In reply to: a conceptual Group dilemma – need Ideas please
I suggest going back to index cards and card catalogs. They worked so much better.
Actually, I think that you are on the proper path. In essence, you need to create a virtual subgroup–the intersection of the two groups. This virtual subgroup would be a child to both the class year and the Cadet Company.
I take it from your description that the class year has precedence. Even though members of a given Cadet Company are allowed to communicate with members in different class years, a given member is not allowed to communicate with a member in a different Cadet Company unless they are in the same class year.
So code a function that will create a subset of data corresponding to the intersection of class year and Cadet Company. It will be a virtual subgroup even though it does not exist as an actual group in the DB. Provide a link, an icon, within the Class Year group that triggers a function that filters out the data of the Cadet Year to only display members in that Cadet Company who are in the same class year. You can do the same in the Cadet Company group as well.
Actually creating a new group would be redundant as the data already exists. It’s best to simply pull it from the two existing groups as needed.
Having never done this in BP myself, I’m not sure how you would go about it. But it should not be too difficult.
In reply to: Make Subdomain Private? This thread is pretty old, especially since there have been many changes to BP over the 7 months since it was first started. But, there are some good hints about what you can do.
Please remember that the bp-custom.php file should be placed in /wp-content/plugins/ and not /mu-plugins/ as is mentioned early on in the thread. When the thread was first started, that location was correct. But not anymore.

In reply to: MSIE CSSThe default BP theme works perfectly fine for me in Safari, FireFox and Chrome. Make sure you are using the most up-to-date version of Safari. Also, if you don’t use FireBug, I recommend that you do.
In reply to: BuddyPress Privacy Component: An UpdateJust a quick Update.
I’ve just sent off the alpha version of this plugin for Andy to look at. It has turned out to be a little more work than I originally anticipated but the end result is looking (and functioning) very nice.
In reply to: Your currently active theme is not BP enabled.Make sure that you have moved the default BP parent-child theme files into /wp-content/themes/. That means that the “bp-default†and “bp-sn-parent†folders should reside right under the /themes/ directory.
Then make sure that you have activated them as described in point 5 of the section entitled “Installing BuddyPress” in the link you provided above.
In reply to: Has anybody problems with the bp-custom.php?Where do you have your bp-custom.php file located? It has to be in /plugins/ and not within the /buddypress/ directory.
In reply to: Do's and Dont's of Server SetupsSince you are specifically asking about server setup, I’ll assume that you are either talking about a dedicated server that you’ll be leasing from a hosting provider, or a box that you will be setting up from scratch at your home or office.
Unfortunately, there are just too many variables to give a patent answer to that question. But here is a BP thread that might shed some light:
https://buddypress.org/forums/topic/buddypress-and-shared-hosting
For everyone else wondering what the bare minimum setup they need in order to have a healthy working relationship with WPMU + BP, I always provide this caveat: don’t expect to get great, or even decent, performance from a a shared hosting account. It just won’t happen. Of course there are some that claim to have several hundred active users working without issue on a shared account. That could be the case. However, in my opinion, a shared hosting setup is out of the question for a really robust, business-oriented site.
There are many, many threads over at the WPMU forums on hosting providers, server requirements, etcetera. That is probably the best place to seek advice on such matters.
Your questions are really better asked in a new thread, not in this thread.
To help you get started, have a look here:
You may have issues accessing that link at this time. It is a known issue that is being investigated. But, once it’s accessible, you will find many resources there to help you get started.
In reply to: Can't respond or edit postHaha!
Yes, repost away!
In reply to: WordPress Petition PluginI have not seen anyone on the BuddyPress forums reporting that they are using this plugin. You are the first that I’ve seen.
From the error message, it looks like WPMU has an issue with some code in the plugin. It could be caused by another plugin you’ve installed being incompatible or simply a bug within the plugin itself.
Your best bet is to contact the plugin developer, tell them about the error, and ask whether it works with BP v1.1.1.
In reply to: Can't add more than one groupI have not heard of this specific behavior before. Are you using a custom theme or the default parent/child theme that comes with BuddyPress? Have you deactivated all other plugins except BP to see if that makes a difference.
When having issues with BP, you need to boil everything down to the the lowest, common denominator–use the default BP theme and deactivate all other plugins except BP. If the issue goes away, then you most likely have a problem with a custom theme, a plugin conflict, or both.
In reply to: Codex?Andy is aware of this issue. It is some difficult-to-track-down bug with the server(s). He is working with the server admins to see if they can figure out what’s causing it. It has nothing to do with WPMU or BuddyPress–in other words, installing BP will not cause this issue on your server!
In reply to: Can't respond or edit postThat is odd. What is even more bizarre is that the linked-to thread in your OP does not appear to exist.
This has happened to a few others before. We’ll bring it to Andy’s attention when he’s back from his travels.
In reply to: BP-core-developers still working on ?Well, I appreciate the sentiment but I do not consider myself the most important. That is why I’m sleeping now.

