In reply to: If BP is enable conditional tag
?
In reply to: How to customize Login and Logout pages ?Odd that that plugin doesn’t make clearer provision for the logo, however if it can specify a stylesheet then simply copy the WP ruleset and change the background call on the h1 a to your image and path?
If you want a very crude, rough and ready approach you could use this dropped into your themes functions.php, it’s not a particularly clever method though but works.
You could add a few other override rulesets to the embeded styles if you wished, but I would keep it simple otherwise a more formal approach would be better.
In reply to: Hey Paul Thanks For Proving My PointsAlan in fairness Paul locked the thread for the reason that it was coming across as simply confrontational, as was suggested writing in a less confrontational manner – those bullet points were somewhat closed statements – might engender a better response form people. I note your concerns and I have shared them too an extent but to actually try and keep things on track we have to try and be positive. At the moment long winded threads that just go round and round endlessly are not what the community needs – it’s not censorship just concern to keep a positive spin on things, raise issues by all means but lets try and have possible solutions at hand as well.
One last point worth considering; BP is a relatively young project and still finding it’s feet, I remember well how long WP actually took to become what you might consider mature and stable, certainly theming with WP was not a huge amount of fun for many years. BP is in many ways ahead of WP in those terms.
In reply to: Top 5 Reasons Why Buddypress May Fail
thanks mercime went off for the link but got distracted.12,000 members is a fairly large site and by the looks of things there is a fair amount of current activity.
In reply to: Top 5 Reasons Why Buddypress May FailNot sure I understand your last paragraph I don’t necessarily find your ‘Statements’ hostel yet they do come across as written by someone who is aggrieved in some fashion. Is the intent here to open debate? Recently there have been lengthy threads running on these points you raise and as much as I don’t intend to overly moderate this thread I also do not see a huge amount of value in it at this time. The project doesn’t attempt to stifle criticism as observed in recent threads, however telling moderators that they mustn’t moderate otherwise they ought not to be moderators is never going to go down well on any forum and is too an extent slightly hostile

There is a fair degree of concern over the direction and progression of BP and there are significant moves afoot to rectify this by the senior mod team and unofficial secondary tier of core developers.
1. It may feel that way and I have possibly felt this in the past but it’s not really true, healthy constructive criticism is welcomed and is taken on board.
2. Not sure of the point you are trying to make here? That BP isn’t able to handle large volume sites? I don’t think that’s true at all, BP will mature and you will see bigger sites starting to use it – case in point might be the ‘The Telegraph’ who now run a BP installation for their community and that does have a pretty large member base.
3. Developers are concerned very much with getting this site up and running fully and that is underway at this moment, please check out the BuddyPress Ninjas group, everyone is more than aware there are issues with the site at present and these are being rectified. As for the version of the site it Will run the current stable release as far as I’m aware.
4. And your point is? BP is run in the same fashion as WP. How independent do you expect it to be? Automattic back BP and employ the lead developer as for controlling BP I would say no more than they control WP. At the moment there is little interference from Automattic the project is headed by the two lead developers and a secondary team of equally experienced developers along with the larger community who all have access to Trac to help notify bugs found, add and test patches and move BP forward.
5. It is Open Source though! is not the GNU an open source license? Regardless this is what BP is released under and to open up discussions on this subject are just likely to go back and fourth debating an issue that is somewhat a moot point.
There is not a huge amount of value to be gained going over these points many of which have been covered recently, lets try and focus on positives and get the project moving forward at a healthy pace, direct our energies in a positive manner. I’m all for debate but think that we have had quite a bit recently and don’t really see a value in debating issues that may well be out of our control.
In reply to: Admin Bar is missing / dissapearedEdit / Too slow

That’s not a lot to go on Carl; were you you / have you been making any mods to your install? is the adminbar actually gone period or just misplaced through CSS edits? Is it still present in the markup source? You haven’t simply inadvertently set it to hidden for logged out users via the dashboard?In reply to: Singe WP or WP Mu??Given the option and with no impediments in the way you would always want to run the latest stable release of WP. WPMU is now effectively obsolete, and is merged into WP 3.0 thus WP 3.0 is the only WP that people will install after which they will decide whether they wish to run as a single blog (default) or to enable Multi Site mode.
I would install WP 3.0, at a later date if you want multi site then you can enable it (I am assuming that there are no issues enabling MS later having run BP for a while)
In reply to: OpenIDAnd what pray is Web 2.0 ?

