    Depending of your theme;

    Normally widgets are activable on the widget page. And some theme have their own widget activable from their own settings page.

    Hi@evo252,

    in the BP 1.0 branch there was a CSV based country field in xprofile.
    https://buddypress.trac.wordpress.org/browser/branches?order=name#1.0/bp-xprofile/prebuilt-fields

    Take a look in the code and see if you can build something for 1.6.4 or 1.7.

    Since 2008, Google Map became a must have. And IMO it’s a better geoloc tool as a simple city/country dropdown witch only prevent end users from having to write themselves the name of their city and their country….
    Doing this is much more complicated as you think. Over 160 countries on earth and millions of cities. What kind of server do you need to just store these informations and to make them work together ?

    Typing country and city is the same effort as typing name and first name for the end user. Let them write and use something powerfull, existent and easy to use and show AND effort less for you too.

    Spare your time and made it simple so far ! 😉
    Give this plugin a try: https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bp-user-profile-map/

    Or search another map plugin : https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/search.php?q=map

    hi @mcgrafx,

    I sympathize with your state of mind. That said you learned a lot for yourself and developped for other in the same time. Altogether this gives a few mounth of work.
    Now you want to be paid for the dev part of this long time.
    How much do you need to live each mounth ? How many time do you have to work in the nearest plant to gain this amount ? Or the nearest backery or what you are able to do in some other activity branch ?
    What is the mid salary in your country and compare to your monthly needs. Add 10 or 15% depending on your quality of experience and divide by the # of hours you take to develop the project. (not to learn or test)

    This will give you the minimum to charge to your client for a first retain, i think. I agree with Jeff’s advices too.
    Based on my own experience, speculating about a client’s richness is vain. Lehmann &Brothers also haved many future millions business in mind. where are they now ?
    Thinking that a client will pay you if he is not contractually engaged is vain (why did you say My client is rich, but a penny pincher ?) Oh ! Only a penny pincher ? Why not sharks or vulture investors ? 😀

    Because i don’t know where you are, i won’t give you advice about charging. You’re now in the game, and it’s poker ! And don’t be afraid, the first time it seems difficult, but if your client is a wise businessman he will pay you before you drop your last card.

    hi@km-schafer-1,

    will I have trouble upgrading down the road when the stable version of 1.7 is released?
    No, normally not, but only if your upgradable install is working correctly.

    Seems to me that isn’t the case actually. 🙁

    You deleted the bp tables, ok, but what about wp_options, wp_postmeta, wp_usermeta ? These tables contains also some BP, bbp related infos.  Did you wipped them out too ? Probably not !

    For example, a BP 1.6.x install with group forums activated use 7 tables for bbPress.
    if you upgrade to 1.7 with the bbPress 2.2.4 plugin, these tables are no more used. All topics are then stored in wp_posts, and associated to usermeta, postmeta…. If you downgrade as you did, you only bring some confusion into the Core management. Some ables are here, some there, other are missed and the existing don’t know what to do…. Ennoying isn’t it ?

    So you “hard” downgraded to 1.6.4 and you encounter some trouble. That’s quite “normal” in fact. 😀

    So what ?

    If you have nothing important on your DB/site, i would recommand that you erase the whole DB (make a dump to save your post evtl.) and start a fresh new install of WP and BP. 3.5.1 and BP 1.6.4 if you go to production or 1.7 beta and bbPress 2.3 beta2 if you only want to play on a test site. (with all the inconvenients coming with a beta install 😉 )

    A little tip: once your install is created on the DB, if you encounter some trouble with themes or plugins or any other changes you did, there’s no need to erase tables if you (absolutly) want to re-install.

    In this case, you deactivate first (to cut DB dependencies) the theme, the plugin or anything else witch you think is affected by something going wrong. And you delete via FTP wp-config.php if you want to reinstall wp. bb-config.php if you want to reinstall bbPress, and delete or rename the concerned plugin or theme folder.

    Commonly, when something is going wrong:
    – check first PBCK ! (we’re all only humans….) and read the codex and some precious other source such this forum or google around to see if you’re the only one on this planet to have this trouble. Generally you’re not alone. 😉
    – rewind what you did before the desease and go back to the point where things went well.
    – keep in mind that the first install only create a DB structure and less content.
    – keep in mind that config files adding some important settings informations in various tables.
    – then YOU create the first DB content: generally some settings, later some posts, pages, categories, etc.
    – plugins sometimes create their own tables, but their settings are mostly written in other tables too.(especially in wp_options, and on a netowrk, in each concerned blog wp_blogID_options)
    – MySql is a relational database. Deleting a table by ignoring the others is rarely the best solution…

    Apologize for this long answer.

    Hi @hsutliff,

    try by adding this to your theme functions.php
    remove_filter( ‘bp_get_the_profile_field_value’,  ‘wpautop’ );

    If you want to know all filters used on xprofile, simply read the file /bp-xprofile/bp-xprofile-filters.php

    Does one enable define ( ‘bp_enable_multiblog’ true ) prior to BP installation or directly afterward, or does it not matter.

