but it sounds as if your solution removes blogs from the bar altogether. We plan to make subscribers members of blogs that the Admins set up…

You have BuddyPress installed, I assume. So why don’t you give it a try–disabled the blog tracking and see what happens. It does exactly what you’re looking for. It prevents your members (users) from being able to create their own blogs. It does not hide the existing Admin blogs from them.

If you have more than one Admin-created blog, you can place additional buttons, or fancy menus, to those Admin-based blogs.

Unless you change the default behavior, WPMU by default makes all new users subscribers to the primary site blog (Blog ID number 1), which is the Admin blog. If you try out my suggestion, you will see that the “Blog” button is still visible. It takes users to the Admin-created blog. Only the “Blogs” button disappears for sight as it is a link to all user-created blogs, not the Admin blog.

I agree that it makes sense for BP to first check to see if blog creation has been disabled in WPMU’s backend, and if it has, to automatically disable the BP Blog menu options.

Has anyone thought of a solution for this or can think of a way to accomplish it without needing to manually edit a lot of php?

This is already easy to accomplish in the BuddyPress admin menu. Log into WPMU’s backend as Site Admin. Go to the BuddyPress menu grouping. Select “Component Setup > Blog Tracking” and disable the Blogs component.

When you reload BuddyPress in your browser, you will see that the “Blogs” menu option under the “My Account” menu and the “My Blogs” menu are now gone. Also, members will not have the option to create blogs from their page.

Was he ever a BuddyPress.org member? I don’t recall his name. If he was on BP in the past and you know the his username (I assume it would be a pseudonym since I don’t recall his real name), then simply message him directly.

Otherwise, you’ll have more luck inquiring on the WPMU forums.

I’m closing this thread as it has nothing to do with BuddyPress support.

The results have be out for more than 2 months now! Look at the core section of BP version 1.4.

Are you using the BuddyPress Skeleton Component as the framework with which to code your plugin? If not, you should download it and see how the example code that adds an admin page to WPMU’s backend is written.

The example code is in bp-example-admin.php.

If WPMU + BuddyPress is working fine–that is when you just have BuddyPress installed and activated and no other plugins activated–then this issue is best solved by posting on the WPMU forums.

As a general rule, though, if you suspect that the issue is plugin related, then you should follow the recommended procedure for tracking down misbehaving plugins. You deactivate all plugins and then reactivate plugins one at a time, each time testing out WPMU to see if it is working. If so, you reactivate the next plugin and so on until you find the plugin that seems to be causing the issue.

Also, make sure that you are using the most recent plugin for the version of WPMU you’re running. If a plugin is not yet updated to run in the version of WPMU you’ve installed, then that could be an issue. Contact the plugin developer and ask when they plan to update it.

You also need to check your serve’s log files to see if there are any errors that could help in figuring out the issue. If you don’t know how to do that, your hosting firm can help.

But please search the WPMU forums first and then post there if you cannot find an answer. This sounds like a plugin conflict and has nothing to do with BuddyPress.

Your questions are best asked by starting a new thread. I suggest you do so in the “How-To and Troubleshooting” forum.

    @Michael

With step four in your list, were you reinstalling your custom theme or the default bphome and bpmember themes? Did you reselect the proper theme in WPMU’s backend? Also, have you checked your server’s log files to see if there is useful information in pinpointing the issue?

I also suggest that you start a new thread as this thread is for general announcements and general questions about the new theme architecture.

Yes, this seems like a bug to me. Whereas I personally don’t recall seeing a ticket like this before in Trac, please first search Trac to see if it has been reported. If you can’t find such a report, then login to Trac using the same credentials as you do here and add a defect ticket.

    Thank you!

I have set up another blog only for buddypress due to create an online community.

You cannot set up BuddyPress on a single blog. BP is installed as a plugin suite for all of WPMU.

Each time I activate the plugin on the community’s backend page, it is also gets activated on every other blog I’ve created.

I’m not sure exactly what you are saying. BuddyPress will display (or list) all blogs, members can even access other members’ blogs, and there is a main sitewide blog. But, BP does not get activated on each blog.

You could write a custom function that will only display the main blog, filtering out all other members’ blogs, but I would imagine that your members will want to have their blogs accessible to everyone.

The blank (or white) screen issue on these forums is not the same thing as the “White Screen of Death”. A site that experiences a WSOD is basically not working, is inaccessible, and often indicates an issue with the codebase itself.

