Announcing: Events component
-
Tomorrow, the first version of my bp_events component will be available from my website (http://www.erwingerrits.com/?page_id=799).
This component will allow your users to create (recurring) events, with optional forum and wire, to which friends can be invited. Friends can either: attend, maybe attend or not attend, much like Facebook’s Events. There will be a ‘Send a Reminder’ option as well.
The component includes an “Events” widget that lists the upcoming (default), newest, active or popular events.
You can keep up to date on the development, and add comments with suggestions or bug reports on my website, or on this thread.

widget-events.css from bp-events is being loaded by other themes in wp-content/themes directory. It should be fixed not to affect other themes.
At this moment, by loading this css it doesn’t break other themes, but since other themes are not using any functions of bp-events by default, this css hook must be removed.
@ Erwin
[blockquote]It just sounds your database is out of sync with the plugin code. [/blockquote]
That was it. I deactivated the plugin V .56, deleted all bp-events tables manually, activated the plugin again and now it works like a charm. Thank you!
It would be great to have an option for setting events permalink structures. WordPress can’t afford to display non English permalinks (slugs) that are long unlike Amazon. So for example, I need to use event ID rather than event titles.
We keep testing and liking the bp-events. Some questions arose, though:
Is there a way to show the ending time of an event only when it is set? ( For a workshop knowing the end makes sense, for a party it could be the killer )
How can we turn off birthdays being transformed into events automatically?
Zeitweise – automatic birthday event creation when not set in the back end has been fixed for v. 0.57. I will try to work on some “non-end time” options.
This plugin is not working with BuddyPress 1.0. It’s not activating, because of:
Fatal error: Cannot redeclare events_install() (previously declared in /hsphere/local/home/slaffik/demo.cosydale.com/wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-events.php:39) in /hsphere/local/home/slaffik/demo.cosydale.com/wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-events.php on line 177
Oh did I do smth wrong?
WPMU 2.7.1
BP RC2
BP-EVENTS .57
I already had created an \”age\” profile field before installing this plugin.
if the user enters their birthday i.e. 1/2/1983
a birthday event is auto-created (very cool)
but all the birthdays are listed as December 31st, 1969
in the back-end, under the events settings, the dropdown box for
\”Select the \”date selector\” profile field you want to use for the birthday and it will be replaced with an event birthday field\”
the dropdown is blank…. and I cannot select anything.
if I activate birthday field, the \”age\” field I previously created becomes the birthday field… but the birth date is always the same… december 31st 1969
also, if the user creates a regular event, and invites friends, the \”May Attemd\” link in the friends notifications will return a 404 not found…
– if they visit the event itslef and click “may attend” it functions correctly
any thoughts?
@Erwin how soon do you think .58 will be ready? I’m really looking forward to this plugin becoming available for buddybress 1.0. Also, does anyone know if the current twitter plugin works with buddypress 1.0?
J-tho: version 0.58 is out and works with BP 1.0… Read the Readme file though, I made some changes to where the files go… It also adds language functions and fixes a group-event group link that wasn’t working properly for a bit now ever since BP changed the group_permalink function.
Go to erwingerrits.com to get the latest version.
@Enlightenmental1 – you say you created an “age” field… is it of type “dateselector”? Only dateselector fields are listed in the drop down.
More people have mentioned the incorrect birthday (1969), but I have not been able to duplicate the error yet. I am aware of the problem, though.
@slaFFik–version 0.58 is working with version 1.0… The error you have sounds like you have two versions of bp-events installed… maybe one in buddypress dir and one in mu-plugins or something like that.
I’ve posted before, but is it possible to use postid than postname when creating events, hopefully with small hack?
Hi Erwin. I’ve just installed 0.58 on BP 1.0 and WPMU 2.7.1 and whenever I try to create an event I get the error message, “There was an error saving event details. Please try again.”
Any ideas?
After you uploaded the files, did you log in as administrator and go to the WP dashboard? This will install/upgrade the database. It sounds like you have an out-of-sync database… Did you upgrade from an earlier version?
@Socialpreneur – I will add a back-end option to either use ids or names for permalinks…
Hi Erwin Gerrits,
bp-events is great. I’m playing around with it, having a lot of fun!
Now I have one problem with the wire.
May you can help me to fix it. I use customizable slugs, and I think this breaks the wire in your plugin.
This ticket has a batch for buddypress.
Is this plug-in will under active development? I’m extending it at the moment, so am just wondering if there have been any updates to functionality since the initial releases.
@Jhuskisson, Extending with what features?
@Jhuskisson it looks like the plugin is still coming along. There is some discussion going on on the developer’s website:
I follow all the steps but I have this error:
Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 33554432 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 6 bytes) in /home/web/universita.ws/home/b/wp-admin/includes/template.php on line 2963
Hey – I’m somewhat of a noob with all this but fairly technically adept and have been doing OK. I have installed events via your directions and also uninstalled (deleted with the plugin delete utility) and installed again with the new “browser auto install of zip files” feature. It looks like all functionality is there except for when you go to Events on the pull down menu for the user – you get “Not Found / No Access The page you are looking for either does not exist, or you do not have the permissions to access it.” I’ve been poking through the files and didn’t see any in the mu-plugins directory but when I added the files as instructed, I got that big gnarly “cannot redeclare events” error message that was a few posts back..This is a killer plugin that I’m excited about..can you help? My environment is latest versions of wpmu and buddypress as installed in the last few days. I’m running a test environment with the “buddydress” theme that incorporates the same look and feel for wp and bp..thanks in advance for your help.
Thomas
@taebp, please download latest trunk… this issue has been fixed.
Hi Erwin
This is exactly what I’m experiencing. Just downloaded via the plugin install, Version 0.59
@carinalle – installation through the WP install doesn’t put the files in the right directories– please install manually as per the ReadMe file.
Hey Erwin–
Just wanted to shout out a thank you for developing this. I just dropped it in, starting playing with it and it works beautifully. Clean, simple, and intuitive. Well designed.