    Doesn’t matter. BP is a plugin who went on a single or on a network enabled WP install. bbPress also.

    Should one network enable BP & bbPress upon installation or not?

    see previous answer. If your network is activated, you see under each installed plugin in your network admin the activation link who says “network activate”. Remeber also that with network activated, you have two dashboard as super-admin. One is your main blog and a single WP admin, the other one is the network admin where your BP and bbPress plugins are/should be installed.

    I have followed The Definitive Guide To BuddyPress & bbPress Configuration

    This (good) tutorial was updated for bbPress 2.2+ and BuddyPress 1.6.1+ But time and things changes rapidly on the WP Planet….

    Actually we have 1.6.4 and we are close to 1.7 ! It’s better you read here:
    https://codex.buddypress.org/user/setting-up-a-new-installation/installing-group-and-sitewide-forums/
    Be aware with the group forum page slug and the bbP plugin forum page slug – this is really important.

    Before you came accross with new questions, can you please indicate your BP/WP version and your main blog theme name & version ? Or much better, your site url ?

    – What you need to know about WordPress MU : https://mu.wordpress.org/

    – While using WP 3.5.1 you can activate a network by adding define multisite=true into wp-config.
    Aside, you have two possibilities: sub-folder sites (hxxp://example.com/my_second_site/ or sub-directory site (my_second_site.example.com/) This choice need a wildcard on your host DNS. Both need also some consequent storage capabilities and preferably a VPS/VPN/dedicated server.
    – The main site is where WP is installed (normally at the root > hxxp://example.com/wp-content, etc)

    – Now you install BP and give your members the possibility to create a blog (or not, and you create them yourself). Those blogs will appear on the BP Blog Directory. Each blog has his own admin interface and individual settings and theming. From the main blog you have to allow or not some of these settings and themes/plugins

    – <cite>BP Root Blog and for what purpose?</cite> defining a root blog gives priority to the designed blog over other blogs, activities and different other informations (i.e  latest post in the latest post widget) Secondary blog posts will only appear in the site wide activity and on their own sidebar, if the latest post widget is set (for example).

    BP shows only a community style template sytem (over some customised components), but it is WP who manage the network.

    i recommand you to read the WP codex:
    https://codex.wordpress.org/Create_A_Network
    https://codex.wordpress.org/Multisite_Network_Administration

    also test a fully operationnal BP install on http://testbp.org/ to try to undestand how all this works. 🙂

    Yes, in fact there is only one ToolBar. The “old” BP toolbar is deactivated by default. FYI, login/registering is WP stuff 😀

    Hi,

    don’t know if this will help you, but @imath published a quick fix intended for premium themes.
    Original post here (sorry it’s in french): http://imathi.eu/2013/02/21/une-buddypress-1-7-theme-story/

    Add this to the theme functions.php

    <code>function quick_fix_bp_theme_not_1_7_ready() {
    remove_action( ‘bp_after_setup_theme’, ‘bp_load_theme_functions’, 1 );
    }
    add_action( ‘after_setup_theme’, ‘quick_fix_bp_theme_not_1_7_ready’, 9 );</code>

    To understand a little what’s going on with the new BP 1.7 theme compat idea, read here, even if it’s intended for plugins at least.

    https://codex.buddypress.org/theme-compatibility/how-to-enjoy-bp-theme-compat-in-plugins/

    Feedback would be greatly appreciated 😀

    hi @ryanmt,

    you can change “link directory” from within the language file:
    bp-links/languages/buddypress-links-xx_XX.po (safe method – xx is your language prefix)

    or from within the template file ( ! this will be overriden at next update )
    bp-links/themes/bp-links-default/index.php:8
    <code><h3><?php _e( ‘Links Directory’, ‘buddypress-links’ ) ?></code>

    Hi,

    have you completly deleted the pages ? Puting pages to the trash is not enough, you have to empty the trash too.

    Can you please indicate the theme version ?
    The theme name let’s suppose it’s a premium theme. This generally means that the theme is shipped with customer support.
    Have you asked there first ?

    hi ronnie @jackalo9,
    there is probably a css/js conflict somewhere. Update your BP first and see if things goes better.
    At this time, you use an old version of BP or at least an old bp-default theme !

    Your page source code indicate this:
    /wp-content/plugins/buddypress//bp-themes/bp-default/_inc/global.js?ver=20110818

    On BP 1.6.4, you would have this:
    /wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-themes/bp-default/_inc/global.js?ver=1.6.4

    Notice also that there is an error in your path to the global.js: double slash between buddypress//bp-themes

    Not sure if this issue is an error or normal, when using the template pack plugin.
    That said, the problem is not BP, but the template or something you did to fit wp-bold106 with BP 😉
