    Try moving RewriteBase /socialnetwork/ to the top, directly underneath RewriteEngine On

    For example:

    RewriteEngine On
    RewriteBase /socialnetwork/

    RewriteCond %{HTTPS} off
    RewriteRule (.*) https://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI} [R=301,L]

    RewriteRule ^index\.php$ - [L]

    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-d
    RewriteRule . /index.php [L]

    Unfortunatly i am not that good with php, so i hope i will be able to create the function myself

    You won’t need to create a function 🙂

    This comment was kind of on the right track but as most of the people pointed out in that topic, editing core files is a very bad idea.

    Instead, you should take a look at this article to familiarise yourself with the Template Hierarchy. That way, you can remove the ‘reply’ link and be sure your modifications will remain after you upgrade BuddyPress.

    Hi @bibblehead

    Clicking on ‘Register’ on site, when I am logged out, brings up ‘Create an Account’ but ’email address’ field required is already populated with my user name ‘bibblehead’ and ‘Password’ field already populated with password in usual dots!

    It is your browser doing this. Try clearing your browsing data and you’ll see these dots and your username will be removed.

    You are ensuring /socialnetwork/ is prepended to relative paths in the line RewriteBase /socialnetwork/. Why are you manually doing it again in line RewriteRule . /socialnetwork/index.php [L]?

    Try removing just the socialnetwork part from the last line.

    What’s the entire contents of your .htaccess?

    @amalsh

    None of what you have here relates to redirecting HTTP to HTTPS. I’m assuming you know that?

    That should not be an issue whatsoever with 2 John Smiths, two should should up and you click on whichever one you want

    That doesn’t solve the problem with URLs. How can you get first/last name cleanly into a URL?

    example.com/members/john%20smith

    or with some string replacement:

    example.com/members/john-smith

    but what about John Smith 2 or John Smith 3? You’ll need to append something to the URL

    example.com/members/john-smith2
    example.com/members/john-smith3

    That doesn’t look great and John Smith has no choice in what gets appended.

    My personal opinion is usernames are there for a reason and that’s to uniquely identify members in a ‘pretty’ manner (instead of by user ID for example).

    The username serves multiple purposes:

    1. It’s needed internally for use in URLs etc. First name and surname won’t play nicely in this context because you can’t have spaces etc in URLs.
    2. It’s used as a ‘friendly’ unique identifier. What happens when you have 2 members named John Smith? How do you private message the first John Smith without private messaging the second?
    3. There are probably more purposes I’m missing?

    Hi @minglonaire

    This whole username, name system in Buddypress is weird

    What do you think is weird about it?

    Thanks for sharing @vimes1984. Would be great if you could get it into the official plugin dir!

    You have a semicolon that needs removing (value of Para2)

    You should check your error logs to see if anything is written. Also, what status code are you getting?

    @henrywright

    Moderator

    That looks pretty standard to me. everything is sent to index.php as expected so I doubt the problem is with your .htaccess directives. The problem must be elsewhere

    Sorry, I didn’t read the article in full. I just noticed item 9 describes how to do the .htaccess part.

    Do you have anything else in .htaccess that may be conflicting?

    Hey @amalsh

    Which server are you using? If Apache, do you have .htaccess enabled? If so then how about using mod_rewrite?

    RewriteEngine on
    RewriteCond %{HTTPS} off
    RewriteRule ^(.*)$ https://%{HTTP_HOST}/$1 [R=301,L]

    This will do this following:

    1. Turn on the rewriting engine
    2. Check if the request isn’t HTTPS and
    3. 301 redirect whatever the current page to the same page but HTTPS.

    Hi pixskull

    You have a number of options. There are plugins you could install which would help you. Also there is the code-it-yourself approach. It depends on your time, coding skills, requirements etc.

    Check out https://apppresser.com/ as well. It lets you build apps with WordPress.

    I’m not an expert on mod_rewrite or regexp but:

    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_METHOD} POST
    RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} .register*
    RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !.*http://manifestationjournal.com/.* [OR]
    RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} ^$
    RewriteRule (.*) http://mysite.com/ [R=301,L]

    This tells Apache you want to permenantly redirect all HTTP requests to http://mysite.com/ that a) use the POST method b) include registe, register, registerr, registerrr etc in the path c) are not referred from http://manifestationjorunal.com or don’t have a user agent header

    Assuming nothing else is going on in your .htaccess or http.conf files, if the request that takes place fits this bill above exactly then the redirect will happen, else the thing making the request will be granted access

    I’m using px units for measurement right now and would be good to get over to rems.

    Good idea. I’m amazed at how the use of relative units drastically improves visual appearance when using large (and small) devices. Everything scales so nicely. Probably a good idea to use vector images such as SVG as well.

    Hi @kphawaii

    Which theme are you using? Plugins?

    @henrywright

    Moderator

    Hi @joesegal

    A couple of things spring to mind that could be the cause of the problem:

    1. The theme you’re using (Try TwentyFifteen)
    2. The plugins you have installed (Try deactivating all plugins after switching theme to see if the problem resolves)

    @lisame as I said earlier, you will need to use a different hook for the settings page but looking through the bp_settings_action_general() function there seems no hook available.

    You have 2 options from here if you’d like to get this sorted:

    1. Request the core team insert a hook inside bp_settings_action_general() which will let you validate the new chosen password
    2. Remove bp_settings_action_general() using remove_action() and roll your own bp_settings_action_general() function, hooking it to bp_actions

    Hi @fuzzllc

    A way of doing this would be to override the user’s role when they sign up. BuddyPress provides a hook we can use for this bp_core_signup_user. So, you could do something like this:

    function fuzzllc_set_default_role( $user_id ) {
        $user = new WP_User( $user_id );
        $user->set_role( 'keymaster' ); // keymaster can be whatever you like
    }
    add_action( 'bp_core_signup_user', 'fuzzllc_set_default_role' );
