I would suggest posting this question on the link kapil provided above as well.
@pollyplummer-
There are more detailed instructions here:
https://codex.buddypress.org/developer-discussions/buddypress-forum/
I hope that helps.
In reply to: Feature Request: Group Activity RSS FeedThat’s a good idea, r-a-y. Thanks for posting the ticket.
This is really a WPMU question and best asked in that forum. But, have you set up a wildcard DNS record as instructed in the WPMU readme.txt file?
The phrase “A Member” does not appear in bp-wire-templatetags.php. It does appear in the options in the menu “Settings > Notifications”.
I’m not exactly sure what you’re asking? What version of BuddyPress are you running?
In reply to: bp_forums_setup error on activationRead the first section in this thread and see if that solves your issue:

In reply to: Friends Function Has Disappeared…Cool! I’m glad that was an easy fix and that you’re back up and running.
In reply to: @user notation: A Feature SuggestionThanks for creating the new ticket. You did it right!

As Burt has not been around the forums or on IRC for 10 weeks, I would not count on this particular plugin to be updated anytime soon. In fact, at this stage, I would assume it will not be updated at all. You can PM him and see if you get a response. If you do, please ask him to post here as well.
Remember, all the plugins on the WP plugin repository are GPL so anyone could take his work, update it, add to it, and rename it and call it a new plugin–with the appropriate credit given to Burt of course.
In reply to: Forum – cannot post in old groupsWhat application are you using to view your MySQL DB? Many people use phpMyAdmin. What ever application you are using, make sure that you have first determined how many rows your wp_sitemeta table contains.
In my version of phpMyAdmin, it defaults to showing only 30 records at a time. So, if there are more than 30 rows in a given table, and you are not aware of that fact, it can be easy to assume that all available records are being displayed–even when there are buttons to advance to the next set or records. Of course, there are a few ways to change the default value so that more (or all) records are showed.
In reply to: Installed a theme errorSo, if you switch to the default BP theme, everything works fine. If that is the case, then there could very well be an issue with the Avenue K9 theme. Perhaps the designer, Michael Kuhlmann, can help you out further.
One click (or rather two clicks) bbPress install works great for me and many others.
In reply to: @user notation: A Feature SuggestionInteresting idea. Why don’t you create a new enhancement request in Trac. You log into Trac using the same credentials as you do here on the forums.
In reply to: Installed a theme errorWhat changed between your last two posts? Something you did caused your install to go from “works great”, as you indicate two posts above, to “All I have is a blank page”.
Did you activate any plugins after you got the install working again? Did you modify any code anywhere?
In reply to: Forum – cannot post in old groupsCorrect. The meta key “bb-config-location” will only be located in the wp_sitemeta table. What I was suggesting is that their may be duplicate (multiple) entries of the “bb-config-location” meta key within the wp_sitemeta table.
Make sure that you have throughly scanned the entire table for that possibility. I have seen this happen with other meta key, meta value pairings before.
In reply to: Error in bp_field_has_public_dataI’m using the facebuddy theme which I migrated over to the new template system
So, you’ve updated your theme to the new parent/child theme architecture but you have not yet upgraded BuddyPress.
Why do I say this? Because the line numbers for the code you list above are for BP version 1.0.x and not for the new version 1.1.x. In the current v1.1 series, that function you refer to starts on line 236.
You need to upgrade BuddyPress to the newest version before you can use the new theme architecture.

That’s a great suggestion. However, I would have thought that when Michael tried using the “re-install” link in “BuddyPress > Forums Setup”, that the proper bb-config.php location would have been saved.
Perhaps there are two–or more–conflicting meta data entries for the location of a bb-config.php. That’s what I’m now guessing.
Delete all the “bb-config-location” entries except for the proper one and it should work. Although, it might require starting the install process over once again. This means deleting all the bb tables and the config file AND any and all entries for “bb-config-location”.

Based on the fact that you’ve been struggling with this issue for 3 weeks without blowing a gasket, I think it is safe to say that you have already demonstrated patience!
This is a free, open source project primarily powered by volunteers’ efforts. So don’t expect to get instant results.
As r-a-y has stated, there used to be several pre-built fields and site developers also had the option to create their own pre-built fields by importing their list via a .cvs file. But, as Andy states in this thread, that feature is no longer available:
https://buddypress.org/forums/topic/making-prebuilt-profile-fields
So, you either have to code a solution yourself or hire a developer to do it.
By the way, up until two-weeks ago, there was only one official BuddyPress developer. Now there are two. The rest of us are unpaid volunteers–some of us with coding experience, some of us with design experience, and some of us just interested in running social networking sites.
You can ask for additonal insights on the #buddypress-dev IRC channel. But even there, it is simply a group of developers with their own projects and responsibilities. Only Andy and jjj are the official voices of BuddyPress development.
Well, you need to go through the steps of the section you’re reading, “I’ve used a WordPress theme for my blog with the default BuddyPress member themeâ€. In essence, you are adapting a non-BP theme to be useable by BP. Your other option is to do what it suggests at the end of that section.
If you need to grab the old default theme files, they can be found here:
Did you have a previous installation of BuddyPress? It seems from your thread title that you did.
The old two-theme system relied on the bphome theme residing in /wp-content/themes/ and the bpmember theme residing in /wp-content/bp-themes/. If you had BuddyPress working before, this is where those two themes had to live.
In reply to: How to extend the length limitation of pingback url? This is truly a question for the WPMU forums. But look at discover_pingback_server_uri() in the WPMU file comment.php for perhaps a little more insight.
Read this Codex article and see if it helps:

I’ve contacted jjj to ask for his insight regarding your issue. Between his bug-fixing work and upcoming travel to NY this weekend to participate in WordCamp, I’m not too sure whether he will have any time until next week.
In reply to: Forum – cannot post in old groupsUnfortunately, I do not have any dev sites that have meta data from the old, deep-integration bbPress forum days. I blow out everything (data and files) when I upgrade. I want a clean install for all dev work. Old test data is worthless to me.
Perhaps jjj or someone else can chime in and help Michael work through the possible issue of orphaned bbPress meta data.
