    I am 100% sure it’s something I corrupted along the way with my current build. After I pull out all my BP mods I will refresh the entire code base and I bet it goes away

    1. not to be a dick but it would help a lot if you could create a better topic title than WTF??

    2. that error smells really fishy…almost spam like. scary. curious to see what comes of it

    Wow. I am so deep into BP now that all my requests re driven by my excitement for how much more we can do. Here’s a taste:

    1. Facebook like image management

    a. taggable with members

    b. cross ref with groups

    c. albums, etc.

    d. geo tagging (ok that’s asking a lot!)

    e. commentable

    2. gpo1’s idea – events

    a. full event , map integration functionality

    b. association w/ groups ie a group event

    3. integrated chat with online members

    4. full featured address book/ friend management

    a. friend groups

    b. better message addressee handling

    c. group messaging – ok these are more feature request than plugins

    5. fully integrated content search

    a. results by type (members, groups, posts, forums postings – a la FB)

    looked like a perfect solution and I have it all installed with the same smtp info my Mail client uses to send mail but when I do a test signup in BP, nothing happens and I never receive the validation email

    Andy – Even if they did it wouldn’t accomplish the mission. The search you speak of seems to only search the titles or names in members, blogs, and groups NOT content. I have yet to be able to search for content

    I spoke to soon. On my test dev environment, a topic posted on the forum DOES show up in site wide activity. damn. now I need to figure out how I broke that!

    Looks easy enough thanks BUT…..(shows ignorance) what is the “outgoing mail server” on a MAMP install? That’s what every solution I try keeps asking me and I don’t know what to put down. Do i have to install one…(thought postfix was the one that came standard on Macs)

    SO SO glad to hear you are having that problem. I am too. I can see what’s happening: the css ID=”Sidebar” is being wrapped into ID=”Content” only on this page and only in a non logged in state (which is why most of us never noticed. I am still trying to find the code that does this as single.php and all other files that help produce this page seem OK. Lemme know if you find it.

    Well said Trent. I would imagine one should only chime in with criticism like this if you know database optimization….but that’s just me

    Clarification and more INFO:

    Sometimes you feel better when you find the same problem on the test site!

    Here’s what’s happening (there too)

    When a message or forum post is initially sent (no manual page refresh) BP puts escape characters everywhere. If you manually reload the page (any browser) the messages/posts are reformatted and the characters removed. I guess the good news is my users are noticing as much (only when they submit.

    cdaniel09 – you need to move up to wpmu 2.7

    One final note: the actions look appropriate for removing top level nav items like “My Account”, etc but the Sub Nav items in MyAccount are created in a loop, as are their own Sub Nav items so you’d have to remove them from the source….which I am still looking for

    @mikepratt

    Nicola – I appreciate the tip, I do but now I have to answer a million other questions (most of us a novice hacks unlike yourself) So….remove what action? Where are all these actions? Are there any special considerations? Is there a general format for the function to create this action removal? I see stuff for the Admin Bar all over the place…member theme, bp-blogs, bp-core and it’s a wild goose chase to figure it all out. I assumed someone knew how to do a generic Admin bar item removal. Many Thanks

    Brad – nicely done. a few beginner questions:

    1. where are you applying this filter? I assume 2 was the field_id?

    2. For the web site link (non-bp link) in your example, do users need to merely enter a valid url? just http://www.example.com or what, specifically – I will need to steer them.

    3. How would you go about configuring a mailto: link (assuming they were safe behind the login walls form scrapers

    @mikepratt

    Just did a test. BP is adding escape characters all over the place somewhere in the process. forum posts done in bbPress directly are just fine.

    Andy, Burt, Nicola – Does BP do any additional text filtering along the way?

    @mikepratt

    Participant

    1. should it not be require_once(“bp-core.php”) (“.php” instead of “-php”)

    2. shoudl be add_user… (typo) (my fault)

    3. I tried using ‘wpmu_new_user’ as well as ‘signup_finished’ and neither worked. In my main blog the drop down for Role is still selected to ‘Subscriber’

    I hope we solve this as I don’t want to have to manually “Author” each new user!

    @mikepratt

    Participant

    The follwoing doesn’t work but I feel like I’m close, no?

    /* set new user role to Author */
    function BugleNotes_set_default_role() {
    add_uder_to_blog('1',$current_user->ID,'author');
    }
    add_action('wpmu_new_user', 'BugleNotes_set_default_role');

    @mikepratt

    Participant

    Nicola – What action would you hook that code into? Also – will the add_user function also serve to just “update” the user’s role as well? It wasn’t clear to me upon inspection of the WPMU code. In BP I can find all the code that specifies the creation of a new user Blog but since I have that turned off, it never is called. I am still trying to find the code that adds a user to the BP Main Blog (add_user is never called that i can see. Where do you suppose this is being set?

    I have done the same. Shame that all profile fields deal with everything as plain text. Can’t make links look pretty or email addresses function as mailto links

    who is better than you , Nicola? Many Thanks

    @mikepratt

    Gogo – I had/have the same issue so I am going to try a function as per rec from Nicola

    Burt – wanted to run another issue (which I may have solved but I am seriously nervous about opening up to users) IM, Phone, email, any way (prefer IM or Phone)

    Just to make things weirder:

    Might have solved the problem mentioned above by:

    1. creating user in BP 1st, admin rights, change pw

    2. bb install process – keymaster is chosen as exactly the user created in BP previously

    3. login admin bb install, change pw of keymaster, activate plugin, check off xmlrpc boxes

    NOTE: I did NOT add the line $bb->bb_xmlrpc_allow_user_switching = true; to bb-config

    When I did, it broke again. Took it back out and full functionality.

    Frankly, I’m afraid to ever launch for fear of getting tons of topics and posts generated anly to break it down the line and cause much down time while we fix……
