They would get loaded after the WPMU ones, so if there’s no check for them pre-existing, then they obviously overwrite them.
I currently don’t have a cookie_domain setup in wp-config.php either and everything works fine. It should get assigned by WPMU in wp-settings.php if it isn’t in the config.
In the wp-config.php file, verify:
$base = '/';
define('DOMAIN_CURRENT_SITE', 'domain.com' );
define('PATH_CURRENT_SITE', '/' );
define('SITE_ID_CURRENT_SITE', 1);
define('BLOGID_CURRENT_SITE', '1' );…where domain.com is obviously your domain. If you are using any settings unlike what I posted above, paste them here please.
In reply to: Help us… Help you…Updated: Added DJPaul. We need anything else here fellas?
Are you using
/%postname%/for your permalink? If so, that will be a problem.Not sure if this is a bug anymore or not, but this is something that has been fixed/broken/fixed/broken/fixed over the past few months it seems.
In reply to: Bug (?): private message to two membersHere we go again. Burt, Jeff, man your battle stations.

We’ll take a look at it.
Right now on testbp.org it looks like it’s working correctly. Was this an upgrade from a previous BuddyPress install, and if so, did you upgrade your member theme files also?
Lots of subtle cookie things mostly. I haven’t tried WPMU trunk yet, but integrating WPMU 2.7.1, BP 1.0.2, and bbPress 1.0 should be the same as your tutorial.
In reply to: Buddypress 1.0 looks bad with Firefox 3.5Basically the cause is that Firefox 3.5 has issues with shorthand font declarations that contain quotation marks. Deleting the quotes around the font names will help Firefox cooperate, however it may have negative impacts on older browsers that rely on them.
You can also split up the shorthand and use
font-family: Lucida, Tahoma, serifas an example as well.In reply to: Buddypress Fatal ErrorHmm… Something isn’t working correctly, because it still says “BP_PLUGIN_DIR” in the error message. Not saying this couldn’t be related to BuddyPress somehow, but it doesn’t sound like it.
Have you installed any other plugins recently? Can you FTP to your plugins directory and disable them one by one and see what happens?
In reply to: about globals, sessions & cookies.grosbouff, so you have a set of administrative default filter settings, and you’re going to let users set their own filters and customize existing queries? Is that right?
If so, then Andy is of course correct. It won’t need this in a session because once the plugin is loaded via buddypress, the info is available without any additional queries to the db once the data is acquired for the first time. It shouldn’t slow anything down, other than the initial gathering of the data.
In reply to: [URGENT] Problem with Group Avatar imageSounds like the file didn’t get uploaded to the server. Check your upload folder owner and permissions settings.
There are others that have had and fixed this issue already. Do a search around the forums (hint: check the stickies) and see if they help you out?
In reply to: bbPress 1.0 released!I’m on it.
Everyone is always very quick to advertise the benefits of a single-sign on service, or a go-between to allow users to sign into your website using any number of different credentials, but there are a few major flaws with this idea, and they are going to become extremely apparent very soon.
The first MAJOR flaw I see in this design, is that all it takes is one website to put up password stealing/sniffing code, and now you’ve given your twitter password to anyone with access to the sites malicious intentions.
The second MAJOR flaw I see from a developers standpoint is that you as a site administrator no longer have control over the user data that is using your website. This means tracking down a problem user that creates an account with their facebook, you ban them, their google, you ban them, their open_id, you ban them, etc… That, along with the fact that these user registrations tend to add their own cryptic names into your database fields; now you’re forced to try to know who “fb8288373” really is, when had they registered the normal way, you could see they are “johnjamesjacoby.”
From a user perspective, I don’t plan on using Facebook for the rest of my life, so when I delete my account in a few years, that means I can no longer use your site without creating a new profile.
Also, if I’m logged into facebook on my computer, and close facebook, and then my girlfriend walks over to a site and clicks on facebook connect and continue, it logs her in as me because I am still logged into facebook. Now I’ve registered at a website that I didn’t want to register at, and I have no way to delete that account, and who knows what kind of information they’ve decided to store about me by this point…
Quite frankly, I can’t wait for this trend to die. It’s a headache waiting to turn into a brain tumor in my opinion.
libationblog, basically BuddyPress/WPMU will meet all of your needs and wants, but you might have to hold its hand and then twist its arm to get it to listen.
When you consider that WordPress alone can do just about all of the things you mention with the help of independent plugins, adding BuddyPress on top of it alleviates all of the user profile woes that WordPress alone can’t do. But if you plan on using BuddyPress, then you need to step up to WPMU, which sounds like you might not really need, but have to have to use BP.
The nice thing about WPMU is that you don’t need to let people have their own blogs, so it will work exactly the same as a single user WordPress installation does, but with BuddyPress on top of it.
I say give it a go, and give yourself a few solid days to get used to how BP works, and you will probably be pretty happy with what you end up with.
Haven’t tested the localization yet myself Burt, but I’m about to now and it looks like it should work at first glance.
In reply to: Changing the Blogs Creation Function**Just read over your post again and you say you want to eliminate the entire backend? Off the top of my head, I don’t know if that’s possible.
Best way to do this would be to integrate the P2 theme into your user blogs.
Otherwise, I know there is a WPMU plugin out there to help limit the admin side bar’s available links. If you manually navigate to the page you can still get to them, but it hides the options from view.
In reply to: Where do you find BuddyPress developers?This website isn’t so much about the hiring of developers as much as it is about the development and support of the software itself. Many of us do website development on the side (or as a main source of income) and I suggest you keep an eye out for those people.
You can also check out the BuddyPress Job Board group and see if anyone volunteers there?
In the future I’m sure a few developers will step forward as goto guys.
In reply to: Site Members Loop & VariablesIf he’s trying to do…
<?php if ( bp_has_site_members( 'type=' . $foo1 . '&max=' . $foo2 ) ) : ?>…then in theory it *should* work, at least from what I see.
I’ll have time in the morning to check on this if you don’t by then Burt.
Firstly, in response to the post you made that got me here (which I deleted out of respect for the topic starter,) please don’t ask for help in someone else’s topic. Everyone’s questions hold the same water here, and we’re all drinking from the same cup. I have no idea what that means, but it sounds like a good analogy.

