if i’m not wrong, the Full Name has a filter, if you use it, you could replace it with the wp built-in name & last name, or use xprofile fields fot that,

it depends on your php & wp skills

yep for now all developments are stopped,

the best way is to host an irc server and integrate chat in php, i-ve tried it for a projects it worked for groups chat,

another thing that could be done is a thing like a Shoutbox,

no time to work on it in these days,

Using bp-loader is better because a plugin could require some code that is included in a bp component that is switched off.

This will work anyway if bp is switched off and when someone switch on it he will give a redeclaration error
