    Paul, I agree. I’m sure jjj has nothing to do this weekend. ;)

    @Bpisimone

    I’m not sure if BP.org has been upgraded yet to 1.1.2–but I’m assuming it has since it was a critical update.

    On a related messaging note, I just tried another test message to jjj, and this time it went through without error.

    I just sent a test message to John, with whom I was having difficulties PMing two days ago. The message went through fine. No error messages this time. I have not heard back from him yet confirming that he did indeed receive it.

    However, autocomplete is still not working for me even though John is a friend.

    Actually, for me, autocomplete does not even work on BP.org. I composed a message a couple of days ago to DJPaul and JJJ–who are both friends–and the autocomplete was AWOL. I just tried again, and no dice.

    There is also an issue with messages not getting sent which is being discussed here:

    What you are truly asking is, “How can I customize the BuddyPress slugs?” Well, there is a BP blog article that answers that question!

    Thank you! That sure does make sense–and is good advice.

    I guess that I could place it on my blog and give people the link here. That way, it will be tested by the group of people who are most interested in testing it.

    Please remember that based on the BuddyPress roadmap, some form of a privacy component will be integrated into Core for v1.2.

    But, before that comes out, there will be a public beta of my Privacy Component. I have talked with Andy and he said to proceed with the testing. So, right now, the alpha version of my component is in a very limited-release private alpha. I am almost ready to release the alpha 2 version which will also be a private release.

    Once the beta version is ready (which I’m now estimating to be around December 1st), it will be uploaded to the WP Plugin Repository and available for everyone to test. Please remember that it will still be a pre-release version which means that it should not be used in a production environment.

    Of course, as I’ve said before, even with all of this testing, there is still no guarantee that my Privacy Component will become the de facto core privacy component. Only time, and your feedback, will tell.

    In the long run it does not matter to me where the privacy settings menu reside. Proper functionality is of prime importance.

    Perhaps we will find a happy medium ground for placing the privacy settings menu in the default BP theme and simply let people decide for themselves how they style it in their own custom themes.

    Okay, I’ll have to take a closer look at this over the next few days. Make sure that you upgrade to 1.1.2 as that is the version I will be using to test and debug the Skel. Comp.

    Thanks for the mockup and idea. Anything is possible. I do imagine that whatever privacy code makes it into Core, that it may appear under the Settings menu.

    However, an argument can be made that this is a full-blown component, not unlike Groups, Profile, Blogs, Friends, etcetera. Therefore, it should be given equal status as such-especially since it is a very important feature. Most new users, maybe even some seasoned users, may not notice a privacy option in their settings menu. It is probably better to put it front and center.

    Also, since there was no guarantee that my Privacy Component would be chosen to be the Core privacy version, I decided to offer a separate main-menu level like many other plugins do.

    By the way, your mockup does not show the additional third column that appears only when a user selects the “These Users Only” option from the “Who Can View” drop down list. See the screen shot in the OP.

    You need to deactivate all BuddyPress-dependent plugins before you deactivate BuddyPress itself.

    Did you deactivate the bpPicture Album plugin before you deactivated BuddyPress? If not, then that is more than likely what caused your problem.

    Figured it out. To manually do this you need to go into your database and put this in your wp_sitemeta table under the field active_sitewide_plugins:

    a:2:{s:24:”buddypress/bp-loader.php”;i:1254779318;s:12:”bp-album.php”;i:1254851888;}

    What a given user would need to place in that particular sitemeta table record depends on what plugins they had activated. This is what you needed to do. It will not necessarily be what others would need to do.

    The best way to handle this issue is to temporarily move all your plugins out of /wp-content/plugins/ and then log back into WPMU’s backend as Site Admin. Refresh the page, logout, and then move the plugins back. Log back in and you should be good to go. Your plugins will be deactivated and ready to be reactivated.

    You’re welcome!

    I’m setting this to resolved. If for some reason you’re still having issues, as the originator of this post, you can always set it back to “not resolved”.

    The default BP themes are initially located in the /bp-themes/ directory. Although you do not technically have to move them from that location before activating BuddyPress, you will not have access to them until you move the /bp-default/ and /bp-sn-parent/ folders into the /wp-content/themes/ directory.

    Once those two theme folders are moved to the proper place, you then need to log into WPMU as Site Admin and do step 5 under “Installing BuddyPress” here:

    Installation

    Always read the readme.txt files that come with both WPMU and BuddyPress. All the basic information you need to successfully install them and get them working can be found there. More detailed information can be found on the BuddyPress Codex–like the link I provided above.

    Did you choose “Set up a new bbPress installation”” or “Use an existing bbPress installation”?

    If you do not need any of the old bbPress content, then I would suggest starting the bbPress integration from scratch. This mean deleting the old and newly-created bbPress tables in the DB, then deleting the bbPress directory from BuddyPress, and then reinstalling the bbPress files. This of course also assumes that the new bbP tables do not yet have any worthwhile data in them.

    Next, go back into WPMU’s backend and navigate to “BuddyPress > Forums Setup” and then choose “Set up a new bbPress installation”.

    Does that make a difference?

    I’m afraid if the developer of that plugin is not responding to your questions, then that may very well indicate that they have stopped supporting the plugin. You should post (if you have not already) on the WPMU forums and see if anyone has information.

    Perhaps someone there may know of an alternative or will adopt the plugin and bring it up to code. Make sure you mention that you want to use this plugin in BuddyPress.

    @pxlgirl

    If my component is deemed worthy enough to be integrated in some form or fashion into core, then I imagine what will happen is that it will show up in a bleeding-edge trunk version.

    If not, then I will gladly release it as a plugin until another solution becomes available in Core.

    @jeffsayre

    Participant

    As you said in you OP, modifying the core file is a BIG mistake. Instead, place all your custom code in a file called bp-custom.php. Then place that file in /wp-contents/plugins/.

    @jeffsayre

    Participant

    You are talking about building your own custom theme. Two pieces of advice. Read the BuddyPress Codex articles on theming found here:

    And secondly, use Firefox with FireBug.

    @jeffsayre

    Participant

    I’m setting this to resolved as the second post indicates that the OP solved their own problem.

    If you are having custom theming issues and are not the OP, then please start a new thread.

    @jeffsayre

    Participant

    If BP works fine with the default theme and all plugins turned off except BP then it is either a custom theme issue, a conflict with a 3rd-party plugin, or both.

    By the way, this also means temporarily disabling any custom code you may have placed in bp-custom.php. You need to distill your setup down to the lowest common denominator and then add back–one at a time–a new variable (such as the next plugin or a custom theme) until the problem returns.

    This script is most likely out of date with WPMU. Post a comment to the developer of the script in the link in the OP.

    but it seems I cannot post in a group that had the “old” forum once enabled. It gives me an error.

    What is the error?

    @jeffsayre

    Dido exactly what Paul just said above!

    Since Privacy is slated to be a Core BP component, I decided that my plugin needs to be first vetted through Andy before releasing it to the general community. I do not want people to simply assume that my work is the official version.

    When it is decided whether or not my plugin will in some form or fashion become the Core privacy component, then I will post back here and let everyone know.

    Issues with under-allocated memory when running PHP are a common occurrence for many PHP-based applications. It is just one of many things you need to know–or find out about–when you are in charge of systems administration.

    I usually set my PHP mem at 96MB.

    Haha!

    By saying, “This thread is pretty old”, I meant the thread to which I was about to provide the link. I did not mean this thread as in this actual thread!
