    @atfpodcast – is the bar there when they are not logged in?

    does it do the same thing when using the 2014 or 2015 theme?

    have you checked settings –

    admin dashboard – settings – buddypress – click the settings tab – checkbox – Toolbar Show the Toolbar for logged out users ?

    occur when other plugins are deactivated?

    @olliecard – I’m sure there are many ways to accomplish this, however I am not sure that buddypress is easily adaptable to some of the requirements – privacy for certain things, restricting profiles and such. I hope someone can chime in an share methods for using BP in this way, I’d love to see those options.

    You could play with things like s2member for some restrictions and payments even – but restricting BP stuff is a challenge I think. Using other member and restrictions plugins with regular wordpress is pretty solid.

    I believe you may be able to achieve your goal using some other WP plugins – there are many others that get into profiles, membership, restrictions, classifieds and such.

    It might be 50 hours of work to mash all the various components together in a perfect way – and if so you may want to look at what wpmudev has withe their “membership 2” plugin and others that mix with it. wpmudev peeps had quick answers and solutions for something similar I posted about there years ago. I think their prices are double what they should be – but the support there exists, and if you are looking at a serious project it may be best to get into a professional support system like that.

    Of course you would mix and match some of the free plugins in the wp-repo and probably come out with something – press permit, profile plugins, s2member – custom fields, tweak some themes – maybe even go WP-MS multi site for some semi-separated static things – and you may achieve what you are describing as well.

    I’d love to see others post about other options, and I’d love to see BP have more fine grained control over things – it’s moving in that direction with things like user levels and such so the future with bp is possible, I just don’t think it’s there yet, and likely won’t be playing well with others anytime soon – and getting code help with BP – even if you offer to pay for it – is not the easiest thing in the world.

    @ricsca2 – upload a photo to become your profile pic / user avatar – is built in buddypress.

    uploading pics to your activity stream / albums stuff like that – is possible by adding other plugins. Currently rtmedia plugin is most popular, although likely not the most loved 😉

    a newer one – “media press” is gaining stream –

    and it’s been reported that “https://buddypress.org/support/topic/wp-photo-album-plus-works-100-with-buddypress/ ” – which looks very interesting.

    There has been suggestions and some debate about including additional photo / media uploads as part of core BP –

    Personally I think everyone should work on import / export options – or something that converts data from any photo plugin to provide the new bp-attachments info so things could be changed.. right now if you get users into one system I do not know of any way to switch to a different plugin.

    I don’t know if your question was about a “profile photo” or photos (plural) in general – but there’s some info for ya.

    @amedic – check your permalinks.. wordpress ->settings -> permlainks – make sure they are not set to default.. maybe change them anyhow, save.. change to pretty permalinks (like /postname) save again.

    MAke sure there is no notice at the bottom of that screen when you click save – some servers will have a notice at bottom of screen saying “wordpress can not write to your htaccess file, please copy this code and manually update your htaccess) –

    @toggerybob – if you did all that and nothing is working – I would delete everything and do a fresh install of wordpress first. Then Bp..

    you could backup your stuff you got now – zip files and such… but your site is basically blank right now – so a fresh install, deleting all your old wordpress files and connecting to a new blank database may be the easiest way to hash this out.

    @toggerybob
    change your permalinks to pretty permalinks in the wordpress settings,
    then activate bp.. then go run through the config / page associations (https://codex.buddypress.org/getting-started/configure-components/ )

    should be good to go at that point.. you may need to create a few blank “pages” like activate and register – or they may populate…

    @lo133 – So – you want to find something within your own buddypress site – and click to share this on your “friend’s activity / all” ? – I THINK your friends can see activity of their friends with a simple click (eg – /members/admin/activity/friends/ ) – so anything you have shared on your profile would display in that feed..

    Or (and?) – you want to be on another web site and share something from some other place onto your own activity wall? (I think that is easiest done with wpmudev’s activity plus plugin)

    There IS an option to kind of send something to your friend’s “wall” – on their profile if you click “public message” then it opens a box and adds @myFriendsName… which kind of does what you may be asking about.

    I would imagine there would be a cool modification to the WP “press this” button code – where a person may be able to highlightsomething and include a list of friends to @MyFriendsName them – however I think it could get bloated if you have a lot of friends…

    I myself think it better to just post an activity update and if your friends want to see it then can click to see friend’s activity – or you could make that display the default display when people log in … and if you needed to get a site notification to someone – say post a picture of a sunset – it shows in your activity, and your friend’s would see it on friend’s activity – and if that sunset reminded you of someone particular, you would @MyFriend Mention them – and they MAY get a notification sent to them.

