BP Album+ || New Features Requests and Discussion
-
If you need a free image gallery or photo album for BuddyPress, BP Album+ is probably the plugin you’re looking for. BP Album+ adds instant, FaceBook style photo albums to all of your user’s profiles.
You can always get the most up-to-date version from the WordPress plugin repository at this link:
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bp-album/
Or, if you like living on the bleeding-edge of BuddyPress development, you can get the latest beta here:

======
This forum thread is for discussing new features the community would like to see in future releases of the BP Album+ plugin.
All ideas are welcome, no matter how crazy, bandwidth-intensive, or strange …but the final call on what goes into the plugin and when will be made by the development team.
Photos and user interfaces are a uniquely “visual” thing, so when posting an idea to this thread, please try to include a LINK to a website that’s doing the thing you want included in the plugin. For original functions that don’t exist *anywhere* yet, draw a sketch of your idea in a paint program and post a link to the image.
This will make it much easier for users that don’t speak English to understand your idea.
So, Let’s get started!

I really like to follow your development and i raelly appriciate how transparent you’re keeping the developmet and how much your are listining to the demands of us users.
Keep it up this way!
I wrote a short user story:
1) An administrator: I would like to see all albums even if they set to private or not. I would like to hide pictures with inappropriate content. They shouldn’t be visible for site members anymore, but the owner should see them darkened out with a message overlaying the picture “This picture was removed due to inappropriate content” – something like this.
2) An anonymous user off the Internet: Should only be able to see the “public” pictures.
3) A logged-in member viewing their own profile: Should have an Main Menu Item “Albums” or even better “Photos” that shows all of his pictures and all pictures of his friends (newest Uploads on top – so they can easily discover whats new). There should be an “Upload Photos” button on this page (After clicking you will be ask if you would like to upload a single picture or if you would like to create an album). The Page should also hold a subnav with some Options as “Photos of my friends – Photos i’m tagged on – My uploaded Photos – Upload Photos”
4) A logged-in member viewing a friend’s profile: Should have an Main Menu Item “Albums/Photos” with all of the photos uploaded by “John Doe” and a subnav with “Photos John Doe is tagged on”.
5) A logged-in member viewing a stranger’s profile: Should have an Main Menu Item “Albums/Photos” with all public pictures the “stranger” uploaded.
I was also thinking of pictures uploaded to groups. I guess it should be enough if there would be an “Album/Photos” Menu Item in the mainnav of the group. This page should hold all group pictures and an “Upload Photos” button.
That should be enough for the beginning.
add a share button to twitter and facebook when in album is public mode. For user to share there photos!
Group photos should just be an extension of your own albums. During the upload process you should have the option to add that photo to a group.
Why upload the same image twice?
Think flickr groups >> group pool. I think this is where your tagging method will come in to play.
or the photos you uploaded to a group could atomagically appear on your album as “Group Name – Album”.
Why should a user go back to his profile if he is allready on the groups page and wants to upload a picture to that group?
You right 21cdb…I do think a dropdown would be helpful at the profile uploading screen to at it to a certain group pool. But yes, within the group it should also be possible to add straight to the pool.
@21cdb yup, that too. Groups and profile really are the same upload. When your at a group and you upload it auto adds (tags) it for that group. If your on your profile it asks for you to add (tag) to a group.
Thank you for take part in the development of bp-album with your ideas and suggestion.
on group album: so you think it should not be possible to upload a pic only to a group (like on facebook)?
I committed a new version (0.1.7) that has no new features (they will come in the 0.2 version we are working on), it fix the problem described in the “plugin hall of shame” thread.
@xevo: yes it will be possible to disable new features. I understand that in a lot of sites some feature are unneeded.
@gpo1: share button is a feature that you can add in a custom template, it probably will never be added in the plugin.
@foxly/@francescolaffi I will review and add to the excellent user story submissions to date. Just uploaded the .1.7 patch. A few observations that i’m not sure have been mentioned:
1. I just added a desc to my 1st picture and noticed punctuation is being escaped (can provide a look on my dev site if you like)
2. Commenting on pictures works but adds no entry to the Activity stream.
This is testing against a bp-default theme (altho also present on my own theme)
Drive on, Soldier!
My thoughts on the group vs profile pictures, sorry if I get rambling too much.
First, if I upload a picture, I want to ensure that I am explicitly recognized as the owner of that picture (I’m assuming that people are only going to be uploading their own works). It shouldn’t matter where I upload that picture on the site, it should always have a link into my profile. Since we don’t want to duplicate pictures in the site and having multiple URLs that point to the same content is considered bad, why not just always have pictures in linked in the user’s profile album.
As for groups. Yes, being able to upload directly from the group page is a nice idea. The tagging system previously described by you guys should be used here for sure. I think Flickr sort of makes it hard on this aspect because you can tag photos but you can also put photos into a group. That seems like an extra step to me. Use the tags to represent the group. For example, if you have a group called “The Photogs”, just tag all pictures uploaded from that group page with “The Photogs” (of course, make sure the user is aware of this and allow them to remove the tag if desired, etc.). This would require two things – your tagging system sort of needs to know all of the groups on the system and it then also needs to ensure people aren’t tagging their pictures with a tag that is also a group name when they don’t mean to (‘Are you sure you want to tag this picture to belong to the group “The Photogs”‘). Of course, this could allow users to ‘uncover’ hidden groups but I’m not sure that’s a big deal.
Coming back to the first point, picture ownership. At some point you’re going to have to add some way for people to assign a license to their uploads. Most sites can get away with something in their terms of usage that is a blanket statement but some will have to allow their users full control over licensing of pictures. Creative Commons (like Flickr) is easiest.
The reason I mention this is we’re talking about mostly public pictures on public websites.
Public vs private is also a concern when allowing people to tag their pictures or upload them to a group. If a picture is uploaded to a public group, it can’t be set as a private picture. If the group is private, does the picture have to still be public? There might be some interesting combinations.
And now for something a little different – Privacy.
A user should always have full control of their pictures. A user should also be able to permanently remove their username if it is tagged against a picture (like Facebook person tagging). Users should be notified when they are tagged in pictures and it might also be better to require them to approve themselves being tagged in a picture before the tag is visible publicly. Users should only be able to tag people who they are friends with. Maybe people who are in the same groups, but definitely not any random user on the site.
@francescolaffi I think there should be an upload dialog on the groups page but I think it should just be an extension of a users albums. When they upload the image gets placed in an album on a users profile called “group photos” and gets tagged to a group.
This way we can see who owns a photo.
Awesome, foxly, thanks for the help with Links — did you let MrMaz know?
Hello pictures addict
here’s the fr_FR translation for 0.1.7 of bp-album+
http://bp-fr.net/wp-content/blogs.dir/1/files/group-documents/24/1270141787-languages-fr_FR.zip
A little error on line 156 in bp-album-admin.php currently prevents a correct translation. Replace the word ‘buddypress’ by ‘bp-album’ in the line and it would be ok.
Salut !
Hi,
I really like this plugin, one little thing I’d like is to have the order that images appear on the page reversed so that the last one uploaded appears first on the page.
Thanks.
Is it possible to embed an album in a blog post or on a blog page? Like a Gallery?
Most of the Gallery and Slideshow plugins are WAY too complicated for the casual user to use. And it doesn’t make sense for a blogger to have to track pictures in two places.
If there was a simple way to insert an album and a couple of sleek display options, this would dominate…
@gregfielding – What you’re describing is called “short code” functionality, and we’re building it in to the next release.
It lets you embed an media item or album into a blog post using a tag like [album id=”kittens” size=”medium”].
When you embed a media album, it embeds the album’s cover item in the post. Clicking on the image takes you to the actual album page.
For the time being, users are only allowed to embed their own content. Otherwise it gets rather complicated in terms of who is allowed to embed content that belongs to which user, and what kinds of content a given user is allowed to embed.
For example, consider what would happen if a user was friends with another user allowing them to see a private album the other user owned, and then the first user embedded content from the other user’s private album in one of their blog posts.

