In reply to: Vertical group menu in WP 3.0
I guess the easy answer is grab a copy of the BP-Nicy theme, Otherwise it’s going to be a case of building a child theme and starting to code up a set of new styles to override defaults styles and possibly re-factoring the markup of pages, which will require a certain degree of experience with CSS and HTML
Google is your friend:
http://www.google.co.uk/search?rls=en&q=NPH%2BCGIAlthough I wouldn’t worry too much about trying to understand this as it’s getting rather technical.
First stop ought to be your web host’s tech support who may well be able to clear up what’s happening quickly and definitively.
Failing a resolution from your web host I would head of to a good tech forum with server sub forums such as SitePoint or DevShed and ask the question there but prepare the question with as much detail of your server set up in advance as it saves people having to ask for the info and will earn you brownie points and a more favorable response.
I’ve had a look through buddypress/bp-blogs.php and buddypress/bp-blogs/bp-blogs-classes.php and it looks to me as though this meta data should be updating but why it isn’t is beyond my understanding so have opened a ticket on the issue:
Not sure our production site is running 1.2.2 so if it’s a bug it’s been around a while? I will test on various different test installs and versions in the morning and also check the code to see what the expected behavior is.
I think we are talking about the name one sets on a blog in the general settings, BP grabs that name and places it in it’s own table then uses that on the blog directory listings and elsewhere, however if a user changes this name in their sub blog BP doesn’t seem to pick that up and still displays the old one.
Funny you should mention this as it occurred to me this morning or at least a user changed their blog name and questioned why the old name was still displayed on the blog directory page. I assumed that BP didn’t update this and had to go into the DB and change the string manually. What I haven’t had a chance to do is root through the BP code to establish what is the correct behavior, whether the BP table is supposed to up date.
In reply to: WordPress 3.0 compatibility? You see roadmap says:
1.3
* WordPress 3.0 support
No mention that 1.2.4 can run on WP 3.0
In reply to: WordPress 3.0 compatibility?Ah so 1.2.4 was conceived as WP 3.0 ready, be good to know could possibly do with a little more detail in the roadmaps, or maybe there is and I just haven’t paid enough attention.
In reply to: WordPress 3.0 compatibility? It’s a case of too much work for far too small a team! that will need to be addressed as BP grows exponentially
In reply to: WordPress 3.0 compatibility? Not sure that 1.3 is that far off is it? not sure really, but I would hesitate running WP 3.0 and BP 1.2.4 on a production server.
It would be interesting to know what adjustments need to be made to enable BP to work with WP 3.0
In reply to: Buy themes17? what’s your experience in frontend coding? coding stable layouts takes some skill and experience especially for dynamic apps such as WP/BP
Do you know how most freelance coders break into the business? working for free it’s how they build up their portfolio of work to show to clients.
In reply to: WordPress 3.0 compatibility?NO I would have thought that it isn’t ever safe to assume anything!
I have WP 3.0 beta 2 installed to test, haven’t yet run BP 1.2.4 on it yet to see what’s what but don’t really expect it to fully function, BP 1.3 is the version that has to be waited on for production sites and then I would wait a while for any teething issue to be sorted out – look at the recent 1.2.4 issues that had to be resolved with a point release some 12 hours after release.
In reply to: Buy themesIt would always get labelled spam on a forum of the type that helped people for essentially no return, on the technical forum that is my home we don’t allow posts like this.
Here’s a different take on the matter why not offer one or two themes for free download, BP is starved of finished themes for members, start a group for themes? people may be more inclined to accept the promotion of the paid for offerings then? or simply have a ‘Donate’ button like the plugin authors on the site who spend anywhere from 6 hours to possibly ten times that coding essential plugins for the community and for free accept for the optional donations people may make.
In reply to: Update Buddypress then Fatal errorTo get the site back up and running rename that plugin ‘twire’ to something else to force a deactivation of it.