    Still not exactly sure what content you are wanting to share with friends, and where you think that should show up.

    It may be that you want to customize how activity is displayed to logged in users and solve what you are going for. Not sure really.

    “Do you understand?” – I still do not understand what you are asking about. Sorry.

    Maybe you mean… while using your buddypress web site you want to share an activity with your other “friends” within buddypress or something?

    @djsteveb

    Participant

    @lo133 – you can add sharing buttons in many different ways with buddypress – simply add a plugin – there are tons of them in the wp-repo and it’s easy to adapt code that is already posted around.

    If you are asking why there is no sharing on the posts HERE on buddypress.org – I could not say – it is not something that I would use – and if I wanted to share something on facebook (which I do not) then I could simply copy the url and paste it – or use the functions that are now built into firefox or something.

    @djsteveb

    @lo133 – there are many, many reasons for NOT..

    but in case you are looking to do such (a horrible thing for your site, your users, their privacy, crappy buttons cluttering up..)

    A quick search via startpage.com shows there are several discussions about this and it appears that multiple people have discussed and come up with ways to do such a (n evil) thing..

    including.. https://wordpress.org/plugins/buddypress-social/
    discussions for doing this with various methods outlined from three years ago – https://buddypress.org/support/topic/share-activity-on-social-network/

    I would imagine there are some updated options as well, or it should be simply to tweak existing code that is already in the wild and gpl to do this today.

    of course you could also search the forums here and find more info about that more than likely – and a search in the wp-repo may bring up some free options to test that may do exactly what you are describing.

    I myself am glad this stuff is not included in core – as I would be searching for ways to remove every single last little bit of any third party code / assets and or dependencies..

    kind of like what needs to be done with recent updates of wordpress core – removing google fonts, removing gravatar, third party emoji, blah blah. meh.

    First thing I would do – go to permalinks – note what the settings are – change setting to something else – save. Then change settings back and save.

    see if it now works.

    if not I would check the bp associated pages thing – https://codex.buddypress.org/getting-started/configure-components/#settings-buddypress-pages

    see if works..

    if not – deactivate all plugins except BP… switch to default 2014 theme… see if works..

    A similar recent thread with some info: https://buddypress.org/support/topic/create-new-login-widget/

    So we are clear, a regular “wordpress login widget” IS a buddypress login when you have BP installed.. (99% sure on this)

    @djsteveb

    Participant

    @wpguru6
    you MAY have a “bp login widget” under widgets in themes-appearance-widgets and not need to get into the actual php codes.. and there are plenty of other addons in the wp-repo as well ( https://wordpress.org/plugins/search.php?type=term&q=login+widget )

    add a custom post or video with another widget perhaps?

    @gioabove5k
    Should be no big deal..
    if you are sure you permanently deleted them (also emptied the trash in wp or whatever) – then just create a 5 new pages.. register, activity, groups, activate, members.

    each one blank – check to see if wordpress makes your new pages “register-2” or not – if so – you may have just deleted the page, and not actually permanently removed it via the trash thing…

    then go into your components settings and make sure the things are linked there –

    Configure BuddyPress

    no big deal at all

    @jrunfitpro – hopefully one of the bp devs will chime in as to whether or not the comments on static pages, and or if comments on multi-site blog posts / static pages are supposed to be pulled into activity stream when site tracking is turned on.

    This COULD be a bug that needs to be put into trac..

    or it may need to be a feature request to add an additional setting somewhere to enable or disable or something..

    The last bp update was June 18th, 2015 according to the blog and the download page here.

    Not sure how to contact one of the devs to ask if this is an intended action – also not sure if this lack of comment tracking is due to my use of some old plugins, or me not using the default theme – I could convert one of my test sites to see if doing all defaults makes any difference.

    Maybe @boone or @james or someone knows about this.

    I could see many people finding this as a normal setting getting out of control – and I wonder if new comments on an old post should show up in the most recent activity stream , or would be added to a thread WAAY back in the activity if the post / page was created a year ago.. know what mean?

    Hopefully someone else can shed some light on how this is supposed to work so we can know if it’s working and if there are any current methods for modifying the current, or future intended behaviors.

