In reply to: Photo Albums…. omfg!!
Don’t forget, folks, that while NextGen and Zen are awesome..like Dennis said, they are for single user galleries. The phrase “BP plugins then only have to provide ways to display images stored by those apps within the BP context” is not a trivial one, however lightly it is thrown around. Pictures not only be stored and accessed in a scalable manner, but relationships to users need to be maintained, in a ddition to Groups and possibly even events. Then each image must maintain an associated comment/activity stream set of functionality. Finally, in order to be truly useful in a social media context, the ability to “tag” a user in an image will be very important.
Just because @peterverkooijen says he doesn’t need it doesn’t mean it can’t be argued that it shouldn’t be a core element.
In reply to: Index page modification????@thetico Just tell your partners that Ning is to platforms like the Model T was to cars….You can have any color you like, as long as it’s black
In reply to: Hiding Buddypress from the View Source?Well – you could hide it but you’d have to hide a ton of references in html to the underlying framework and it woul dbe nearly impossible to completely pull off, conventions being what they are. If you’re that good, i bet you also can build one helluva theme!
@D Cartwright Cool idea. With fine grain granularity of which items generate notifications, my plugin and Boone’s are rendered obsolete (given we just cover one form of activity really)
Happy to test when it’s ready.
In reply to: Hiding Buddypress from the View Source?It’s open source. We all have sauce on our collars.
In reply to: [Groups] E-mail Notifications for new forum posts?@D Cartwright I am sure I am confused but isn’t this the same as Boone’s (or ours) group notifications plugin? If it’s diff, please tell me how as I am big into as many notification options as possible. Thanks.
In reply to: Joinless groups?Oz – did you rename all the hard coded links as well (we didn’t properly write the plugin to easily work on any site. We just released a custom function we wrote because people were asking for an example.
If you are still having problems, email me at mike @ mikepratt . tv and I’ll take a look.

@andy is correct. You do not have to copy the template. I did because I wanted the list item to be placed specifically. If you choose not to, it will go at the end of the list. The pro there is that you don’t have to worry about template changes down the road.
You can use bp-sn-parent as your parent for those times when you want to use bp-classic. It’s done in the same manner. Go ahead and leave it in the bp-themes folder and reference as Andy instructs here -> https://codex.buddypress.org/how-to-guides/building-a-buddypress-child-theme/
In reply to: MU 2.9.1 Upgrade … What broke?I’d contact the develper https://buddypress.org/developers/mariusooms/
fyi – the trunk for BP Group Blogs has not had a commit since 12/17 so take that into consideration
In reply to: Spam, Spam and more spamI wholeheartedly agre with @andy. It’s an age old debate between making it as simple as possible to register and become a member and requiring some unique information that not only serves your purpose well but adds an extra layer to the process that fights spam.
We have been running our prod site since BP was in alpha (Nov ’08 – crazy, I know) but have had only 2 spam registrations. Both were from Russia and both seemed pointless. But we banned the domain in the WP backend and have had none since. We have not even changed our signup slug.
That said, we require 5 fields on registration, 3 are drop downs and we don’t allow blog registration (we’re building a community not a blog network)
On a side note: We ran reCaptcha flawlessly for 6 months. We disabled it as an experiment to see if we could avoid that extra step (plus reCaptcha words are damn hard to read) and have not had spam since. fingers crossed.
In reply to: Updating to latest trunk versionEveryone needs to remember that many BP plugins break going from 1.1 to 1.2. This is a small price to pay for all the refactoring done but it means you’ll be better off moving all your old BP plugins out of the plugins folder before getting BP 1.2 smooth and then bring them back in 1 at a time.
Additionally, I have found it quite common that some ftp clients do an incomplete load and reloading the bp files again solves the problem (like @bbrian017’s undefined BP function errors)
@do77 It also does not work in 1.2 Let us know what versions (WPMU, BP, etc) you are working with so we can better guide you
In reply to: Controlling email notifications@alex Andy’s right, but 1st I’d ask….Are hundreds of emails an hour what you expect to be sending out? ie you have hundreds of friend requests, updates, blog posts, etc all being done each hour? If so, 1. God Bless you success If not, then you have a different problem.
although I suppose i could just over-ride all the applied styles and go from there
thanks for clarifying pt 1
re headers: I am building a custom header and need to disable the default header image you provide via that UI. I can’t get rid of the default image and mine is not a matter of uploading a new one. sry for the poor explanation the first time.
@andy All is working fine now. appreciate it. What is your suggested method for removing your custom header functions?
add_custom_image_header( 'bp_dtheme_header_style', 'bp_dtheme_admin_header_style' );I don’t just want to delete them and those are Wp functions you are calling.
I left bp-default in the buddypress dir and used it as a parent so I didn’t have to copy it each time I upgraded the trunk. Works fine.
@andy just a heads up
@import url( ../plugins/buddypress/bp-themes/style.css );yields
domain.com/wp-content/themes/plugins/buddypress/bp-themes/style.cssIn reply to: Controlling email notifications@alexmaximo How many members? My site is pretty active and we built the forum notification plugin (which was trumped by Boone’s much better version!) which sends out emails on every single forum post and reply and we aren’t stressing any servers.
1. Amazing work, guys
2. I can see great usage for communities of people who have a clue what a wiki is and how to best use it
3. Curious on how this great plugin might best be used on a community like mine which is chock full of noobs that need to be lead by hand down every path? My gut tells me they will balk unless I make big fat buttons explaining everything. in fact, I may have to disguise the fact that it’s even a wiki!
@andy in further inspection, I guess you are leaving the entire bp-default folder IN /buddypress/bp-themes instead of moving it into /themes and just leaving it unactivated?
(gathering this from the url you typed above)
@andy Thanks. I had all the style imports except the one you stated
In reply to: Site Wide Activity stream not working@andrea_r I just did a test on my bleeding edge dev instal and got the exact same results. Then onto a test on testbp.org and saw no problem. Either @andy is using a server setting that masks the problems or the rest of us are doing something wrong. As a point of ref, I keep my dev site clean at first to see the default out of the box and this test was on a completely unadulterated install & theme.
