In reply to: How to customize Buddypress Theme
General theming guidance is beyond the scope of these forums as it really is more an issue of learning how to use CSS and WordPress/BuddyPress template loops to create the design you are after.
But, to help get you started, here a few links:
- Advice on using the default BP themes or Skeleton Theme that comes with BP
- A great tool to use while designing your theme.
- Basic how tos on WordPress theme design. NOTE: this link pertains to wordpress themes in general, not BuddyPress themes. But, you should really understand WP theming before you set out to do a BP custom theme.
In reply to: Help! – I'm a BP noob and I broke my theme! So you are using a custom member theme that used to work but recently stopped working.
Did you discover that your custom theme stopped working after you upgraded BuddyPress? If so, you are missing some new functionality in your theme. In other words, your custom theme is out of date.
Switch to the default BP member theme and see if that works. If so, then you have three choices:
1. Copy the functions.php file from the new default member theme into your custom theme. If that does the trick, problem solved.
2. If that does not work, then the next option is to search through BuddyPress trac for all theme changes to the member theme since the last version. Make any necessary changes to your custom member theme.
3. As an alternative to 2 above, you could simply compare the code in the default BP member theme with your custom member theme.
Also, if you built your custom member theme from the default BP member theme, make sure that you have all the necessary CSS files for your custom theme.
In reply to: Help with settingsThis is not a BuddyPress issue. It is a WPMU issue. I would suggest searching the WPMU forum for an answer. If you cannot find an answer there, then post a new thread in that forum.
In reply to: Members Widget ProblemsThere were some issues with the new Widget API in WPMu 2.8.1. I would suggest upgrading to WPMU 2.8.3 and see if that solves the problem.
Okay, so you’ve successfully upgraded to WPMU 2.8.3.
Did you finish the WPMU upgrade by logging into the backend as the Site Admin and going to “Site Admin > Upgrade” and hitting the “Upgrade Site” button?
After that, you go to Plugins menu group and under your BuddyPress plugin, it should say:
There is a new version of BuddyPress available. View version 1.0.3 Details or upgrade automatically.
In reply to: problem with member pagesbut when I click on any member or go to the members page, the template for members doesn’t load.
Elisheva-
Welcome to the BuddyPress forums!
When I went to your site and clicked on the “Members” button, it did bring up a members’ theme. However, it seems like you have selected the “Skeleton BuddyPress Member Theme” and not the “BuddyPress Default Member Theme”.
Please go back into the admin panle to “Buddypress > General Settings”, select “BuddyPress Default Member Theme” and then make sure to hit the “Save Settings” button at the bottom.
If the default member theme is already selected, deselect it by selecting a different theme, hit the “Save Settings” button, and then reselect the “BuddyPress Default Member Theme” once again and hit the “Save Settings” button one more time.
Does that fix the issue?
In reply to: how to create group'slug when make new groupIn reply to: Custom 404 page??Try switching back to the default BP home theme and see if that theme’s 404 page works. If it does, then that means the theme you are using is not up to date with the BP theme file changes.
If that is the case, you can do two things:
1. Try copying over the functions.php file from the bphome file into your custom theme and see if that solve the issue.
2. Contact the theme designer and ask when they plan to update their theme to be WPMU 2.8.1 compatible–I assume you are talking just about the home theme and not the member theme.
In reply to: feature requests…As far as number one: https://buddypress.org/forums/topic/only-one-blog-for-user
As far as numbers two and three, I’d search the WPMU forums and the WP plugin repository for possible solutions.
In reply to: terms and serviceIn reply to: buddypress and simplepressIf you are asking if can you use some other forum software instead of bbPress as a sitewide forum, then the answer is yes. If you are asking if can you use some other forum software instead of bbPress that will share user credentials or function as a group-based forum component, then the answer is no–not without doing a lot of custom coding.
However, I believe that Simple:Press does share WP user credentials, but I am not positive about this as I do not use it.
Korhan, great! Thank you!
In reply to: Accidently emptied the wp_users tableShould emptying the wp_users table ideally not also delete the connected user data in all the other tables, including xprofile? Or is that not how MySQL works?
No. The way the MySQL tables are set up for the *presses, is that there is no referential integrity. So, if you go into the DB’s backend and change a record or delete a record, it does not cascade the changes to sibling or child tables.
For example, assuming that you were allowed to do this by the table’s schema, if you changed the user ID in the wp_users table, it would not automatically update that ID in all other related tables to reflect the new ID number. Of course, the record ID fields in the *presses are automatically incremented, but you get the point.
Up until recently (past several years or so?), MySQL did not even offer the option of setting up tables with referential integrity. Now it does in a less-than-desirable way. It is not as simple to do in MySQL as it is in PostgreSQL, but it is straight forward enough. It requires that the tables have foreign keys and are created with the Type = InnoDB extension.