    It’s too bad the title of this thread has Optimize Press in it – as I THINK some of the BP folks will completely dismiss it as it’s main question appears to be about a paid third party thing – yet the issue itself may be related to all bp installs actually.

    I’d love to see some documentation on the ways to use this function..

    I’m having to retire the old “activity block plugin”

    So I guess code should be added to them functions.php… and this is more lightweight than doing a plugin or something in bp-custom? Not as easy to change main themes this way – but I prefer lighter loads with extra dev notes than heavier loads for easier to re-theme once every so many years..

    with activity block I have currently set to “disallow”
    deleted_group_document, new_blog, new_member, joined_group, friendship_created, activity_liked

    What would be the code needed to put in the theme function to block these things with how bp stuff is setup these days?

    remove_action( 'bp_register_activity_actions', 'friends_register_activity_actions', 'bp_blogs_format_activity_action_new_blog', 'bp_groups_format_activity_action_joined_group' );

    I checked hooker io and I do not see any info about friendship created, deleted_group_document, activity liked…

    I am guessing that old code “new_blog” is replaced by “bp_blogs_format_activity_action_new_blog” for current bp stuff.. ?

    “joined_group” = “bp_groups_format_activity_action_joined_group” ?
    “new_member” = “bp_members_format_activity_action_new_member” ?
    friendship created = ?
    deleted_group_document = ?
    activity liked = ?

    would adding “bp_xprofile_format_activity_action_new_avatar” stop the flood of activity showing when someone changes profile pic 10 times in an hour?

    @labsupplyorg –
    Topics? You mean like bbpress forums topics? What do you mean exactly by “topic pages”?

    I would..
    check your permanlinks perhaps? go there, note what they are.. change them to something else.. save.. then change back.. save again..
    May not be related, but on one of my sites this similar issue crops up every other time I update rtmedia plugin for some reason.

    Does this happen if you disable other plugins?
    Does this happen with the default twenty-fifteen or 2014 theme?

    @rgrober – I am pretty new to this as well. I wonder what you mean by the buddypress default theme – as there was a bp default theme thing some time ago – but from what I have seen (and I have not seen everything) – the bp default theme stuff is legacy – do you mean you have a fresh install of wp / bp and it is using the “twenty-fifteen” or 2014 theme?

    @rgrober – What theme are you asking about?
    I am not sure this is even a buddypress related question / issue.

    @hot-head-videos – have you tried to switch to default theme, and deactivate all your other plugins, and then install BP.. and run through bp’s setup process… then start to enable your other plugins one by one to see if there is a conflict with other plugins / themes at that point?

    I highly suggest deactivating everything and get BP working with just wp and default theme first.

    Why you ask exact same question in new thread you?
    ( https://buddypress.org/support/topic/registration-10/ )

    already answered.

    Search the wp-repo and test a couple to see what works for you.

    in reply to you other statement on the other thread

    plug is already inactive for 2 years ..

    I still use that plugin “good question” on several wp / bp sites that are all the latest versions and it works just fine – so not sure what the issue is for you not trying it out to see for yourself.

    kind of a mashup of these two I guess – https://wordpress.org/plugins/buddypress-groups-import/

    https://wordpress.org/plugins/invite-anyone/

    with an extra email out instead of just within the bp internal mail thing I guess.

    Interesting idea.

    Not sure if anyone has made anything more along these lines..

    @djsteveb

    Participant

    @lcarolinarb – what theme are you using?

    @djsteveb

    Participant

    @jrunfitpro – one more question for ya – in your original post are you saying that you have like “static wordpress “pages”” – and when people leave a comment on one of your pages that the info does not get pulled into your activity stream?

    I think I have a similar thing going on with one of my wpmu err.. wordpress multi-site setups – and not sure that the main site’s “page” comments are pulled into the main activity stream either – I have a widget that displays the recent comments on the side, not sure if there is a way to pull newer comments on a page published two years ago into the current / top of the activity stream.

    This may be an issue that is not just a theme thing but other setting somewhere.

    @djsteveb

    Participant

    @passini – have you tried it using a “default theme” like 2014?

    If so and the problems persists, I would try deactivating all other plugins, and try with your setup running only with buddypress activated and a default theme.

    If making those changes fixes your issue, then you would know that it’s possibly your theme or one of the other plugins causing a conflict.
