If this insatll scheme that Andy speaks of is done…an included insatll with a forum generated for each group, is it safe to think that existing forums and post data will not be rendered moot and will nicely transfer over…if need be?
Thanks Nicola. Can’t wait to add it once I get bbPress re-installed. Major issues getting back to where I was
Am dealing with an entirely different mysterious monster here: After running for weeks, I somehow corrupted my db and felt a fresh db was the only way to go (only test data to worry about) Currently running 2.7, BP latest trunk and a bbPress 1.0a4.
After getting all the way to bbPress/Wordpress integration menu (and seeing all the properly entered cookies/salts) when I enter the “wp_” prefix and click “Save settings” I am kicked out to the bbPress forum login screen and upon login of the keymaster or any other account, I am returned the error message “user does not exist” and thus completely locked out of the install. This happens whether I clear cookies or not at various stages in the process. Please help!
moving on. corrupt database. total re-install. much joy
Burt – just tried you on IRC. any shot at a little help solving a nagging problem tomorrow? I am at wits end
Nicola – I’d love a plugin if you find the time. I’m not sure where you plan on applying the filter? After all the other Activity filters are applied in Site_Wide_Activity or before?
No Joy. When I went to Site Admin -> Blogs -> and changed the Default Role to “Author” (also tried “author”) but every time I register a new user it shows up in my main blog as “Administrator” and if you look at the user under the Site Admin -> Users menu it says they are a Subscriber.
So which is it? Are there roles for both the User and the main blog that are different? I also tried a plugin found here https://mu.wordpress.org/forums/topic.php?id=4166
no love. this is a biggie for me so I’ll be so so gracious if someone has insight! Thanks,
Mike
love to IM if u can. AOL IM: mikejpratt
I don’t know I missed that function. My plan is to attack the activity filters (bp_create_excerpt claims to fake excerpts if nec) and apply this to forum posts somewhere in the process. Hopefully this is all that’s needed given the activity feed just deals with content and shouldn’t care if it has been truncated to an excerpt. Hoping.
Aren’t you in MI?
as both an Army brat and former officer…I am LOLing. good one, burt
good guess, Burt! Oddly, i am now getting the same thing on my MAMP install of my prod site…only when I click on a user and go to http://localhost.localdomain/buglenotes/members/admin (or any other username)
Thoughts on where to snoop to figure this out? (forcing me to mess around in prod again -hating)
Can someone tell me where the bp_create_excerpt is? I have looked in every file can’t find it. I’m sure it’s under my nose
Thank you, Sir
on the other hand…..this is a Forum and the link I just included DID get interpreted correctly. Hmmm. Must be me. Any help is appreciated.
there’s a forum topic listing all sites
I have done exactly what you are talking about at http://buglenotes.com. I set default role to Author, turned off new blog creation, and then modified menus as nec to remove personal blog options (so as not to confuse). I also renamed the News menu item to Blog. Now everyone contributes posts to a “central” blog. So far so good. Of course, this could all backfire after launch
OK. Here’s the code for the Featured Groups widget. It’s the first widget I have ever written so if you find a bug or some horribly inefficient code, speak up! That said, it works great and has 2 parameters
1. Title
2. Group ID’s to feature
Code: http://pastey.net/105394
Install: just copy the code into a file ex. mywidgets.php and put the file in your mu-plugins folder. Tweak as nec, rinse, repeat. Enjoy.

currently running at http://buglenotes.com
Trent – great explanation. You at least saved me a bunch of work. As it stands I may just do a minimal transfer to give me a populated data set to work with. To be sure, that seriously limits the mods you can do (eg don’t tweak something that changes the db schema) but it does allow you to play with plugin dev.
That would be cool. Happy New Year btw and I’ll leave it off my list since it’s on yours
Gotcha. Will keep you all posted. (you should be a developer or something, you keep coming up with great solutions
blueocean – absolutely! guys like burt, nicola and andy are over the top helpful and the dev site, buddypressdev.org is also a great place. I too have been playing with live ammo but, ironic that you mention, I am about to install a local MAMP site so I can tinker locally and not destroy my own community. should have done that in the 1st place
Excellent point, blue ocean. If there isn’t a fix, I am going to hack the group settings to at least provide better textual guidance to avid what you pointed out. Hoping not to have to do that
Just figured out that a control setting in a plugin: cForms II was conflicting. Looking into it now
I am running 2.7 beta. mystery
so annoying. won’t work either. look at the right sidebar: http://buglenotes.com
