There’s a nice plugin for this.
@ Arghagain: No, I just made a clean install of Wpmu 2.8.5.2, Buddypress 1.1.2 and even a stand alone integrated BBpress 1.0.2. So no problems there.
Shouldnt this be closed, since there’s already a new topic of the newer version?
I found a solution to this problem of mine in a VERY easy way.
I made a second blog for my admin called encyclopedia, then uploaded the plugin “wp wiki” by instinct. Then I went to “Site Admin > Blogs > Back end” and activated the plugin on the encyclopedia blog. Now I have the wiki plugin on this blog only and it works fine.
The only thing left to do is make a template for this blog. And it’ll look like its part of the rest of the site (I don’t use the buddybar).
For all those others that are looking for an easy way to make a wiki/encyclopedia. Try this.
IE6 should just go to hell, if your so worried, put a IE6 notice for them to install Google Chrome. Much easier than to try fiddling with it?
If you are wanting to work it out, check out firebug lite, which works in IE. It’s probably the double margin float bug.
Well, I’m only interested in the edit function and like I said, simplicity is the way to go. I’m already just using pages and sub pages for my current setup.
But I’ll try recreating it myself. When will the future version (3.0) be released, this year? If not, then I cannot wait for that to come around.
Thanks for the help though, hearing that it’s just a blog on the wpmu system, lets me know that I dont have to install a standalone wordpress to accomplish this.
If someone has suggestions on how to do the edit function or still is willing to make a plugin, please let me know.
Better would be to use, the lite version (since this is already configured with buddypress), but if your looking for the old forums way, then you’ll have to install bbpress seperately and tweak it to get the buddypress looks.
I personally have both groups and normal forums, now I’m looking for a way to get the buddypress functions in bbpress.
If you know some basics in php/html and css you can easily change the buddybar into the digg bar. I myself don’t use the buddybar, so I don’t really care for it.
This might help you further.

And why take the social out of a social community plugin..?
Your theme colors made my eyes hurt..
Sounds like an interesting project though, nicely done.

Btw, isn’t it just called a portfolio website..?
Nice, I can really use this. Since I’m probably going to use zips/rars/torrent files a lot in the forums.
Thanks!
I personally like the wpmu buddypress templates of Milo (3oneseven.com), these probably aren’t beginner class, but they still are awesome.

I’m using the template “Bruce” right now as a reference for my own buddypress community.
Had the same problem with an older buddypress template (deprecated template) on a new buddypress release. Gave me a 404 even when I used either of the forum installs. Then when I used the newest release of the template it worked fine. So yes, its most likely the same problem.
Why not just take an existing template that works and edit that? As far as I know there shouldn’t be any major changes on templates anymore.
Welcome to the world of front-end web design. It sucks.
Yeah, they (Andy) made Buddypress in a really weird never before seen way, I had too hack my whole theme to just get it back to normal. Your idea sounds great as well, about the advanced and simple blog option, if they hook it, then you could even make the advanced blog a VIP (paid) only option.
But let’s not get ahead of ourselves, I’m not that good of a coder, so for me this is impossible, the fact that your asking for someone to make a plugin, suggests that your not a hardcore coder either. So we’ll just have to hope that someone reads this and wants to help.

Anyway, back on topic..
“Add a global header to EVERY blog in your WPMU install (by default the global header isn’t activated on the mainblog) with adding your own HTML and CSS.”
So, plug and play as far as I can see, you can even use PHP in it if you’d like. Not sure how well it’ll work together with Buddypress, but it should show a bar on top of every blog.
Sounds interesting to me, but the only add you made is the “favorites” on the bar, other than that you can already use that plugin (global header).
I’m personally working towards removing the blogs fully and just give each member 1 blog on their normal profile page, that way you just have everything of a member on one page, without the option of themes and making more than 1 blog. Basicly the same as any social community works (facebook for example). I’m also looking for a way for members to change the look and feel of their profile page, so that they can differentiate a little from the rest (background, colors etc.). But that’s just me rambling..
I’m working on a solution for this as well, and I made it very easy for myself, I made a category called wiki and made my subcategories for the wiki in there. Than I placed the wiki pages in that category and made sure that everything in there isn’t able to show up in any listing.
It’s a very easy solution, and you can even make a different layout for the posts in the wiki category.
Though, I am still looking for a way for users to make posts and/or edit posts in these categories and how I can moderate those posts easily.
I am also curious about what the difference is between using an existing install and using one by the buddypress rules.
Will I keep a normal forum and will I get the group forums if I use an existing install or will it convert a normal forum to group forums only like the one click install does?
Fix worked for me, thanks Detective.
Btw, shouldn’t this have shown up in the demo as well? Or is the demo slightly different?
DB Cache and WP Super Cache could help, not sure if they work with WPMU + BP.
And even if they would, you have 2 make sure that they wont cache member pages or active topics.
I kinda think this looks weird/bad too, I love the standard way of communities too just focus on what you just clicked. I’ve been trying to find a solution to get rid of those 3 columns. But nothing so far.
I did saw a site a few weeks ago that looked like facebook while being build on buddypress. Would be nice if buddypress changes to this or at least provides an option to do this.
Edit: I found something great, http://3oneseven.com/08/bruce/. These buddypress themes are exactly what I’m looking for. I can’t test them right now, but if they work with the newest buddypress then this would be a solution for me.
