Unfortunately I’m not a coder so I don’t know how to make that one work with WPMU. It would be great if someone did that. I just wish there was something that existed now. I’d rather use BP for the site(s) I’m doing, but so far I think Drupal has the best FB integration by far. I’m just not a big fan of Drupal in general. I know it’s very powerful, but I totally prefer using WP to build sites.

I agree. Users will be confused by having a “Blog” menu item and a “Blogs” item. They won’t necessarily understand that “Blog” means the blog of the main/host site. “News” is a much better choice, IMHO. I think people will understand that this means news or other info from the main/host site.

Your users’ blogs will get whatever template you have set as “default”, which is probably the BuddyPress Home Theme. So do this:

1) Rename the BuddyPress Home Theme something other than “default”.

2) In the dashboard for your main blog (admin), assign the BuddyPress theme to your blog. That’s what users will see when they visit your site, as your “blog” is the site.

3) Choose the theme you want your users to have as their default blog theme.

4) Name your chosen default blog theme “default”.

Nicola, I hope you can accept some constructive criticism.

You have made tremendous contributions to BuddyPress. However, I think it’s ironic that you ask people what they want as the next plug-in, then you reject suggestions that don’t match your open-source philosophy. In this thread, more than one person asked for Facebook Connect, and other people asked for other Facebook-style features. I didn’t count all the requests, but I would say that Facebook functionality or integration is the thing that was requested most.

But you have an objection to Facebook because it’s a commercial operation and you prefer open-source. However, many of us need our sites to be commercially successful, so FB integration can be very helpful to us whether we like it or now.

So please don’t ask for requests and then reject the most popular request because you don’t like it.

Mmm, I’m not dependent on Facebook (and I don’t particularly like it), but I’m smart enough to know that FB is immensely popular. A smart site owner will take advantage of that popularity instead of trying to compete with it. It’s hard not to support something that has over 150 million active users.

I was trying to point out that it might not be necessary to write such a plug-in. The plug-in already exists (the one from Sociable, plus another one from a Facebook developer). It might only take a little tweaking to make it work with WPMU. Writing a plug-in from scratch probably isn’t necessary.

What kind of payment would you require to tweak an existing plug-in to work with WPMU?

The Facebook Connect plug-in works beautifully on regular WP, but not WPMU. I’ve heard on other forums that there are just a couple of bugs keeping it from working with MU, so it might be very easy to implement…for someone who knows how. (I don’t.)

For me, FB Connect is MUCH, MUCH more attractive than OpenID. My target audience is the general public, not Linux evangelists. Most of my target audience uses Facebook, but has no idea what OpenID is. A Facebook button on my site is of much more commercial value then OpenID (whether I like it that way or not). Small social networks are often competing with Facebook, and people are a lot more likely to join my sites if my sites integrate smoothly with FB.

Just my .08 worth. Please consider FB Connect.

I read someone’s forum post elsewhere saying that the plug in should theoretically work with WPMU, however, for some reason something isn’t being created properly in the wp_users table or something like that. The user reported running the mySQL directly in phpMyAdmin, and saying that this fixed the problem. But I don’t know how to do that.

I’m just offering this in hopes that it helps someone (smarter than me) to help this plug-in work in WPMU.

I also tried the plug-in on a clean WPMU install without BuddyPress. And some of the same issues happened there too.

Nicola, do you still have any interest in adapting this plug-in to work with WPMU? I don’t know how much time it would take, but I think this would be a HUGE feature for BP. The “Invite Friends” feature is slick. (That’s one thing that does work.)

Okay, I installed it on the main site page (as a WP plug-in, not MU plug-in). With plug-in installed, the top bar (My Account, My Blogs, etc.) does not appear. Interaction with Facebook works somewhat, for example it is possible to invite Facebook friends to the blog. However, the login doesn’t seem to work well, and there is no logout option.

This has potential but must work nicely. Can someone advise how to get it working in WPMU?

Can you clarify…does this plug-in work with BuddyPress/WPMU? The installation instructions seem to be for WordPress in general, not MU. And I saw in another forum that this plug-in breaks WPMU.

I’m not sure what you mean. It’s possible for users to choose traditional WordPress themes for their blogs, while using BuddyPress themes for the BuddyPress-related stuff. I struggled with this too, but if you read the instructions for the individual theme downloads, it makes more sense. The instructions for the package download don’t exactly make it clear.

So, I’ve got a BuddyPress home theme with its own name, a BuddyPress member theme (which is required), and then a traditional WP theme I’ve set to “default” (by changing its directory name to “default”), which is the default things for user blogs. And I will also have a selection of traditional themes that users can switch their blogs to.