New Dutch translation, have fun! Let me know when I can start on the new one.
@foxly – Whats the time frame on the next plugin update? Really looking forward to it!
@Xevo – Thanks!
@connor-mccarra – Maybe later today, maybe tomorrow. I’m debugging the albums component at the moment.

InactiveFirst would like to say development team is doing a great job.
My feature requests are mostly for the user
1. ability to set a photo in album to Users profile photo(avatar). Or maybe a profile picture album like Facebook. So user can have multiple photos that they can set to their avatar.
2. ability to rearrange order of photos.Facebook allows drag and drop of photos. I believe they use java for that part.
3. Ability to Upload multiple photos. Most users who create an album will have multiple photos to upload.
An update from my installation:
I have waited for BP Albu to get on the “high five list†so I could update BudyPress and BP Album at the same time, finally when I saw that happened, I upgraded them both. What happened is that all of the images that had no existing comments had the commenting turned off, even though when you go to edit picture the form says the commenting is on. It is only after you save the form that you get the ability to comment on an image.
Also the quotes are being escaped in the titles (not sure about the descriptions) and you can’t save an image with a single or double quote as it returns an error.
I don’t know if these issues are known, I thought I’d better post them here.
On a side note, what is the best way to handle custom languages? I have made some changes to the default english translation just to rename some things e.g. pictures → images, etc. Now that I have upgraded my .po and .mo files are gone.
If it’s possible, can we please have multiple image uploads available in the next release? Hopefully it’s coming up soon enough. Very grateful for this wonderful open plugin. Thanks.
@dragonbabic
sorry I don’t understand the commenting issue, if you can describe how to reproduce it please open a topic here https://wordpress.org/tags/bp-album
for custom strings recently djpaul wrote this post on his blog http://byotos.com/2010/04/hijacking-wordpress-internationalisation/ . Hope it helps
Can you make the plugin mobile friendly for iphone & android phones to display easily ?
@Gpo1: I guess thats something you have to do in your custom theme and not the plugin itself? Or what do you mean with “mobile friendly” ?
