    @jld142 – I would think you would find more info about making widgets via the wordpress.org site – and basic bing searches for other resources on that. I would suggest that you look into the other login widget plugins that have already been created and are freely available and gpl in the wordpress plugin repo – (https://wordpress.org/plugins/search.php?type=term&q=login+sidebar ) you may find one that already does everything you are trying to create, or one that you can fork and enhance – just a click away.

    @nasongo – so you just upload it – then go to your dashboard and it’s blank?
    Are you saying that you did not even get to the dashboard and activate / enable buddypress?
    OR do you mean you uploaded it, then went into the dashboard -> plugins and clicked activate (buddypress)?

    If you just upload BP and your dashboard is broken – something REALLY strange is going on..
    If you mean that you activate it and it goes blank – then I would suggest deactivating your other plugins first – and switch to default 2014 theme (or similar) – THEN activate BP.. run through it’s initial setup stuff – THEN look into which other plugins / themes you want to try..

    When you “upload and extract buddypress,” – are you putting it domainroot(wordpressinstallroot)/wp-content/plugins/ folder?

    If I had this issue, the first thing I would do is go to permalinks setup,
    make a not of the current permalinks setting.
    change the setting to something different.. anything.. save.
    (make sure it saved and that if you scroll down the page there is not a weird WP error saying your install does not have proper permissions to write to htaccess and you need to make it manually)

    then change it back to what the permalinks are supposed to be.
    save.

    Fixing a similar re-occuring problem I have every other time rtmedia’s plugin updates.

    I am a total noob with this stuff – a quick look with my limited tools and understanding of all things that make this stuff work…

    I THINK your rule here:

    .buddypress ul li {
        background: transparent none repeat scroll 0% 0%;
        padding: 0px;
    }

    Is over-writing the rule here:

    .main-nav li {
        white-space: nowrap;
        float: left;
        font: 12px "OpenSansBold";
        text-transform: uppercase;
        padding: 7px 20px 11px 0px;
        letter-spacing: -1px;
        text-shadow: 0px 0px 1px rgba(0, 0, 0, 0.3);
    }

    Which is what is being used on your home page.

    I think if you find the padding 0px on the .buddypress ul li line and change it to padding: 7px 20px 11px 0px; — that will fix your top nav current issue – now will that adversely affect some other ul li / menu or list somewhere (like a widget or something) – I don’t know.

    I am guessing that someone smarter then me can craft a rule that would work better and more specific.. something like
    .buddypress main-nav ul li

    padding: 7px 20px 11px 0px;
    }

    I have no idea if that would work – my understanding of css is like level 1 and bp is like level 1/2 – lol

    I also THINK that you have a weird triple css / child theme thing going on – again I don’t know, but looking at your css code rules in the firefox inspector, it looks like your pages are loading the exact same css file three times?

    I made a similar mistake with my first child theme – copying the whole shebang into a new child theme folder.. actually what you want is a relatively blank new folder and a relatively blank style.css that only includes rules you are going to overwrite / change from the parent theme.

    I don’t have access to your files or know the exact setup and may even be wrong in my understanding of what the firefox property inspector is showing – but you may want to look into why every rule appears to load the exact same three times and overwrites itself twice..

    hope this helps – not sure any of this is right..

    “They say it’s a BP issue” – Did they specify exactly what this issue is?

    If they could point to a specific bug we could check if it’s been listed in the trac or something..

    If they have no specifics – then it sounds like they simply have no desire to make their theme work well with BP – and I would consider other options. For the prices I saw on their site – I would expect a lot – I think you get the same functions elsewhere for free, and similar options with premium support elsewhere for about $19 –

    if it’s “becoming a popular theme” – I think that’s great, there are a lot of theme’s becoming popular and I hope more and more of them will include extra things for styling BP specific features – even basic themes can at least work with BP just fine – if there is something theme specific that breaks BP stuff then have to ask specifically why.

    Have you asked the optimizepress people about this?

