In reply to: BP GroupBlog, P2 ready (with bugs)! Please review…
well I have made multiple attempts with multiple fresh installs (just wpmu/bp no other plugins but yours, and default theme). bp-groupblog 1.4.4 –not an upgrade started with 1.4.4, checked meta table and no issues there
Without exception on every install, I am able to create the first group without problems. Even if I choose to have bpgroups create the group for me, it does create it as a subdomain which is perfect.
However, I cannot create a group blog for any further groups on any install. Basically I end up with a bunch of server errors which I mentioned above when I click on the group ‘blog’ link. The group is created ok as is the group forum. It’s just the blog step that gets messed up.
I have no idea whatsoever where to go from here.
In reply to: BP GroupBlog, P2 ready (with bugs)! Please review…I’ve run into 2 issues with the current version.
1. When I create a group and decide to create a group blog at the same time, it only allows me to create domain.com/groupblogname instead of groupblogname.domain.com
This causes everything to break
2. If I create a subdomain blog prior to creating the group, and then choose an existing blog it ‘seems’ to work and goes through the install process.
however:
When I visit the group page and click on blog, the page ends after the header, and looking at the server error logs I see a bunch of the following:
PHP Catchable fatal error: Object of class WP_Error could not be converted to string in /wp-includes/wp-db.php on line 488Is that the error you are talking about having?
btw
It seems not to matter what I name the blog, so it’s not a naming conflict as far as I can tell. Basically I cannot create any new group blogs no matter what settings I try.
Here is a screenshot of the bp_groups table in the db. Notice all the blank rows
http://shawngaffney.anointed.net/files/2010/03/20100327_bpgroupstable.jpg
Every time I create a new group I end up with 2 new rows. I row is correct, and is always followed by a second blank row.
Also, there are no new entries created in any of the bb forums database tables.
**No other plugins activated during group creation, and also using default theme as a test. Basically a ‘virgin’ bp setup gone awry yet again..
I was able to create the first group with no problems, however since then I cannot create any new groups without these errors.
The only thing I can think of, is I created a group and deleted it, as I was not happy with the group name. since then all groups created are screwed up like this….. maybe something wrong in the delete group functions?
I’m sorry, I should have mentioned that I did try reverting the theme back to ‘stock’ but it has the same problem.
@andy — I know your a very busy guy, but if it helps to troubleshoot a possible issue, I can provide you with admin server/database access so you could dig around a bit. I’ll send a pm with info just in case. If your to busy, then obviously don’t worry about the pm.
Digging into the database I see something really weird going on when I try to create a group.
When I get to the avatar step I mentioned above, where there is no avatar to crop only the next/previous buttons, It shows the group as already created.
however:
in the database table wp_bp_groups it is creating 2 new rows when a group is created
1. shows the proper name/description/creation time etc..
2. there is another group id 1# higher than the created one, with no information in the db table and the date created shows all zero’s.
I can’t imagine it’s supposed to be doing this, creating 2 rows int he db, 1 being all blank.
Also I notice the the forums table is not being updated, so there is no new group forum being created.
Finally I tried to create a group with no forum associated, but still end up with the same problem. When I click on next, I get the following:

In reply to: Admin user management issuesPart of the problem is it’s also not very obvious that they are supposed to check their email.
Having that warning on the same page as crop the avatar makes no sense. Heck even I didn’t see the message up there.
Maybe having a separation between the avatar upload/crop and the message to check your email would help?
–make it it’s own page in the steps to registering?
Problem is my sitewide posts blog is the primary root blog. Can’t make that one private as that is the primary place users will visit.
In reply to: How to add users to the admin bar \'my blogs\'?bummer…
thanks for the info though, saves me from tearing things apart even worse. lol
In the meantime, is there a file or db table that I can alter to give my clients moderators access in the buddybar?
I don’t mind having to hardcode it if that will solve the problem temporarily.
In reply to: BP GroupBlog, P2 ready (with bugs)! Please review…I’ve had an ongoing problem with the blog page titles and article titles not showing up on the group blog homepage. It turns out it was a conflict with the events-manger plugin.
In the events-manager plugin file: dbem_events.php there is the following function which causes the issue. Now I don’t know why, or what the proper fix is, but by commenting out the filter on ‘the_title’ I was able to get the blog titles back.