The issue with the blank screen on BP.org is not related to the codebase. Whatever is causing this issue will not affect your install.

See this thread for more information.

    Haha! You’re welcome!

I assume that your issue has been resolved. So, all you need to do now is set the light on top to green and we’re good to go.

Unless I am mistaken, I believe that there still are potential issues with setting BP_ROOT_BLOG to something other than “1”. Please read the thread and especially the two Trac tickets I reference above.

Crap! Okay, I spoke too soon. When I posted the above reply, I received a blank page. But, at least the “strong” tag inserting issue has been “solved”.

    @jeffsayre

Well, it seems that the tinyMCE (or whatever Javascript WYSIWYG Editor these bbPress forums were using) may have been causing the issue. It has been removed from the posting and editing panel and now I have no issues–especially the really annoying “strong” tag inserting issue that WebKit-based browser users experienced.

I can live without the convenience of quicktags. I’m very glad that I no longer have to deal with the “strong” tag issue.

Yep, see my “UPDATE” section in my post above. I brought this to Andy’s attention yesterday. He said he would pass it on.

But, I kind of like the white pages. It makes you feel like you are being kept from seeing something secret! ;) Perhaps it should randomly change the screen color just to add some flavor–black, blue, orange, red or even clear!

…also in my own WPMU (2.8.4) install with the latest BP trunk (1696).

The blank-page issue is specific only to these forums (BuddyPress.org/forum/…). Several of us are running the latest Leopard and Safari versions and often run into this issue after posting a reply to a thread. It seems to occur less frequently when accessing the main forums page.

As far as we can determine, it does not show any tendency to be more prevalent in one browser versus another. It also occurs for at least one of the BP moderators who is on a WinTel machine (for him both in IE and FF).

If anyone else is currently experiencing this issue, please post a quick reply here. Include your OS, browser, and noticed behavior.

UPDATE: I just logged out of BP and was redirected to a blank https://buddypress.org/ page. So, it is not a bug that only logged in people see and it is not restricted to the forums. I did suggest to Andy that the server(s) be rebooted as an easy first step. Sometimes that is all it takes. But, I think BP.org is split between several (how many) servers. I’m not sure what else may share that space. So, it may not be as easy (or at least as convinent) as I would think.

( Not found any problems yet )

Please read this entire thread. Also, as referenced in that thread, these two tickets in Trac apply:

We are aware of the problem. Andy is looking into it. It occurs in all browsers and on both Mac and WinTel platforms.

For me, the issue is most prevalent after posting a reply. The proper URL for the thread shows in the address bar of the browser but the page is blank. As you say, refreshing the browser “solves” the problem.

I have no problem with you posting in the BP forums. If I did, I would say so and/or ignore your posts. In fact, I often answer your questions or at least point you in the proper direction. I did the former above.

I also appreciate the fact that you are diligently working on learning PHP and the inner workings of WPMU and BP. It is a long road to slog.

In suggesting that a Google search would have answered your question–and more than likely much more quickly than waiting for someone to respond on this forum–I was simply making a point that since all of us moderators volunteer our time, and a lot of it at that, it helps everyone if a member first searches out a particular issue. That means if it is specific to BP, they search the BP forums first, and then Google second. If it is more of a general programming issue (or as you say above, a “basic issue”), then they search Google first then the WPMU or BP forums second. If they find nothing, then posting is recommended.

I assume that you do use Google. We all do. But, I was trying to give you a friendly reminder by first answering your question, second suggesting that issues outside of the scope of WPMU or BP can often be quickly answered via Googling, and third provide a link to the answer in such a way that reinforces that point to anyone who reads this thread.

I can’t tell you how many times a day I answer a question on these forums whose answer could have been found by searching the forums or google. I don’t mind helping out, but my time is limited and it gets old.

Just to be clear to everyone, none of the moderators on these forums are employees of Automattic. We do not get paid for the copious amounts of time we volunteer.

Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 30 seconds exceeded in /serverpath/wp-includes/class-phpass.php on line 60

This error has nothing to do with Manoj’s plugin, BuddyPress, of WPMU code. It is a standard server error that occurs when any PHP script exceeds a preset execution time limit. The default is usually set to 30 seconds.

If you have access to changing your php.ini file, then make the alterations there. If not, then you can make them in your .htaccess file (php_value max_execution_time 200).

I realize that you are working through WPMU and BP, learning as you go. That is great! But, a little googling can answer a lot of issues you will come across while learning the ins and outs of PHP programming, database management, server operation and optimization, etc.