    I myself would not research this – if looking for the stuff you are asking about I would look at other page builders like the ones from siteorigin(?) – and wpmu’s upfront.

    that’s just me.. but I would expect you to get your specific answer from the optimize people, probably not gonna get much help with / about that here..

    there are several wp plugins that can redirect a user upon login to specific pages.
    I can’t put more than two links in a reply without getting moderation held / akistmet spammed.

    not sure if / how this works – seen it – never played with it:
    https://wordpress.org/plugins/bp-my-home/

    might also take a peek if these can updated / adapted..
    https://wordpress.org/plugins/bp-profile-widgets/

    BuddyPress Cover
    Content Aware Sidebars

    several others – now do any of these work with the current version of wp / bp ? I don’t know.
    Do they work with the default theme and then cause issues if a different theme was used? don’t know.

    Do they cause conflicts with other plugins? have not tested.

    no – that is the html you are looking at I think.. the css rules should be in another pane.. something like

    .entry-content h1, .entry-content h2, .entry-content h3, .entry-content h4, .entry-content h5, .entry-content h6 {
    color: #444;
    }

    so you open style.css and ctrl-F (find) “entry-content h1″
    without giving a class on css – this is crude way of showing what could/should be done more eloquently I’m sure..

    change the #444 to #000

    w3c has great free tutorials on this, as does code academy dot com… I’m not an expert either.

    after change save refresh page – or in some cases hold down shift to refresh page.. should work.

    @kawaiikawaii – you did not mention if you tried this with ALL the other plugins disabled, and if you tried to get same results with default 2014 theme.

    @djsteveb

    @swansonchristopherm – with firefox, and I think it’s similar with chrome and others.. when you right click on your group description then click “inspect element” or something like that, it should bring up a list of rules that are affecting the color, font, etc for group description.

    find that (most likely) in your style.css under appearance (themes), edit.

    there are some easy to use wordpress plugins that will create a child theme for you with a click.. but it’s not 100% for such a small change – easy to get back in and change it back when cryout pushes an update.

    @kawaiikawaii – does it work if you disable
    buddypress-social-icons
    mycred

    and any other plugins, along with switching to 2014 theme?

    Is this happening when using a desktop computer or a mobile device?

    My users have been telling me that rtmedia image uploads no longer make it to the activity stream or profiles when they try using an android device (tablet or cell) – this has been reported my several others at the rtcamp’s no-support-community-forums ( http://community.rtcamp.com/t/cant-upload-photos-using-android-devices/4892/8 )

    At this point I don’t know what the problem is – is it wp’s new security update thing that broke a lot of things?

    I’m still searching for answers – but this is a major problem and a reason I have been suggesting for years that BP has media uploads as part of core (most recently here – https://buddypress.org/support/topic/rtmedia-export-script-attachments-api/ )- and hopefully hooks into the new bp-attachments thing.

    Now if someone can code an export / import conversion to pull all the info from rtmedia into basic structured info that any theme or other plugin can call / style, etc – I’d love to axe the ridiculously bloated rtmedia BS.

    @vuko – I don’t know where the code is, but there was a thread about 4months old – https://buddypress.org/support/topic/bussdypress-title-and-seo-yoast-problem/ – with SOME details – unfortunately I don’t think anything has changed much since then – although my fingers are crossed there will be more options with this in the future.

    Maybe something along the lines of this suggest – https://buddypress.org/support/topic/page-titles-meta-desc-option-like-wp-permalinks/

    perhaps others can chime in how to make that better, more flexible, and perhaps a plugin or something.

    @atfpodcast – If I were you I would start with the free “quick chat” plugin from the wp-repo – if your site is a bit more serious then I would get the av-chat dot net system from nusoft – it would be about $200 for the level of action your system is seeing (plus a vps or something (maybe a digital ocean droplet?) to handle the red5 streaming thing) – I am having good luck with the wp integration and the av-chat system, it also works with BP, logins, avatars… and they are active developers. Many customization options – and currently my favorite system.

    @djsteveb

    @atfpodcast – this has been brought up in the support forums a few times – you could search the forums for “chat”
    For basic no frills chat room and bp I would start with the free “quick chat” plugin in the wp-repo – I use it on a couple of sites and it’s fine for most.. if you chat or and server gets busy you may want to move on to something that does not rely so much on using mysql.. I posted some info at the bottom of one of these following threads about that

    I would suggest perhaps starting here:
    https://buddypress.org/support/topic/chat-plugins-with-one-to-many-messaging/#post-241066

    https://buddypress.org/support/topic/chat-plugin-recommendations-2/

    Search the forums and you will find more discussions about these – I can only post two links in this reply so can’t be more specific with a single post.