Remember that the phrase ‘Web 2.0’ was coined as a joke, a satirical dig if you will; what was the bigger joke though was the number of people that thought it ‘A real thing’ and began using it as a buzz word.
As for OpenID it’s a good idea but don’t know if they’re any plans for it.
In reply to: How to Exclude a Group From the Groups LoopYou need ‘||’ ‘Or’ don’t you?
so you want to run code if it’s not the community group or not the general group etc?
if(bp_get_group_name() != ‘Community’ || bp_get_group_name() != ‘General’ ):
In reply to: If BP is enable conditional tagNo problem
In reply to: Buddypress followers pluginChange ‘loggedin_user’ to ‘displayed_user’
I was originally using displayed_user changed to loggedin_user but realised it wasn’t the result I wanted.
In reply to: Buddypress followers pluginCan you not use that function I posted up to help out? If not @nuprn1 will have an alternative and probably better approach.
In reply to: Buddypress followers plugin😆 I just tried

I did hesitate wondering if it was useful to have it in stats block in header as well as the nav items below. at the moment that little functions squirts followers/following directly beneath the stats output for me.
In reply to: Buddypress followers pluginI wanted something similar, this works for me (rich may have better take on it though also didn’t someone write a stats plugin
, seems these following items would sit nicely in that output?)Dropped into functions.php:
You’re going to need be a little more detailed in your explanation of what you’re trying to do, if people are going to be able to help out.
uploaded via the backend, media library type of thing or simply uploaded via ftp and dumped in some folder?
file linked to as ?
‘We’?
What about dropping them a line and asking? Events is such a problem area it seems, it’s still a shame that the events plugin that worked for BP 1.1 was never updated.In reply to: Admin Bar CSS — background colorLook through the rulesets for all instances where you see the background is stated as #333 these would need to change.
The reason the parent element retains an active state even though not being hovered is that scripting is used (classic suckerfish sfhover – used to provide hover on non anchor elements for IE <= 6) this adds a class of .sfhover to parent elements.
Around line ~117 there is a grouping of selectors, the ruleset adds a background to each of these selectors and it’s there you will need to make further mods – if necessary breaking apart the grouping if it’s not required that all those elements have the same background.
Ruleset looks like this:
#wp-admin-bar ul.main-nav li:hover, #wp-admin-bar ul.main-nav li.sfhover, #wp-admin-bar ul.main-nav li ul li.sfhover {
background-color: #333;
}you can try adding a border but must be wary of the fact that dropdowns are very sensitive to position, the hover can be disrupted quite easily and moving from parent to child can loose focus, but try dropping this in your styles and have a play around:
#wp-admin-bar ul.main-nav ul {border:1px solid red;}
In reply to: If BP is enable conditional tagThen do either of these not serve the purpose?
defined( ‘BP_VERSION’ )
did_action( ‘bp_init’ )
In reply to: If BP is enable conditional tagI think you’ll find it does exist and is how plugins are meant to work by first checking that BP is loaded?
It might be easier if you explained what you’re trying to achieve rather than the approach you would like to take to achieving it, then someone will be able to, possibly, provide an alternative method to achieving your requirement. It’s possibly a slightly confusing request as surely with BP not activated, no BP theme running why would any WP theme files need to be checking to see if BP is running?
In reply to: Is this possible?Group activity RSS feed?
In reply to: Activity Replies: Too much indentationWith something that has the potential to, in effect, break a site layout, using client side scripting is never recommended as it doesn’t degrade gracefully, those with scripting off or blocked will suffer (granted that’s not many).
As I said one option is to remove indents after a certain level and perhaps instead colour code their backgrounds.
Better is that nested comments have a limit; isn’t that an option that WP has with threaded comments
In reply to: How does WordPress/Buddypress work?I posted a ticket on this and a quick and dirty solution, which I can pastebin if required
Needs to go in a bp-custom.php file in the plugins folder
It’s basic but got a bit fed up having to manually get to dashboard.
In reply to: Activity Replies: Too much indentationUltimately it’s one of those issues that has no real solution, you can’t keep indenting something nested i.e compounding that indent. Nested levels are best capped really. It might be the case that the margin indent has to be removed for levels after say ~four
This issue is , of course, made worse with a fluid layout.
In reply to: Hey, Upload size limit issues please help!TBH you should be addressing the file itself if it is 5MB as 5MB for a web graphic is not simply ‘pretty big’ it’s far too big! I would be editing the file and compressing before attempting to upload. An avatar for web display is generally around 80px x 80px even if you double that size and whether you are talking gifs or jpgs a file of those dimensions at a web resolution of 72dpi should come out at around ~10k even a large jpg image at say 600px shouldn’t really exceed the ~50k mark and you would have 100 of those for your 5MB.
Uploading large files unnecessarily just drains data transfer, soaks up bandwidth and asks the server to have do do more work in compressing and resizing the image than it need do.
In reply to: Admin Bar CSS — background color#wp-admin-bar ul li ul {}
Around line ~140 adminbar.css
place the selector ruleset in your style.css and add your new background.
