In reply to: BuddyPress Future w/o MVC: Big Deal?
@DJPaul – I was just taking that Anahita tone a bit further with the “patch job” wording, because that social engine seemed to imply that it would be better than anything out there, including BP (which I find phenomenal), just because it had an MVC architecture
Not sure about the importance of having an MVC in place when you’re building something as big as this, but from what Peterverkooijen says, it does seem somewhat useful to a certain extent. On some level, it’s interesting to put this conversation into the limelight and see what people think — competition breeds competitiveness and better products
IMHO, BP definitely has the most steam behind it and the new groups_new_group_extension() sounds promising, as well, so I’d love to see BP become something so grand that it could prove having an MVC isn’t as crucial as Anahita WebDevs suggest.
In reply to: Anybody get Forums to work on Media Temple DV?alright, got into SSH, which prompted this screen…
-bash-3.1$then, i typed in the stuff below and hit enter..
/etc/hostswhich returned this…
Permission deniednot really sure if that was even the right thing to start with, but any more info which you could provide would definitely help me. sorry for asking for these baby steps. i usually try to come in contact with any server-related issues; i’m more into copy writing/design.
In reply to: Anybody get Forums to work on Media Temple DV?Thanks Burt
I know I PMed you about this, but I figure if there are other ppl on an MT box, they could chime in as well. Would you mind explaining how you edited your host file? I mean, really dumb it down, haha. For starters, do you do this in SSH or have tech support do it for you?
In reply to: Share This not Workingmaybe try using the advanced excerpt plugin + exec-php so that you can call the script through the sharethis php tags, because i think the default excerpt strips everything to only show plain text.
In reply to: Members Page About me, InfoGo to My Blogs (Admin Dashboard) >> BuddyPress (bottom left column) >> Profile Field Setup >> Add New Field (or Group)
In reply to: Cannot change profile dataare you using a caching plugin by any chance?
In reply to: Blog post not showing up in bloghey derek – did you just fix this? i can see all your blog posts at the /blog link you provided, although i’m seeing a bunch of short tags (for videos, i’m assuming) instead of the actual content.
change the background element for the stuff below in your base.css
/*** LEFT COLUMN **********/
#left-column .widget h2, .narrowcolumn h2.widgettitle {
background: url(../images/leftcol_header_back.gif) top left no-repeat;
}
In reply to: CSS / 100% width of yellow top ?you’d actually have to muck around with the code a bit, because it *would* just be changing #search-login-bar width to 100%, but since it’s wrapped inside the body container which has a max width of 1300px, changing the body width to 100% would expand the entire content area — something which i’m not sure you’d really want. so really, you’d have to edit the header.php file and probably move some elements around first, then do the css later.
In reply to: Overwrite avatar size from bp-theme functionyou could always just do this with some css… save you some bandwidth
In reply to: Import User to BPfrom what i remember there is no automated way of doing it other than to export/import them manually. there is, however, a wp bp version that’s being worked on, which might make the migration a bit more manageable, but i’m not sure what the webdev roadmap is like for that.
In reply to: BP Messaging Questionthis post might help you answer some of your questions… https://buddypress.org/forums/topic.php?id=3204
In reply to: Move admin bar to the bottom?you can probably use this as a guide… i’d do it for you but it’s quite a bit of work to restyle everything
In reply to: BuddyPress Kills WordPress ThemesThat’s odd. Have you tried upgrading manually?
Oh man… that sounds like a mammoth of a project. Here’s the dealbreaker, though — and I speak from personal experience — if you’ve already got something else running in your root directory, it’s not gonna work. And it actually says so in the WPMU readme file…
“If you want subdomain blogs, you must use the root of your site.”
Assuming you didn’t have anything installed in your root, I’m pretty sure there’s no plugin/patch job that exists yet to hook up multiple installations of BuddyPress so that a single user could hop around from site to site. I suppose if they registered every time with the same username/password, they could just rely on the “saved password” feature most browsers already have — but that’s probably not what you’re looking for.
In reply to: How do I send an email to all members?How about just sending the message to yourself and checking off “This is a notice to all users.” Otherwise, I’d probably try the Sitewide newsletters plugin, as well. But if you really want to regularly spread and market newsworthy information, I’d def recommend something like MailChimp — http://www.mailchimp.com/features/ — since that has more of a CRM backend with some analtyics to improve on those mass emails.
In reply to: Is BuddyPress for me?Your welcome
Well, in that case… you might want to check out Ning for a complete hassle-free solution. I think all you have to do is point your domain to it and style it within Ning.com. You’re kinda stuck with the whole layout and functionality but this might be the answer to what you want to build. Here’s a good example of what you can do with it… http://www.urijahfaber.com/
In reply to: statcounter plugin – wp_footer adequate?oh you guys, please use Google Analytics!! i’ve seen some really inflated numbers with statcounter… probably because you can log in as the admin and actually *define* the “number of page views” you want to start out with (seriously, what’s that about??)! GA is much more accurate and granular. And it’s free, too. AND there are a handful of plugins for that, as well. http://yoast.com/wordpress/google-analytics/
In reply to: authentication emails going to spam folderoff the top of my head, the only idea i have would be to include a little blurb about checking junk mail/setting up a filter prior to signing up. i’ve seen some services do this usually in big bold letters.
In reply to: How do I add a new Blog with buddypress themeif you’d want members’ blogs to have that same look as the main news blog (if i’m understanding correctly), you’d have to create a third theme for your members’ blogs…. but you could def reuse lots of elements from the bp home theme to create it. so you have 3 themes: 1) bp home, 2) bp members, 3) bp members default blog — and you would probably have to rename that theme “default” since each members’ blog uses that theme upon setup. again, hopefully i understood your question correctly.
In reply to: 3 columns theme in one columnhere’s another link that might help you out with the basics…

In reply to: Is BuddyPress for me?BuddyPress runs on WPMU, so you can run most WP plugins your BP installation including Akismet or whatever other spam plugin(s) you’re using — that would take care of the blogs. As far as spam coming from actual registered users, that could be another issue. I wouldn’t anticipate this becoming a big problem in the first place, because a BP user has to register (get an email) and then confirm (get another email) registration before getting started to spam anybody. By the time that *could* happen and BP user John Doe decides to spam link everybody on the Wire and elsewhere, you as the admin could just suspend/delete his account. I’d say go for it. I love this system the moment and wrote a lengthy comparison between BP and another system, Elgg, here… http://www.michaelkuhlmann.com/category/buddypress/elgg-vs-buddypress/
There’s also another social networking system out there for Joomla called Anahita, in case you’re interested. Hope this helps!
Yeah, that was more of dirty quick fix
You’d probably want to have a container for those three bottom cells, but that’d require you to mess with your footer.php file, too. Glad to hear you like Firebug. That’s probably my fav add-on for FF
In reply to: Slimbox Not Working ??? please helphave you tried this one yet? http://www.pedrolamas.com/projectos/jquery-lightbox-en/
In reply to: thumbs, medium, large, full size => helpnever really tried this but you might be able to get rid of it by setting that specific avatar class to “display: none” in your stylesheet. it’s a bit late over here, so my brain’s half fried, but go ahead and give it a whirl