If what you want to do is replace the word “Blog” all through-out a BuddyPress install, you’re going to need to modify the template in a few places, as well as some core files that gettext that out for you.
I haven’t really tried tricking the gettext into translating specific words for me, but I bet it’s possible to do, albeit probably not easily.
In reply to: Which version of bbPress to use?I’ve had no issues with the current trunk version of bbPress. bbPress has been so furiously updated the past few days/weeks, it’s hard to use a RC version because Sam updates the trunk minutes/hours after releasing it once someone finds a bug. Also with WordPress 2.8+ happening, and with cookies changing each time something new comes, bbPress integration has been a constant challenge for not just users, but developers also.

Things should start slowing down soon, but man is all this activity exciting!
In reply to: How to use full name, first name + last nameFact is, that BuddyPress can still only build off of the weaknesses of WordPress itself. What you’re trying to do can really only be worked around with smoke and mirrors, because WordPress itself doesn’t really care what your real name is; the fields exist simply to add depth to a username.
Short of developing your own MU/BP plugin to shift the emphasis, you’re out of luck. Usernames are 100% necessary, because it’s how you login and out of the site, along with your password. Usernames cannot include characters other than alpha-numeric, so you can’t use an email address either. This means they MUST create a username. You could make a plugin or modify your registration to force the creation of a username based on two fields (first name + last name) but that means you’ll need to tell the user what your website made their login name to be, instead of letting them make their own.
There really are only a hand-full of sites that don’t use some kind of username as a login, and in my opinion it makes more sense because not everyone uses the same email address for life, and what happens if I registered with my work email address and get laid off, and I need to login but forgot my password? Now my new password goes to an email address I have no access to. In this case, username makes the most sense, and is almost fail safe unless you’re REALLY having a bad day and forgot your username too.
What about people like me, that like to use their middle names? I get no respect I tell ya!
In reply to: url problemAre you using a custom theme of some kind? If so, did you copy over the code from bphome/functions.php? If not, do you have any other plugins installed, and can you verify that you have BuddyPress installed 100% correctly?
In reply to: Get fatal error when trying to activateSeems really odd that your WPMU + BuddyPress installation somehow takes up over 30MB of memory.
You could try upping the available memory to say, 40MB or so, and see if that helps? Do a search here (or Google) for php.ini and hopefully that should help you on your way. There are a few things you can put there to help increase the available memory for your hosting package.
Basically you just make a file called php.ini and put it either in your WordPress root directory, or your wp-admin directory. I’m not sure it really makes a big difference, but I suppose it also depends where the errors are coming from mostly too.
In reply to: Who’s Online not workingYes please.
In reply to: Group Invites with No FriendsThis falls into the category of a custom modification that either you will need to write yourself, or enlist someone to potentially write specifically for you. To the best of my knowledge this should be fairly straight forward, however the current method, including functions and template, aren’t setup for this.
In reply to: “Admin Fields Set” BuddyPress PluginsLooks like a lot of people have different ways of doing things like this. It’s good to have perspective. :thumbup:
In reply to: 500 Error after uploading BuddyPress 1.0.2Damn I was in a meeting and I missed all this fury, but the PHP version was my next suggestion.
1and1 people can do this by adding this line to their .htaccess file. (This has also been covered before.)
AddType x-mapp-php5 .php
