Which version of WordPress MU and BuddyPress are you using? From where did you download the Avenue K9 theme?

Have you seen this BP thread?

Okay, we can rule out some strange server configuration issue.

If I remember correctly, you used to have bbPress running via deep integration but did not need any of that old data. The very first time you tried using the new one-click forum setup, did you choose the “Existing bbPress Installation” or the “New bbPress Installation” option?

Do you still have a backup copy of your old bb-config file? If so, then delete the current bb-config.php file by replacing it with your old bb-config.php file. Then go to the WPMU backend and visit “BuddyPress > Forums Setup” and click the “re-install” link. At this stage, it is worth a try.

Please note, using an “Existing bbPress Installation” does not really mean using the old bbPress files. It means use an existing bb-config file to setup bbPress with the bbPress files located in the new location. You will see this text at some point in the process:

BuddyPress will now use its internal copy of bbPress to run the forums on your site. If you wish, you can remove your old bbPress installation files, as long as you keep the bb-config.php file in the same location.

Data on who viewed a given user’s profile is not stored in the database. To accomplish this task, you would have to write your own plugin and add at least one new table to the DB.

However, depending on how the plugin was coded, on even a moderately active site, this/these new table(s) could grow to a very large size. For instance, if a given site was not set up to disallow viewing of users’ profiles unless the viewer was logged in, all sorts of useless visitor hits would be encountered–unknown actual people viewing a profile, search engine bots visiting a profile for purposes of indexing, etcetera.

Of course, the solution would be to code the plugin to ignore those type of hits and only log actual logged in member views. But then the number of true views would be greatly undercounted.

As this issue is quite perplexing, perhaps we should keep the discussion here instead of via PM. That way, others can benefit as well.

You mentioned in one of your PMs that both your BP installations are active. This means that you cannot start over with a clean MySQL table.

However, for purposes of isolating this problem, can you create a third installation on your live server. This way, we will know whether or not an absolutely clean, vanilla install (new MySQL DB, new WPMU and BP install using the default BP theme with no 3rd-party plugins) works on your server environment, works on the server your web host has provided to you.

Well, I’m behind something or other. But, it’s debatable whether or not I’m working.

If under “BuddyPress > Component Setup” you do not see a “Friends” section, then you must have an incomplete BuddyPress install. Would you please go to your site and verify that you have bp-friends.php and a directory (folder) called bp-friends installed under /buddypress/.

    @nexia-

Have you been in stasis? Just kidding. ;)

You’re correct. The pace of development of WP-based projects has really accelerated over the past several years.

Have you enabled bbPress in WPMU’s backend as Site Admin? You go to “BuddyPress > Forums Setup” and click the appropriate button.

I installed via SimpleScripts on my website’s Control Panel

This is more than likely the issue. Read this post (and follow its link) for more insight:

I took just a quick look at that thread and it looks like to me that at least 40% of them are already addressed in 1.1.2 or will be added by 1.2. The rest are either no longer relevant or are too site-specific to have a basis for being included in core.

    @Lriggle

Forums integrate into groups. Therefore, if bbPress has been activated and a given group has enabled forums, then you need to navigate to a group that you belong to and click the “Forum” menu. You can then see and respond to existing threads or create a new thread.

This is pure speculation on my part, but I would guess that 1.1.3 could be released within 2-3 weeks. It could be a little sooner or later.

As far as version 1.2, if BP-release history offers anything to go on, I would guess that there could be a 1.1.4 before a 1.2 release. Even if the versioning jumps directly from 1.1.3 to 1.2, I would not expect that to happen until after the new year. There are still a few big-picture items that need to make it into BP to meet the roadmap for v1.2 and WPMU 2.9 has yet to be released.

But, what do I know. Andy and jjj are the ones to answer. I’m just an outsider waiting to hang out with the cool kids. ;)

Okay, I guess it is time for an update.

I’ve had some great feedback from a few of the alpha 1 testers. Based on that, I’m proceeding with the next phase. At this stage, I might skip the alpha 2 stage and move directly to the first public beta.

What does this mean? Well, depending on my progress, the first public beta release of my Privacy Component will be in about 3 weeks. I cannot promise that for certain, but let’s say I’m aiming for December 1st as the release date.

At that stage, the component while fully-functional, will still be considered for use in non-production environments.

I suggest pasting your solution into this thread for the time being. Otherwise, it will get pushed down into the the large, deep-thread morass. ;)

A few months from now after all BP installs have hopefully switched to the parent/child theme architecture, it can then be removed.

I have not seen this particular issue reported.