I hope this helps someone in the future as this took me days to track down.
function dbem_events_page_title($data) {
$events_page_id = get_option ( 'dbem_events_page' );
$events_page = get_page ( $events_page_id );
$events_page_title = $events_page->post_title;
if (($data == $events_page_title) && (is_page ( $events_page_id ))) {
if (isset ( $_REQUEST ['calendar_day'] ) && $_REQUEST ['calendar_day'] != '') {
$date = dbem_sanitize_request($_REQUEST ['calendar_day']);
$events_N = dbem_events_count_for ( $date );
if ($events_N == 1) {
$events = dbem_get_events ( "", dbem_sanitize_request($_REQUEST ['calendar_day']));
$event = $events [0];
$stored_page_title_format = get_option ( 'dbem_event_page_title_format' );
$page_title = dbem_replace_placeholders ( $stored_page_title_format, $event );
return $page_title;
}
}
if (isset ( $_REQUEST ['location_id'] ) && $_REQUEST ['location_id'] |= '') {
$location = dbem_get_location ( dbem_sanitize_request($_REQUEST ['location_id']) );
$stored_page_title_format = get_option ( 'dbem_location_page_title_format' );
$page_title = dbem_replace_locations_placeholders ( $stored_page_title_format, $location );
return $page_title;
}
if (isset ( $_REQUEST ['event_id'] ) && $_REQUEST ['event_id'] != '') {
// single event page
$event_ID = dbem_sanitize_request($_REQUEST ['event_id']);
$event = dbem_get_event ( $event_ID );
$stored_page_title_format = get_option ( 'dbem_event_page_title_format' );
$page_title = dbem_replace_placeholders ( $stored_page_title_format, $event );
return $page_title;
} else {
// Multiple events page
$page_title = get_option ( 'dbem_events_page_title' );
return $page_title;
}
} else {
return $data;
}
}
// to make sure that in pages lists the title is dbem_events_page_title, and not overwritten by the previous filter
//add_filter ( 'the_title', 'dbem_events_page_title' );
add_filter ( 'single_post_title', 'dbem_events_page_title' );You can see that I commented out the second to last line.
So far it seems that the events plugin still works perfectly, as does the group blog plugin.
anyhow, hope it helps someone out.
In reply to: BP mark as spammers acts wierd in 1.2.2.1I’ve run into a similar problem but it’s not related to the emails not going through.
In testing, I have found that almost without exception, that no one pays attention to the text above the crop avatar to check their email for the validation.
The system takes the user to the crop avatar portion, which they do, but after submitting their new avatar, they are left on the same screen, with just a small text warning above the avatar to activate their account.
Actually, it even caught me off guard a few times, not realizing I needed to activate a new account.
Maybe in the future make this much more obvious?
In reply to: BP GroupBlog, P2 ready (with bugs)! Please review…I’ve been playing around on the beta site for some time now, and I have to say it’s quite impressive!
I was going to install the older beta version on my clients site and was curious if I do that, if there is a clear upgrade path to your new version or not. Or am I simply better off just waiting for the new vs?
In reply to: [New Plugin] BuddyPress Group Forum ExtrasThank you so much for this. The forum extra page works awesome on my setup and I am so happy. You have really outdone yourself on this one.
I do have one question. I made a post in a members only group forum, yet on the forum index page the new post does not show in the list of ‘fresh’ posts on the top. It does add to the counter in the group forum listing below though.
I would have expected the post to show up because I am logged in and a member of the private group, but to have it not visible to the public, or members who are not members of the group.
Is this a setting somewhere?
thanks
In reply to: Issue with default groups widgetThank you so much!
I tried bp_is_profile_component() as it looked like the most relevent. However it only shows the widget if on the users profile tab.
I was hoping to find something like bp_is_user() where it would work on any page dealing with the members information, ‘activity, profile, messages, friends, etc’.. Is there an undocumented filter for this?
In reply to: BP Album+ || New Features Requests and DiscussionAfter reading your stats on what it would take to use this plugin with a large community server wise, it got me thinking…
Is there a possibility you could tie this into the ‘members’ plugin from Justin, so that I could only allow a certain group to upload photos?
and then maybe even separate out the ability to upload video’s to another group?
