In reply to: Update permalinks in activity stream
Yup. That article from seomoz.org points out the basics of URL semantics/relevancy and underscores my own convictions on the matter. (“…they are also open to reasoned debate about whether they are right or wrong!”
)Oh, but I DO want a huge huge site! (So performance is an issue.) Therefore, in an attempt to “get” the best of both worlds, my new URL structure is thus:
/%year%/%category%/%postname%/In reply to: Blocks on FrontpageIf I’m not mistaken, I believe you’ve been inspired by http://www.workathomemommies.com/

If you want to learn how to widgetize a page so you can put whatever you want on it, here’s a great tutorial:
http://wpmu.org/how-to-widgetize-a-page-post-header-or-any-other-template-in-wordpress/If you just want to style the appearance of blog posts on your frontpage, you can do that through CSS.
There are any number of great resources and tutorials in the vast wilderness of cyberspace to help you learn what you need to know. To help you identify exactly what you need to change in your theme’s CSS to get the effect you want, I highly recommend installing the Firebug for Firefox addon:

In reply to: Update permalinks in activity streamI agree – of course ensuring that the main keyword is prominent in url, title & description is a good thing; that’s one of the ways SEs determine the relevance of content… and up goes the pagerank
(Otto does come off as being a “bit” opinionated on that point, doesn’t he?)But he does illustrate a valid point about performance and WordPress’ rewrite rules. Here’s an interesting discussion on trac about URL routing, and how to improve same (over my head, but interesting nonetheless):
https://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/12935In reply to: Update permalinks in activity streamThanks for the link to that excellent post by Otto! Very educational reading.
I’ve updated my permalink structure following Otto’s recommendations (and WP’s rules) and guess what… even though activity stream item URLs don`t appear to have changed, the new structure redirects instantly to the proper post.
Thanks again!
In reply to: Where to add a custom js in the code? Here are some good links to get you going:

http://digwp.com/2009/06/including-jquery-in-wordpress-the-right-way/Yes, it is a common issue… and almost always plugin or theme related.
Follow the advice given by @hnla to troubleshoot your install.
Start by deactivating your custom theme to see if that’s the problem.
If not, then deactivate all plugins, and reactivate them one by one to track it down.In reply to: New theme – now availableYes, the theme will support custom menus via the addition of my Add-All-Nav-Links-to-BP-Adminbar plugin.
https://buddypress.org/community/groups/add-all-nav-links-to-bp-adminbar/
http://nowrecovery.com/justfunstuff/add-all-nav-links-to-bp-adminbar/The original idea for this theme, and the reason I’m developing it, was to help make navigation more streamlined for users by combining the adminbar and main nav into a single unit. I released the plugin first, ‘cuz it works just fine with child themes of bp-default. Now I’m working on the theme to go with it. Of course, the theme will work just fine without the plugin, but…
When will it be available to purchase? Hopefully by the end of this month, I’ll have an initial release of the freebie. If all goes well on road tests of that release, the premium should become available by end of November.
In reply to: User Statistics Reporting in Buddypress?Yes, all these things are possible with Buddypress. There are a great many plugins designed specifically for the BP environment that can enable you to build a powerful community. For your specific needs, it may be necessary to do a bit of custom coding, but here are a few examples to get you started:
https://buddypress.org/community/groups/buddypress-auto-group-join/
https://buddypress.org/community/groups/welcome-pack/
https://buddypress.org/community/groups/bp-system-report/Here`s a great example of an academic cummunity built on BP:

In reply to: CSS mystery…Yes: child-theme of bp-default.
child-theme/header calls child-theme/style.css and child-theme/custom.css
child-theme/style.css imports bp-default/style.cssSo if I remove the background property from, say div#container in child-theme/style.css, it gets that background from bp-default. Then if I add the background property to child-theme/custom.css, nothing changes, even with !important added.
Like I say, I’m stumped
In reply to: CSS mystery…Thanks for your suggestion too, but I also tried on my local install with no plugins activated except Buddypress.
I’ll try again tomorrow with a fresh look.In reply to: CSS mystery…Thanks for a quick reply! But alas, your suggestion is to no avail…
I removed the background property from div#container in style.css so it defaults to bp-default/_inc/css/default. Then added background:#eeeeee !important; to div#container in custom.css. Doesn’t change.
I even tried zeroing in on the div from the highest level: body#bp-default #container, but that didn’t work either.
I’m stumped. I really don’t want folks to have to edit style.css
In reply to: I can create a blog but not access itThe “Recent Site Wide Posts” widget pulls the latest posts from a multisite install.
To get the Activity Stream on your front page, go to “Settings” > “Reading” and check Front page displays, then select Activity stream from the dropdown.
In reply to: Buddypress 1.2.6, 2 months late -.-Milestone 1.2.6 had a target date of 08/02/10.
Notice the term “target”.
It happens to us all now and then to miss a target.
Now imagine, if you will, several dozen kind folks collaborating on a huge coding project with input and wild ideas from several HUNDRED others.
In such a scenario, it is highly unlikely that the target date can be met.
Expectations vis-à-vis this community seem to be, to say the least, unrealistic and somewhat unkind. Especially considering that most invest their time and knowledge in projects while asking for nothing in return.
I would suggest you simply keep breathing; 1.2.6 will be available when it`s available.
Meanwhile, 1.2.5 continues to function…In reply to: New theme – now availableThe avatar can be enlarged, sure. But, as with the bp-default theme, clicking any avatar already links to the users profile.
In reply to: Buddyvents – New Events PluginYeah, kinda not cool dude.
Besides, if you’re going to start discussion about a different subject, start a new thread. Otherwise, things get real confusing, real fast!In reply to: Membermap for BuddypressLove the “Powered by…” in the footer – cool site!
In reply to: Is it possible to do this?Install Custom Profile Filters for BuddyPress: https://buddypress.org/community/groups/custom-profile-filters-for-buddypress/
Add a select box to the base field group in your Buddypress profile field setup with the different selections: dj, musician, producer, etc. Make sure this is in the base group so users must select one when registering. Follow the instructions in the plugin to turn each selection into a search link.
When you click on any of the selected labels in a user’s profile, that brings you to the members directory but displays only the users who have also selected the same.
Hope this helps!
In reply to: BuddyPress SpamYou’re very welcome

In reply to: Header image not fitting on siteThis is the header image I see on my laptop PC. Same image whether running Firefox, IE or Chrome. Is it the correct image?
In reply to: Header image not fitting on siteWhat theme are you using?
Could you post a link?In reply to: BuddyPress SpamNow that is a brilliantly simple and effective tactic that I’m adding to my arsenal!
1 – Phew!
2 – Cool!
3 – Umm… no more for now
In reply to: Activity Stream Design LayoutThe activity stream already groups conversations. The items are simply being displayed in a single column.
Modifying the display can be achieved through css.If you want to want to play around with it to mimic what you see on tv.adobe.com, start by adding the following to “ul.activity-list li”
float:left;
width:300px;
height:200px;Then work on the inner nested divs to get stuff looking awesome!
Before making actual changes to your style.css file, use the Firebug for Firefox addon to play around and test. It helps zero in on what you want to change to achieve to effect you’re looking for.
