“I would like to keep the home and blog slugs pointing to where they are, but fix the members and rest of the links to point to my root domain slugs.”
Then hardcode the full URL in the header above. No functions, just a web address. Easy. Works.
Again, take it up on the MU side.
Pretty sure Tasty Kitchen is on a nice beefed up dedicated box. Can’t remember where I read it though.
And it’s a general rule of thumb that only 10% of those registered users will be on your site at a time, on average.
In reply to: Buddypress themes, what first? You might wanna make the buddybook one a free theme, since currently there are no working free themes based off facebook.
In reply to: Performance problem 100% CPUthis help any?
http://www.hostgatorcouponcodex.com/blog/fix-memory-leak-with-whm-installed-on-rhel-and-centos/
A quick google found plenty of mentions of that memory leak.
In reply to: Buddypress Theme with WPTHEMEIt’s pretty much the process Simon describes.
In reply to: Buddymatic theme frameworkYeah, he knows. Ron, that is… (I’m married to him – he’s literally across the room from me right now
)He’d probably update his when 2.9 is about to be released for MU.
Not a BP issue. This is how MU handles the blog, and under My Blogs, it lists blog that you are just an *admin* of, not a member as well.
In reply to: Can I use Page Templates? for groups, members, etcIt’s a minor bug in MU. When you add a page template to a currently active theme, it can;t find it. Select a different theme, then immediately select the right theme again. Then when you go back to select a page template it shoudl be there.
You can ftp in and remove the BP plguin, AND you can also remove the BP theme…
Then the WP side should flip itself back to a default theme so you can get in.
Not any more….
There’s a list of freelancers here:
http://wpmututorials.com/freelancers/
They may not list BP specifically, but many on that list have worked with it quite extensively.
In reply to: Donations on BP.org, what do you think?+1 for donating monies to your favorite add-on plugin devs, or supporting their business models. BP is awesome, but without community developing all these add-ons, it would be half as far.
Some people have tried to do a Donate Friday. So, this Friday pick a plugin you use often and donate five bucks to the dev. take the ten minutes to poke aroudn their site and look for a donate link. If all else fails, find their email and paypal money to that.
In reply to: WPMUDEV Theme question for someone?Just a note to say that I tried looking at Atahualpa to modify it for use with Buddypress, and the code is an absolute nightmare to work with. And it’s a table-based layout.
Yes, it has a lots of options. But if you want to mod it, ugh… There’s loads of other themes out there with options pages.
edit: to answer your original question, in taking the navigation on the right, just move the code in the theme into a nav spot where you want in the header, and style it to go horizontally.
It’s not really BP specific, or even MU-specific. It’s all a matter of styling.
In reply to: Buddymatic theme framework“Is the benefit to buddymatic that it can support all of the themeatic child themes out there?”
Yes.

“I’m looking to do the same with Theme Hybrid and I’m sure the process is similar. “
He’s already done & submitted Theme Hybrid as a buddypress theme to the repo & we’re just waiting for it to be approved.
In reply to: Performance problem 100% CPUWithout being able to look and see multiple files both within the wordpress part and the server, the most we can do is guess.
Some things I have seen crank the CPU:
– a bad plugin with an off query
– bad code in the theme (make the theme more efficient, revert to default theme to see if that’s the issue)
– inappropriate server settings. Did you really put in a wildcard subdomain (if you use them) or do you have, say 20, listed. (Seen it. Wasn’t pretty.)
– default server settings on high traffic sites. Preforks, child processes – all these can be streamlined.
– an obscure bug with cPanel on CentOS boxes that create a memory leak
– in rare cases a hardware failure
and finally – being hit with spammers constantly. I have a couple older domains, and no matter where I host them, the simple fact they are “out there” mean they get hit with an INSANE amount of spam. Email, comments, splogs – all of it.
Basically, you have to eliminate what it isn’t.
how much traffic do you get? How big is the database?
In reply to: Is BuddyPress confusing to users?Remember, wordpress.tv has a TON of tutorial videos for beginners as well.
In reply to: Customizing the home page“Is hard coding the way to get the MAIN nav with CATEGORIES as links?”
No, it’s the exact same way as building a nav bar with pages in a WP theme. Except you use the categories list function.
Tip: start with buddymatic. Find one of the magazine-style Thematic skins and use that with it, changing the style.css so it uses buddymatic templates instead of thematic. I’d recommend Commune That will get you most of the way there, in maybe a half hour.
In reply to: Is BuddyPress confusing to users?Well…. the P2 Theme has already solved the “posting from the front end” issue.
I honestly have no idea why people haven’t been ripping that out and using it.
In reply to: Analytics kills Dashboard with Blank pageWhy not just do this:
http://wpmututorials.com/plugins/how-to-hook-into-the-footer/
You really don’t need to be BP-specific or this.
“1. Thumbnail generation did not work due to the classic blog.dir/blog-id/ with mu issue.”
That’s pretty much an easy fix at this point, if it’s timthumb.
In reply to: Help with Child ThemeAha! Yeah, tell it to look in the template_directory . that pulls the *activated* theme. Which shoudl be the child theme.
How are you calling it tho? If you’re making a relative link, then it’s looking relative to the child theme directory. And of course it’s not there.
In reply to: Where/how to download the latest bleeding edge beta?good to know.
Still getting familiar with the regulars.
Yeah David, it’s a link a lot of people miss.
In reply to: Where/how to download the latest bleeding edge beta?Guys, trac has a zip archive of everything. No need for learning svn if you’re just checking it out occasionally.
Bookmark this page:
https://trac.buddypress.org/browser/trunk
Scroll to the bottom where it says
“Download in other formats:
* Zip Archive”
Click on “zip archive”.
Plugin Manager is the one you want.