    Above you state that:

I’ve attempted to one by one remove plugins and add them back I’ve even tried deactivating bp and reuploading it…

It’s not clear whether you actually had all 3rd-party plugins deactivated when you were attempting to troubleshoot this issue. Just to be clear, you need to switch to the BP default theme and deactivate ALL plugins (other than BuddyPress). This means all WPMU plugins and any BP-dependent 3rd-party plugins should be deactivated.

You want to distill your install environment down to the lowest common denominator. If your setup then works without issue, you add back one plugin at a time, test, and continue that process until the issue occurs again.

Sometimes this is not sufficient, though, and you may actually have to remove all the deactivated plugins from your install. You can back them up into a temporary folder and then delete them from the /plugins/ directory (and /mu-plugins/ if you have any there).

Finally, check your server’s error logs to see if there are ANY errors being reported.

Have you seen these codex articles?

As for a listing of deprecated theme functions, your best bet is to look in the BuddyPress codebase, specifically in bp-core-deprecated.php (search for the string “/*** BEGIN DEPRECATED OLD BUDDYPRESS THEME SUPPORT ************/” and then also in bp-core-templatetags.php (search for the word “deprecated” and you will find a number of references).

    Michael-

You state above that you do not need the old bbPress data. If that is the case, then I recommend that you do a clean install of BuddyPress.

    Follow this procedure:

    • Make a backup copy of your MySQL DB just in case
    • Deactivate all BP-dependant plugins
    • Deactivate BP
    • Delete all the bbPress-specific tables in your DB
    • Delete the old BP files located in the /buddypress/ directory
    • Upload a fresh copy of BP 1.1.2, move the contents of /bp-themes/ into their proper place
    • Reactivate BP
    • Go to the forums setup submenu under the BuddyPress menu and select the “Set up a new bbPress installation” option

    Does that solve the issue?

Some form of media manager/gallery is a future BuddyPress feature. Until that is made available, you will have to look to 3rd-party solutions.

Just be aware of the issue of licensing when using Kaltura. Although Kaltura.org is self-described as open source video, and in fact its component code is licensed under GPL3, when you use the hosted solution–that is you are not storing your users’ media on your own server but instead on a Kaltura Media Network server–then all of your users’ content is automatically made available under the Creative Commons 3.0 license. See this Kaltura forum thread:

What does this mean? Well, it means you better clearly state to all your members that anything they upload via your site will automatically get licensed under CC 3.0. This means it will be freely available to anyone else to see and to use as they see fit within the CC licensing specifications.

That may not seem like a big deal to you if you are a fan of CC, but you should not assume that all your members will think the same way or necessarily want their content to be made available for free use.

Thankfully, there is a solution. If your using the self-hosted version of Kaltura.org–Kaltura Community Edition (CE)–then you can set the licensing rights for all member-submitted content. This means you can effectively control the privacy of your members’ content if that is important to you, your site, and your members.

If you choose to use Kaltura CE for your site, then you will need to make sure that you have sufficient storage and bandwidth to meet the needs of your site. Also, I have no idea of what kind of tech support Kaltura offers users of the CE version.

Finally, Kaltura is a for-profit company who is freely offering an open source media hosting solution via their kaltura.org site. They do offer premium services as well. So, if you have the budget, you can purchase a premium account to make all your users’ content private. At least that is what was indicated in the thread response in the first link above. You can visit http://corp.kaltura.com/solutions/video_solution for more information.

Note: look at the footer on the above Kaltura link to see how they handle the CC issue. I would argue that you would also want to make the CC issue very clear in any TOS and actually right under any media “Upload” link.

    Above you state:

Now that’s a post I have been waiting to read for ages! I am telling you this would rock the vbulletin forum world. Do give us updates on when it will be released.

If you go back and read Anointed’s post, in his first paragraph, he says this:

I have no plans of releasing the software, but I can give you a little insight into why no-one has responded to your request.

So, unless Anointed and his crew change their minds, I would not count on their work being made available to the public. It sounds like it took a significant amount of effort and I can understand why their company would not want to make it freely available. VB, after all, is not an open source application.

Okay, my mistake. I read your OP too quickly. My response in the other thread was specific to a different question and I assumed that you were asking the same, specific question.

What I believe you are actually looking to do–based on your most recent response–is to change each component’s slug or some of them. Read this article by Andy:

    https://buddypress.org/blog/how-to/customizable-slugs-in-buddypress/

Of course, that does not solve the issue of modifying actual text within a given file.

You are looking in the right place–in header.php of the bp-sn-parent theme folder. Starting on line 86 of that file, you will find the code.

By the way, I said look in header.php, not specifically within the <head> tag section of the header.php file. Use the search feature of your IDE and you will quickly find what you are looking for! ;)