In reply to: Front page Idea – Where do I begin? No there is no plugin per se for the activity stream, but I sometimes wonder why plugins are so often referred to. As such the activity stream is a loop much like the famed WP loop, in the simplest sense all one has to do is copy the code that calls that loop as is found in the activity/index.php and place it where you need it in your new page, conversely it ought o be straightforward to place that call in a widget I guess so that you could move it around without having to open files.
There are many routes to achieving what you want I suppose, create a new page include the default sidebar call re-structure the main content and sidebar elements to the size you want and position, sidebar on left should simply be achieved by reversing the default styles, which is the point of CSS well formed and semantically correct markup is supposed to be visually renderable through CSS without needing – necessarily – to effect changes to markup.
If you wanted to have controllable regions on that page then you can create widget aware areas and place them in the positions on the page you would like to output content, these then when suitably named will be available on the dashboard widgets page and you can drag widgets into them for display. You can also get clever with the main sidebar and create within that file new widget areas that you could wrap in conditional queries so that a particular widget area only appeared on a stated page such as ‘groups’ or ‘blogs’
As well I guess you could simply tell WP that your reading page is not the blog but the activity stream and then customize that page closer to what you require, which may be easier?
Wrap in <code> tags and escape the opening less than angle bracket of markup. html entity for ‘less than’ = & lt ; no spaces!
In reply to: Front page Idea – Where do I begin? Not sure it’s what I would term ‘complex’. In terms of sidebar items most can be probably found through available widgets, stock ones or plugin additions which may be placed in the sidebar.
In reply to: Front page Idea – Where do I begin?Place to begin is in setting up a child theme and master stylesheet, described here in the docs somewhere:
https://codex.buddypress.org/how-to-guides/building-a-buddypress-child-theme/
If you are simply wanting to re-skin the default layout then you essentially set about overridding the default styles called into that child theme stylesheet. You will need to find the rulesets that govern the content area and sidebar and reset the widths stated for them to the values you want. As for the activity stream on the front page then you can do that by setting the reading options of the WP install to front page = ‘Activity Stream’ and creating a blank new page to hold the blog postsIn reply to: How to remove those brackets ?Actually the code you’re looking for is to be found, for example, if you look in groups/index.php at around line 17 & 20 you’ll see:
printf( __( 'All Groups (%s)', 'buddypress' ), bp_get_total_group_count() )You could simply remove those parenthesis from around the %s. Of course you would want to do this from a copy of the file as used in a child theme.
In reply to: How to remove those brackets ?You would still be following the action Boone described but simply removing the ‘(‘ and ‘)’ within that span retaining the span elements and %d; although I find it hard to believe that a language file does actually contain markup and code of this description?
In reply to: How to remove those brackets ?IMHO not observing separation of Mid Tier and Presentational Layers is a sin 😉 after all it’s not as though it’s some new radical concept!
Yes it would be nice to get that sort of markup out of core, but when? really these are decisions one makes early on in an applications life.
In reply to: Language file load evidence? Is it not though a good idea to relocate it? prevent overrights if using automatic updates, somewhat a flawed mechanism if ones language files will keep getting deleted.
While on the subject and as it might be pertinent to this threads question, when creating a new po file I’m correct in thinking what we do is take the original apply revisions to existing entries and create a new file mo but does that mo file simply contain references to the amendments only?
In other words if the original language file is updated with perhaps new labels /text what becomes of our customised file, are the two read in conjunction. In reply to: Can’t Drag Widgets to SidebarsYou’re probably going to need to provide a little more detail than that such as BP and WP versions, custom themes if any or other modifications present.
I took a spare test install to upgrade to BP 1.2.4 to see what the issues were with that release, it’s now running BP 1.2.4.1 on WPMU 2.9.2 and I can drag widgets to the sidebar region without issue.
In reply to: Upgraded to 1.2.4 and now No Blogs Showing!@r-a-y yep works beautifully and of course one doesn’t remove the amended sql query just the function call in functions.php.
In reply to: Upgraded to 1.2.4 and now No Blogs Showing!@r-a-y ah thanks I’ll give that a shot, but reverting the changes after successful completion will just produce the same issue if one dectivates/reactivates BP or am I thinking that through incorrectly (guess I’ll know after running it
)