    Your mileage may vary – but I have not had any good real world use with ‘comet chat’ nor ‘wpmu’s chat plugin’ – chat systems that are free almost always use your sql database for message storage and require a bunch of back and forth ajax like server requests – fine if you have less than 20 people chatting on a dedicated server – not so good when it gets to be more than that in my previous experiences – some of the other chat systems rely on third party servers – which puts you in a position of giving away all of your users data to others, dealing with the fact their servers are out of your control and may not work all the time – stuff like that..

    read the other convos for more details I guess..

    @henrywright – thanks for the heads up.

    I would rather pay a bp dev $300 to make something that works and provides the attachments data needed for things to be extended rather than pay rtmedia 300 to continue over-bloating that joke of a script that we all are kind of stuck with.

    So if someone wants to build it and can do it for $300 I will donate today.

    Of course anyone starting a BP site today has the option to use media press or WP Photo Album Plus – which I have more faith in these days – but seeing how there has been nothing in the core it’s like BP is hostage to 3rd party fails.

    I’d love to see some core thing built with basic functions and the bp-attachments stuff and give others a better base to work with, then it would not be so painful if a media enhancement plugin was to go my the way side – we should still have ways to display previously saved / attached media if we had to axe the possible lightobx / gallery addons.

    (axing rtmedia right now would basically mean scrapping years of user posts / data – going back to the same issue with had when bp-album withered up) – would be nice to have something core – even if not released in current core – but coming soon like the rest api – that people could be comfortable building with / upon.

    NOw wondering if something better was made, and there was no reasonable way to export rtmedia info to be merged with a newer media display mechanism.. and if we added a new component to handle uploads, then we’d need an extra addon to prevent the rtmedia upload buttons from appearing everywhere (in order to discourage people from using that) – but then it would still need to be running to keep old stuff showing – and with all the extra bloat – cramming pages with tons of inline code – pulling in bootstrap and fontawesome and all this crap for now reason.. oh the horror – we need an export / importer.. maybe if someone makes a solid BP component someone else can figure out how to connect some fields and make an export/ import thing that will connect.

    /random thoughts / rant off

    Just worried that this is really the achilles heel in bp – we can’t go through this loss of media again

    @jordanboon0 – certainly there is more than one way to accomplish what you are proposing here.

    My first thought upon reading this is is that you can create a “multi-user blog” with wordpress. Each new artist becomes a “contributor” or even “editor” upon sign up, and they can post a new gallery easily, then your admin(s) can choose what new galleries get published.

    You go do all that with a single blog / wordpress install – and do it without buddypress, just make a cool custom author page for whichever theme you want to use.

    There are many plugins and settings for things like front end uploads, post author profiles, wordpress gallery fancy stuff and all that.

    You could also put buddypress into this mix and give your artists some extra social network stuff like private messages, groups and all that – however if you go with buddypress and and that layer to handle everything (without getting your users to submit posts / pages via standard wordpress) – then you have to get into a media plugin like rtmedia, mediapress, or – another one posted about a month ago.. anyhow – those media plugins are kind of their own “silos” – customizing how they work is not a few wp repo plugins away – and support for what you may want to do with them may be disappointing.

    Of course you could take WP, add in BP if you really want the social layer, and still use the main site blog as kind of a “multi-user (or “group” blog) and do it that way.. you could get more complex and turn it into a multi-site install where each user get’s their own unique blog with gallery plugins – but moderation of posts and such with that setup may become more of a challenge – along with the extra headaches with running a multi blog network.

    Anyhow – given the details you provided with your stated goals, I would forget about buddypress and multi-site – just install wordpress and do some searches in the wp-repo and themes section for “author pages”, “group blog” “post moderation” “front end uploads” and the various “Gallery” plugins – I think you can accomplish what you are going for pretty easily with lots of customization options.. without all the drawbacks and limitations of BP.

    Did this start after the BP 2.3 release on June 3(ish) ? – I saw a note saying this release included

    “Improved Handling of Blog Media in Activity Stream.

