We need to update the widget as we should simply bail out if notice closed and not display markup if possible, also I want to add a filter to return false so the option is available to cancel the footer rendering even if widget not in use.

As mentioned please do check documentation, as we endeavour to provide guides to working with BP in this respect. On this particular point though in the impending release of 2.2 there will be now the capability to select named templates for the BP pages so you should be able to select a full width version of your themes page.php.

And have you checked your server error logs? or contacted your hosts? a 503 is a server error message alerting you to an issue with the server not necessarily BP so first port of call would be your logs then hosts tech support.
