    Anyone that can make an ordinairy wordpress template, can make a bbpress template, their theming is almost the same.

    @ fzeidan

    Ok, will go into that direction then. Sounded like the best option in my opinion as well.

    @gasparking

    You mean the behance network website? And when Brajesh releases his bp gallery software for free, I’ll build in support for it in my themes. :)

    @21cdb: Milestone 1.3+ hasn’t been placed on that roadmap, so a lot of ideas and features are still behind the scenes. But Andy told multiple times that it was going to get into the core, be it now or later..

    Just an update, decided to go through with the buddybook theme. Though, I’m wondering whether I should take out all blog functions and totally copy facebook right now. Any suggestions? (For example making the frontpage like facebook and not like a blog.)

    Also, I just bought BPninja.com. This will be the site I will sell my themes on and do the rest of my buddypress blogging etc.

    Buddypress (actually wordpress entirely) works bad on Windows. For example, windows doesnt have mod_rewrite, which is a neccesity for Buddypress.

    Switch back to a LAMP environment. Or find a really good coder that wants to re-program wordpress for a Windows environment.

    You can’t install bbpress in the “forums” folder if you enable buddypress group forums, since buddypress will then use “forums” as its permalink for its build in group forums.

    Maybe install the standard bbpress in a “forum” folder?

    Old theme, if I’m right it doesn’t work with the newer buddypress anymore.

    @ David: Fun way to say no to IE, but still more than the half of the web users, use Internet Explorer, so not really an option in my opinion. You could use both though, the javascript for IE and the css method for the other browsers.

    Actually that’s a bad idea, if someone has it’s javascript turned off for some reason, it won’t have that extra class. It’s better to code it into your forms. Also, make a ticket in the trac for this, sounds like an easy fix. Will make it easier for designers to style their forms in the future.

    Looks great, will try building this in my own theme theme as well. :)

    Thanks!

    Pretty old skool.

    But no, there aren’t any plugins that do this. Shouldn’t be so hard though, just need to make some simple database calls.

    Possible? Yes. After all, everythings possible.

    Try this.

    define ( 'BP_ENABLE_MULTIBLOG', true );

    I haven’t tried this myself, and not sure what it exactly does, but the codex says that this allows buddypress to function on multiple blogs of a WPMU installation.

    I could see why that wouldnt work, as buddypress is build on wpmu and every blog you make is basicly a seperate wordpress install. So for example the users that were automatically subscribers on your wpmu blog aren’t automatically subscribers on all the blogs on your wpmu install.

    WordPress itself has problems with relocating it’s position, a lot of changes need to be made and since buddypress is build on wordpress, buddypress has these problems now as well.

    I don’t really get why your placing buddypress in a sub blog, you can easily change the buddypress theme to your liking if that’s the problem.

    @xevo

    It’s probably a glitch, and a bad one. Try re-installing and make sure you have sub directories selected when installing. If it goes back to subdomains again, try checking for any errors in logs or on the page itself.

    If all else fails, go to the wpmu forums, and ask your question there.

    Just need to add the core wordpress function to list the pages into the buddypress theme and it should show your newly added pages to the main menu.

    Seeing how big (in users and content) deviantArt is and how “easy” it is to use, I would give up on making such a website. Even if you come with a better concept or a better UI, they’ll notice you and build their own even better. It’s a war you cannot win. Just like it’s impossible for Bing to ever beat Google.

    What you could do is make such a site for a specific user group or specific country and see how that works, here (netherlands) we still have a social network that is used more then facebook and those users wont jump over to facebook anytime soon either. That network (hyves) is only based on the Dutch people and is most likely therefore still more populair.

    If your website start growing and users show interest, then you can think about building your site bigger and better then the big bad competitors.

    Like all populair sites, start small and see where it goes.

    At least leave the friending as an option please, first wire is taken away and now friends? I believe friends are a core element of a good social network, unless rebuilding twitter you don’t have to follow someone (@matt kern), build a plugin if you want such a feature.

    @ Erich73

    Lets replicate real life, instead of creating artificial behaviour.

    Social networking isn’t real life! Are we working towards making everyone lazy bastards who don’t even step away from their computer? Besides, in real life you call people friends/colleagues/partners when you don’t even know them that well, so is that really that different? In fact you can find out more about a person through a social network then you can by just talking to them.

    You meet people through friends and meet even more through those friends, isn’t that what a social network is for?

    If friending gets taken out in 1.3, then I’ll stay with Buddypress 1.2.

    @ Andrea: I’ll think about it, though if I choose to make it a free theme, I’ll release it somewhere in march (don’t have that much free time on my hands). :)

    @xevo

    The latest buddypress 1.2 default theme has this built in, it uses a custom wp_list_comments template callback. It’s really easy to do. Just google if you want to know more.

    bp_core_get_userlink( $comment->user_id );

    Use that in your comment template and you’ll get a link including anchors to your buddypress profile.

    YouGo is close to finishing, but since I’m already building it for the new buddypress 1.2 and basing it off the new default theme (which is changing all the time right now), I won’t release any theme till 1.2 is stable. Building a theme for Buddypress 1.1.3 right now would be a waste of time.

    I also will rethink the buddybook theme, since the guys over at wpmu-dev already made a buddypress theme based of the facebook theme.

    Sorry to the people that are waiting on these, you’ll have to wait a bit longer.

    It should work on the normal user blogs, the main blog (with bp functions) is gonna need some adjustments though.

    https://buddypress.org/demo/

    If you want to run a site like those examples, your probably gonna need at least a virtual dedicated server. Not sure what exact serverspecs you need though, it’s more based on how many users your expecting.

    @nzde: The error is saying that one of the buddypress functions can’t be found. You sure you activated buddypress in the admin panel?

    @xevo

    Participant

    Check your logs, probably some unseen error popping up somewhere.

    De-installing buddypress after installing is impossible right now (unless you exactly know what buddypress adds to your wpmu install). This is a problem with a lot of plugins.

    @ pcwriter: Did you remove the kubrick theme from your theme folder (standard wordpress theme). I had the same problem a while back, solved it by placing the kubrick theme back in the themes folder.