    BuddyPress now generates better excerpts in the activity streams for blog posts containing images or other embedded media content.”

    However I am not sure if there is any documentation / additional info about this – just a blurb on the release notes on the bp dot org / blog is all I have found so far.

    I am interested in finding out what you come up with in regards to this.

    I tried to use something like:

    ‘field’ => 2,
    );

    (some info from https://codex.buddypress.org/themes/guides/displaying-extended-profile-fields-on-member-profiles/ )
    to replace the actual names I was using in a page title template thing, and never got it to work – but I have no idea what I am doing – trying to franken-hack a bit of code provided by one person and replace the field names with field numbers so the code would work with a different site I was playing with – when I tried replacing the name with this field number thing it did not work – but again I don’t understand php nor bp stuff well enough to know if I just missed a character, or something else was needed, or the function isn’t working as it should.

    If I may suggest that instead you add to your robots.txt file some wildcard rules such as:
    Disallow: *members/*activity*
    Disallow: */activity/p/*

    as to where I think it may be possible to pull some info from the activity posts to create page titles and other meta stuff, most activity posts are going to be short in most cases, and having a bunch of new pages indexed (even properly with title and meta stuff) is likely to add little value to your site overall – and in fact might create a situation where a bulk of your site pages are considered “thin content” – which would hurt your seo more than any proper page titles will on activity pages.

    Considering you are also asking about methods for adding meta keywords, I think you are looking for SEO help that is waaaaaaay outdated – unless you are going for different search engines aside from the big G, bing / yahoo for some reason – in which case my knowledge of the other spiders and their indexing methods is tiny.

    Now if you are trying to get proper page titles on your “groups” and member profile pages, I think that would be a worthwhile effort.

    Just a few random suggestions, I am not a BP dev or prof coder yet – others may have different advice.

    I think that getting and using this info will be better / easier perhaps about WP 4.4 or whenever they include the REST API in the core – and then it should be easy peazy for themes to pull and use this info – not that it should be rocket science to do it now… however I have had no luck getting help with similar issues on other BP pages in the past.

    It usually boils down to BP peeps saying that page title and meta stuff should be handled by your theme.. your theme devs will say they use the standard wp_title function (or something like that – which has been flipped around recently) – and that kind of stuff if you want it to be beyond what is “standard wordpress” should be handled by an SEO plugin… my experience with several SEO plugins has been that they will not get into all the BP “pseudo pages” for whatever reason, perhaps because a taxonomy is not registered for them, and that makes it more difficult.

    Random thoughts for ya

    @enad12 – I suggest looking at the plugins in the wp-repo and see if any of them may suit your needs.

    https://wordpress.org/plugins/search.php?q=invite

    https://wordpress.org/plugins/search.php?q=facebook

    I myself avoid adding anything facebook to any of my sites as much as possible. In the very few places that I did add anything fbook, I would make sure that they loaded all assets from my site and not a third party server – for site speed and privacy issues as well.

    for example the “2 Click Social Media Buttons” plugin requires a double click in order to turn on these third party integration / sharing things – and the author has a write (in German that may needs translating) on his site – which is linked to in the plugin descript – that describes some of the laws in Germany and Europe in regards to leaking user info to third parties – so if you are going down that road I would look more into that and whatever laws you may need to follow in your area of the world in regards to those kinds of things.

    @andy277 – not sure what your setup is, and if my setup is extra customized in any way, however..

    one of my mulsite-bp setups – if I am logged in, and I hover over the top bar far right, “howdy admin” a little pop-down menu appears – scroll down to “sites” (hovering) – I have “my sites” and “create a site” – this may be different if a user does not yet have a “site” – would you check?

    Also, on that same setup… I have the list of “member / user created sites” appear on a tab/page called “member blogs” – when I click that page to view all member blogs (aka multi-site sites) – near the top of the page I have a bar with “all sites (default selected “tab”) – my sites (next tab) and create a site (third tab)

    It seems to be a pretty standard link, which I guess you could add just about anywhere on your site – like using a custom menu or whatever – for my site it is MyWebSite dot com/blogs/create/

    Of course these things may not be the same with different setups, and not sure if me being logged in and having admin priv makes any difference and whatever – not enough time to run through various test cases at the moment…

    do you find these options with your setup?