To reconfirm what both Paul and John said above, Andy is the only official core BP developer. There are no other official core developers at this time. The rest of us play our various roles, trying to pitch in where we think we’ll have some positive impact.
From those who file bug tickets and offer patches, to those who create new plugins and themes, and to those who answer questions in the forums and IRC, it is truly the contributions of the overall community that make and will continue to make BuddyPress a strong product.
In reply to: Highly interactive theme. MooTools not compatible?Irrespective of application, the MooTools framework and the jQuery toolkit do not always play well together.
So, it is not that MooTools is not allowed in BuddyPress, it is that since jQuery is the Javascript library selected to be used in BP, you may have issues when trying to get MooTools to function properly in BP.
A couple of suggestions:
- If by chance you are using Slimbox make sure it is Slimbox2 and not Slimbox1, as the latter relied on the Mootools framework. Slimbox2 was rewritten to utilize jQuery.
- The use of the “$” can be a big source of the conflict. Both MooTools and jQuery attempt to claim the “$” as their own.
- Finally, if you are not running the latest version of MooTools, upgrading may help as version 1.2.3 introduced framework compatibility mode. Read more about it here:
In reply to: Blog categories not relative to BlogWhat you are reporting is simply WPMU’s default behavior for category URLs. You can change that if you want by logging into MU’s back end as Site Admin and going to “Settings > Permalinks > Optional ” and changing the category base.
For more detailed discussion, you’ll have the best results by searching the WPMU forums.
In reply to: Buddypress and wp-wishlist helpI suggest contacting the developers of the 3rd-party plugin WishList Member and ask if and when they plan to support BP v1.1.1. Provide them with the issues you are experiencing. Since it is a paid-for plugin, and not an open source, freely available plugin, they should provide the assistance. I won’t even go into the issue of possible GPL license infringement–besides mentioning it.
Also, I’m not sure why you want to use that plugin as its purpose is to turn a WordPress-powered site into a membership-driven site. This is what BuddyPress does and a whole lot more. Better yet, BuddyPress is free!
I’m also moving this thread to “Third Party Components & Plugins” as it is does not pertain to BuddyPress but a conflict with a 3rd-party plugin.
In reply to: BP-core-developers still working on ?I’m working on sleeping and enjoying life. Oh, and I need Andy to look at and test out the Privacy Component. Once I know it is in his hands, I’ll sleep even better!
In reply to: wordpress mu installation with buddypressFirst, if you are creating sub domains for each individual blog make sure the blogs are being confirmed through the submitted email during registration. you will see a white screen for every blog not confirmed.
If you are setting up WPMU with subdomain blogs then you have to add a wildcard DNS record on your server. If you do not, you’ll have significant issues. This is detailed in the readme.txt file that comes with the WPMU install package.
This is why we ask everyone having issues with BP if they fully tested WPMU and made sure it was functioning properly before installing ANY plugins–including BuddyPress. Fully testing does not mean giving it a cursory once over. It means fully testing all the major functions. This should take some time. The most obvious first function to test is the creation of additional blogs.
In reply to: After upgrade to RC-2 avatar thumbnails disappearedFirst of all, you are posting in a thread that is marked as resolved and is more than five months old. Please read this thread for more details why this can be an issue.
Secondly, we have no information on your current setup. One could assume that you are still using RC-2 since this thread pertains to that version.
Finally, see if this post in the linked-to thread answers your question:
https://buddypress.org/forums/topic/buddypress-plugins-and-theme-not-loading#post-17586
I’m closing this thread as any further discussion should take place in a new thread.
In reply to: Got banned after asking a simple question? As far as being “bozoed” by someone, that someone would be the Akismet algorithm. No person does the bozoing. I have been bozoed twice myself on these forums in the past by Akismet.
If you think you may have been bozoed, just send a friendly message to a moderator. They will look into it.
“that’s a wpmu question” – are not very helpful either. In the times it takes to write some crap like that, you could post a link to the wpmu thread about the issue.
I sometimes do just that. But, there are exceptions.
If it is a question that has been asked too many times here and a little searching would show that to be the case, I will kindly remind them to search first and then I redirect them to the proper place. If it is a question that will require more time to do the research for them than it does to write the response, I will also kindly redirect them to the proper place.
And you are correct. None of the moderators get paid. We all volunteer our time and independently decide how best to serve the overall community. Part of the duties of all moderators is to educate new users on how best to get results and on proper forum procedure and etiquette. Pointing people to the proper place to ask questions falls under education.
In reply to: Vcard Div Location?FireBug is your friend when trying to sort out CSS issues–and much more!
In reply to: problem with buddypress.org forums?See if this solves your issue:
In reply to: where to change font-size at my BP-site ?If you use the FireBug add-on with FireFox, it will indicate which CSS files and selectors are responsible.
I assume you mean the plugin Group Forum Subscripton for BuddyPress found here:
https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/group-forum-subscription-for-buddypress/
You need to contact the plugin developer and provide them with the details about your issue.
I’m moving this thread to the proper forum, “Third Party Components & Plugins”.