While I have plenty of server horsepower, there is no way I could handle all of my 40k members doing this at the moment. I would definitely have to extend beyond my 2 server setup into some type of cloud to handle this, and that is going to take a bit of work and finances.
In reply to: Issue with default groups widgetwidget logic allows me to add a widget to the page and within each widget I can set variables like:
is_page(), is_single(), is_author(), !is_home()
So far I have not found one for bp. I have tried everything my brain can come up with like is_profile(), is_bp_profile(), etc…
I’m sure hoping there are functions ‘whatever they’re called’ that work with buddpress specific areas. Otherwise I will end up having to do a load of coding I was hoping to avoid.
In reply to: Issue with default groups widgetThank you, worked perfectly!
In case anyone else runs into this issue, here are the changes
bp-groups/bp-groups-widgets.php
line 29:
<?php if ( bp_has_groups( 'type=popular&per_page=' . $instance['max_groups'] . '&max=' . $instance['max_groups'] ) ) : ?>change to:
<?php if ( bp_has_groups( 'type=popular&user_id=""&per_page=' . $instance['max_groups'] . '&max=' . $instance['max_groups'] ) ) : ?>One last question:
I use widget_logic on my sidebars, what is the logic to say ‘is on members profile page’?
Basically I duplicated the groups widget, one with the user logic, and one without. I can use my modified version in the footer, and the old one in the sidebar. That way I can also show what groups the member belongs to.
I only want that widget to show up on buddypress profile pages. I just don’t see the logic statement anywhere.
In reply to: Sticky a group in the directory?++1
In reply to: BP GroupBlog, P2 ready (with bugs)! Please review…the upgrade looks fantastic. I registered and made a few test posts and it worked as advertised.
suggestions:
1. preview blog post before posting it — without visual editor, it’s hard for a regular user to know what the formatting around images is going to look like etc..
2. ability to edit the post after it’s posted. (I forgot to align the images I uploaded so it was looking bad). If there is an edit button, I just couldn’t find it.
In reply to: Group Blog for BP1.2 is now availableany news on the updated version?
also: I have spent days going through the code and still can’t figure out why ‘the_title’ is not showing up on the group blog page as noted above… very strange problem indeed.
Just downloaded and installed the latest version as of today. Like the user above all I can do is report back all the errors. (I have never been able to use this chat program, any version on any of my sites without errors). I have no other issues with any other aspect of the site, just the chat system.

In reply to: BuddyPress Mapscreated user on your test site and filled in the map information. Even after clicking save, I still see your map there from another country. (user name shawn)
also:
installed on my system and do not have the location button in my user profile navigation like on your site. Nor is there anywhere in the group admin to add a map.
I must be missing something really simple here.

notice that there is no title to the article nor is there anything in the ‘page’ icon.
I think ‘the_title’ is not passing through properly but it does pass through on the blog activity below the blog page.. very very strange, as it used to work, and nothing changed that I know of….
In reply to: [New Plugin] BuddyPress Group Forum ExtrasI am not sure how to enable display_errors, reporting.
I am running wpmu 2.9.1.1
One thing I did track down is that forum extras is conflicting with
https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/custom-field-template/
(other than bp probably the most important plugin I use and the best in it’s class) Allows me to easily create my own custom meta boxes on a per post_type basis.
In reply to: [New Plugin] BuddyPress Group Forum ExtrasI am using bp 1.2.1, hope to test and upgrade to 1.2.2 later today.
I installed and activated forum extras 1.5, and then turned on signatures. Went into bp admin and clicked enter for signatures so that the info was in the db.
The problem I have is then any bp related page is blank. What is really weird is there are no errors being reported on the server logs like normally happens with a white screen. I have checked all the server logs, php, general, etc…
This has been going on since forum extras 1.3. I had a white screen back then and did not try to upgrade or run forum extras again until just now.
I can provide server login info if needed for troubleshooting, although with no errors in the logs, not sure how much that would help.
It’s no emergency or anything as I was not really planning on utilizing the current forum extra tools, but was more waiting for your ‘multi’ forum plugin add on coming later.
