remote server. I have no idea how the user did it. They might have created the link in the 0.3 version… were the filesize checks already in effect then?

I just noticed that one of my users created a link, and used one of the two ‘thumbnails’ offered as avatars (I’m still very hazy on how that UI for choosing avatars is intended to work), and the one he chose was a 200+ kb png file. Because I had the Links widget in the sidebar, every pageload was pulling in a 200Kb file resized in HTML down to a 20×20 icon.

    Ouch.

I wonder if some logic might be built in to that thumbnail thingy to keep the images it offers under a reasonable filesize…

    Hey rich

Tried out the activity-stream-comments inline in threads — very very nice. I’d actually disabled comments in the Activity stream on forum posts, because it fragmented conversation, but this brings it back together.

One note: in bp-forum-extras-activity.php on line 74, I added a new class post-list-activity (looks like it was just an oversight in coding, because there’s just a naked ‘class’ in there now)

    <li id="activity-<?php bp_the_topic_post_id() ?>" class="post-list-activity">

so I could style the activity item specific to the forum, a little different from the way it appears in the Activity stream itself.

Just a heads up if you want to roll that into the next update (with whatever class name you see fit)…

Thanks again for these — really great stuff.

No joy so far. Showing icons all the time, visited or not… will continue to mess around.

Thanks, 3sixty! Exactly what my users have been asking for — will implement and test ASAP. (The ‘mark all read’ will be a major Good Thing too.)

Stwc, I actually rewrote Posts Since Last Visit to use the database instead of cookies. I haven’t turned it into a plugin yet but I have code and it does seem to work. Let me know if you want to test.

I absolutely do! Send me a PM and I’ll give you my email address, if that’s how you’d like to do it, with thanks (or just point me to a thread). ;-)

    Sorry, solved.

When you solve a problem, it would be nice for you to outline how, for the benefit of others using this forum in future.

My trac ticket got a reply that it is intended behaviour, so I don’t think we’ll be seeing a change in core.

Thanks, Sven. That’s actually the one thing I really wanted — my users made requests for forums thread titles first — and so if you can fix it up, I’d much appreciate!

    Wishlist? Sounds familiar!

I’d like to have user’s last visit to forum threads saved in the database, so thread views and last comment-in-thread views would be independant of the computer or device they use to view the forums, and they can hop from computer to computer seamlessly when using the site.

I’d like a User Awards plugin, where the admin can award users for “X of The Week” or whatever. Maybe allow current user to choose the next one as an option. Award holders get a small overlay of a star or trophy or something on their avatar.

I’d like to have a Vanilla-like ‘whispers’ system in forum threads where users can direct a comment, inline in the thread, to another user (or users), and it’s only viewable by the recipient.

That’s all that comes to mind right this minute…

I’m personally having an issue with SEO for Buddypress — reported it here (http://sven-lehnert.de/en/2009/04/29/buddypress-plugin-seo-for-buddypress/) — where %%forumtopictitle%% brings back the most recent forum thread commented in rather than the thread currently being viewed.

It’s a known issue that @username works but @user-name does not. Not sure if that’s the problem you’re having.

    I mentioned it here: https://buddypress.org/forums/topic/allowing-users-to-type-in-uppercase-letters-for-the-username#post-47196

Nice to see some forward movement on this. Going to wait for something that’s a bit more fully-baked, I think, though. ;-)

Wow. I considered Ning briefly, but didn’t want to have all my users’ content locked up in a third-party system. Glad I didn’t pursue it.

maybe i’ll try and make it insert BBCode

Should be easy to do — just edit the quicktags.js to spit out BBcodes rather than HTML where appropriate. It’s pretty simple to figure out where to fiddle.

@stwc Profile sharing is a way to “copy” someone else’s link into your own link list. Let me know if you have any ideas on how to make that more obvious.

Ah, OK. Maybe just a change of wording then, or hide that My Profile radio button if I’m the link creator?

    @stwc

Oh, and although every developer I’ve ever known has hated doing it, one of the single most important things for the whole project would be a comprehensive documentation project, well organized, with code samples and snippets.

Not going to hold my breath on that one, in part because I suppose it might feel like wasted effort to some extent until BP is fully mature (it’s getting close, though, I think).

Everything seems to work perfectly so far.

Not sure why when I Share –> Share this link in My Profile, it returns an error div with ‘Sharing a link with yourself is not allowed.’

Am I misunderstanding what that Share link is for in that context? (Makes perfect sense to me in adding it to a Group, though.)

“Social networking” means community to me.

Yeah, like I said, I may be making a distinction without a difference for many people. I reckon there is one, though.

MrMaz: I’m still on vacation, but heared that you are now part of the buddypress-dev team!

Hey, congrats! I had no idea, either.

Also, will test the new version ASAP, with thanks!

    Great thread, Mr Maz.

For my part, I am very very leery of the phrase of the moment, ‘social networking’. It’s a buzzphrase, and even when it’s used specifically and accurately, it makes me want to punch throats, a little bit, because it doesn’t mean much when you dig right into it, and to me, it evokes cheesy cheap-suited salesman making currency of faux friendship.

But I’m kinda old skool that way. ;-)

For those of us — most, probably — who’ve been working or at least dabbling in the data for decades, we’ve seen dozens of bandwagons boarded and polluted and just as quickly disembarked and abandoned when the next thing came along. The avalanche of ‘social networking gurus’ and all the rest will fade in time, too.

For me, the real thing at the highest handwavy level is ‘community’ and more specifically, community on the web. Tools and toolsets and platforms and apps and APIs and all the loosely- and tightly-coupled stuff that enables people who share some set of interests, no matter how specific or broad, to get together and interact and form communities, with all the real-world parallels but also all the special because-it’s-on-the-internet factors rolled in.

This means a couple of things, and again, talking at a much higher level than the technical here — it means that the platform itself disappears for the user after they become accustomed to it. That it’s designed in terms of interface and functionality to not only provide the features users want, even if they don’t know it, but also to be as invisible as possible as they use it.

It also means that the platform has to have a robust set of tools for the administrator and moderators of the community (because these things are necessary, to some extent, in community on the web) to use a light hand in keeping the community on an even keel.

I think web community, more perhaps for people who are not so much of the disposable, in-the-moment, ritalin-riddled, post-it-and-forget it generation, needs to have feet solidly planted in not only the ongoing ephemeral stream of conversation, but also in a more long-term, permanent ‘space’ of shared history, shared interactions that are performed in public and can be gone back to, interactions that more than any set of xprofile fields or avatars build a mutual understanding between users based on personality and past discussion. Build, in other words, community.

This last is why I keep mentioning how important I believe the forum component of Buddypress to be, and why I’ve spent the bulk of my time on my current not-yet-launched BP site for an existing community trying to beef it up (with the help of some of the excellent plugins that people have been releasing).

‘Social networking’ doesn’t excite me. Communities of people from all over the place, communities that can only exist because they are on the internet, that’s what excites me. Buddypress, to me, is a toolset for building communities on the web. It may be a distinction without a difference for many, but I think it’s an important one.

    OK, enough handwaving.