Personally, I’m a big PostgreSQL fan, but I do not want to start a PGsql vs MySQL flame war. If you use the *presses, you use MySQL. It’s as simple as that.
But, referential integrity is still not usually set up in many MySQL DBs. So, this is nothing peculiar to the *presses. Why? Because the developers make sure that the code takes care of the updates and cleanup.
This is one, of many, reasons why you really need to know what you are doing in the DB’s backend.
In reply to: Accidently emptied the wp_users tableYep, it sounds like a painful learning experience.
It happens to all of us at sometime. That’s when you finally get the point of backups and following proper coding protocol.
In reply to: Accidently emptied the wp_users tableThere’s not too much you can do–unless you made a backup of your MySQL DB before messing with it in the backend.
You should always make a backup of your DB before you do anything to it that may result in changes to the data or the data schema. In fact, make a backup of your DB at the end of each coding day just incase the unexpected happens.
I assume that you did zero customizations to the data schema of your MySQL DB. If so, then just delete your current DB and then create a new one with the exact same username and password. But, if you do this, you’ll need to reinstall BuddyPress so that BP’s tables get created in the DB. You will also have to reenter any test data, but it should get you back up an running.
Also, I’m not sure why this is an issue:
I’ve customized so much code on the back end that reinstalling buddypress would be a huge pain.
Do you mean that you have hacked the core or WPMU and / or BuddyPress? If so, you should stop doing that as every time BuddyPress is updated, your hacks will be lost.
Instead of hacking the core BP files, either create your own custom plugin(s) to hold your code, or use the bp-custom.php file. That way, if and when you need to delete your install and start from scratch, you can easily do so. Just make sure you have back ups of any custom theme files, a listing of all your plugins, a copy of your bp-custom.php file, and a copy of your wp-config.php file assuming that you want to use the same MySQL DB.
Korhan-
Please report this as a bug in trac by creating a new ticket. You login to trac with the same credentials you use to log into this site.
The theme used on this site will not be made available. This question is asked about once a week. Here was the first thread that posed that question. See Andy’s response.
You can design your own theme to accomplish a similar effect–use Firefox with Firebug and see how Andy styled the theme.
In reply to: Allowed memory size?Since you had single-user WordPress installed before, I’d suggest doing a clean install. This means making sure that you delete both the single-user WP and the newly installed WPMU files. Also, delete your MySQL database and start with a new one.
I assume that you do not have any data yet. If that is correct, then you can safely proceed down this road. If you do have important data in the MySQL DB, then you should back it up first.
Also, you should use a separate MySQL DB for WPMU. Do not use the one that you are already using for single-user WP.
Follow these instructions for help on installing WPMU. Make sure you read through all instructions linked below before beginning the install:
- Download BuddyPress from here
- https://codex.buddypress.org/getting-started/installing-wordpress-mu/
- Read the readme.txt file that comes with the WPMU download
Then, once WPMU is installed and functioning properly, follow these instructions for help on installing BuddyPress.

- Read the readme.txt file that comes with the BuddyPress download
In reply to: BP based on WP not WPMU possible ?Luc-
Many people have asked the same question. The good news is that there are plans to make BuddyPress compatible with single-user WordPress in the future.
We’re not sure when that will happen, so give it time and keep checking back.
In reply to: Allowed memory size?We have no idea what the issue is now so we cannot provide help. Please provide details.
Read this for more information on asking for support.
In reply to: bad avatar upload urlI’d look into three things:
- Check to make sure that the permissions on blogs.dir are correct
- Disable all non-BP plugins (one at a time) and see if that makes a difference. Some people have reported that certain plugins can change the permissions on blogs.dir.
- However my guess, and it is just that, is that it is an issue with your GD module not finding the libjpeg library. Someone else reported a similar issue and that is what it turned out to be. Information on patching libjpeg can be found here: http://cblfs.cross-lfs.org/index.php/Libjpeg
In reply to: Upgrade confusion.I’m setting this to resolved as the issue has been properly addressed.
In reply to: Allowed memory size?It looks like you are trying to install BuddyPress under single-user WordPress.
BP currently requires the multi-user version of WordPress. Read this and follow the link in point one: https://codex.buddypress.org/getting-started/installing-buddypress/
In reply to: WordPress-MU / slow loading ?Are you on a shared hosting plan?
I suggest that you contact your hosting company and ask for the assistance in figuring out what is going on.
In reply to: BuddyPress VIP Hosting by Automattic? Also, Automattic’s VIP hosting is provided to just a very few, select, large clients. It is not something you can simply decide to purchase.
So, my guess is that, yes, Automattic will offer BuddyPress installs to their very few VIP clients, but it will not be available to the vast majority of users.
