    Ah…so awesome…got many requests for this! It should be core, it does not make sense to invite only friends. Great initiative.

    MrMaz, the bp-groupblog plugin uses an unorthodox technique. It does exactly what you mention. It works from the plugin folder, but if the theme folder gets moved to the ACTIVE theme folder it will prioritize.

    It does something like the following for template files:

    <?php

    function groupblog_screen_blog_content() {

    global $bp, $wp;

    if ( file_exists( STYLESHEETPATH . '/groupblog/blog.php' ) )

    load_template( STYLESHEETPATH . '/groupblog/blog.php' );

    else

    load_template( WP_PLUGIN_DIR . '/bp-groupblog/groupblog/blog.php' );

    }

    ?>

    I’m using STYLESHEETPATH since that finds the file for the active theme. I prefer to stuff theme files in the active theme, just in case people may or may not a parent/child theme.

    Hope this can help. I hear good things about your plugin, can’t wait to try it.

    @Erich73, I think you will have to find or ascertain most of those answers yourself :)

    The purpose of a demo site is for you to see if it holds up to the standard of what you think is ready to be used on a life server. Next step is to install it locally or on your own domain to dig deeper. In my opinion it is fine, since I don’t know about any major bugs. Do you find those same bugs on the demo site? Have you made an event there yet and tested for yourself? Have a try…some answers take some work from your own end, no pun intended.

    Off course it will work with bp-events 1.2. It just requires a person and some time to style it. No core code needs adjusting, just the stylesheet afaik. If you now some css you are golden.

    I completely understand and feel your pain Mike, I deal with the same issues. It is a balance how you keep it simple yet powerful. Let me first explain the url structure. Buddypress creates groups using the defined constant as a path variable. By default that is ‘groups’, therefore wpmu blogs could never reside inside the same subdirectory because of conflicts. WPMU creates blogs in the root directory. Also WPMU does not allow blogs to be created with dashes or names that or less than 4 characters.

    So -> http://mjpratt.com/groups/usma-1987

    becomes -> http://mjpratt.com/usma1987

    becasue the blog gets created in the root and is stripped from the dashes.

    To stay completely in the group structure would require pulling in the correct data based on the blog id. This is certainly possible, but not a great way to develop. Therefore I’m almost inclined to think the otherway around. Utilize buddypress for profiles and pull in group related info into a blog structure. So I would redirect http://mjpratt.com/groups/usma-1987 to http://mjpratt.com/usma1987. Offcourse the group has many other components, so it is neither ideal.

    I guess what you really are after is not really a group blog, but, and yes, yet, bp-groupblog probably comes closest.

    Let’s see what we can do come bp-groupblog version 2. It is a work in progress and with community feedback in can develop into something truely and universally useful.

    @Boone Gorges, this has been on our todo list for a long time, but never got around rewritting the code. Looking forward to see your approach. We have no problem including code from the community, so you can expect a revised bp-groupblog after we review what can go and stay. Thanks for contributing.

    bp-invitefriends is not activated yet, I still need to style it to match bp-defaut…I ported it over on a different theme. I probably just use the templates from the original and see how well they hold up.

    As far as bp-events, I would suggest wp repository, that’s what I have installed on the Sandbox. I had set up a trac for it on my Dreamhost account, but they completely destroyed it while they “Upgraded” their services. I upgraded too and moved to HostGator, what a headache that was. In any case Erwin has setup a trac on his site I believe and he is continuing development.

    My time is very limited, so I have to pick carefully what I do and not do. The basic strucure for bp-events works great and that was my intent to develop. With a bit of help from the community that plugin should reach a greater height.

    By the way…I stopped by jobsee.kr. Great play on words and a nice design. I like the logo as well. So thumbs up.

    @Boone Gorges, thanks for sharing that. I’m sure that could be helpful for many people. Personally I’m actually prefering to not have a group home page at all. Instead redirect the group home page to the blog home page which has the ability to pull in most if not all group related content. This way people can even set “themes” themselves for their groups.

    @Erich73, I don’t see why it should not be compatible with 1.2. All versions after 1.1 are build on that code, at least until bp 2.0, asfaik.

    I don’t currently have a website up and running to showcase, but would love to have one. I don’t have a domain available at the moment, and thusfar subdomains have not worked for me with Dreamhost. I now switched to HostGator, hopefully I will be able to do so with them. I’ll keep you posted as I have some other plugins I ported over as well.

    This could actually spark a interesting topic on the GPL Licensing. I would suggest annyone that wishes to engage in a particular argument based on the license, to read the following page:

    http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-faq.html#DoesFreeSoftwareMeanUsingTheGPL

    As far as material that is being received through wpmudev premium which is not under the GPL license should not be able to be sold for profit, afaik. Dutchmall does mention it resells both to the public for support of the site, which I agree is wrong, depending on the license off course.

    It does indeed mention that the fee is not for the theme or the product and that all materials are created by others, but how can you charge a fee for a theme or a plugin before downloading, while at the same time state it is not for the plugin or theme? No allegation, but surely confused.

    I could not find a clear ToS on wpmudev which clarifies this violation, so it is hard to say what exactly is allowed or not and what other licenses are distributed apart fomr the GPL.

    Considering the GPL it is actually astonishing not more plugins and themes from wpmudev premium are not readily available by others providers as that seems completely legal. I am not a member of wpmudev premium, so again, I don’t know what the ToS is or licensing beyond GPL.

    If you want to go with WP + BP I would seriously just invest time in a small test setup. Get comfortable with the coding practices. Make a small purposeful plugin from scratch. Learn what makes wp different from wpmu. Anticipate change in software, lots and often, so don’t build on current solution, but look at the roadmap of both wpmu and bp.

    Consider that wp 3 is slated to be a media release and I would think it is moving more and more to cms. Waiting on that to mature would possibly be a wise decision. That doesn’t mean you should not start. Just start with what is relevant and mature now.

    Consider also if wp and bp are scalable enough. You might want to look at more powerful cms like Drupal. Drupal has a steep and painful learning curve, but it is incredibly scalable and would go the distance in what you are looking for. I don’t use Drupal myself anymore, for the reason that developing for it is slow. However, it might be a better fit.

    Also you have to consider that your idea totally tanks, put yourself in the shoes of a critical viewer and bash the heck out of your own idea. Write it down, take it serious and find solutions for it. The fact is, that it is not a new idea, it just hasn’t been done for a good reason. Find that reason and argue it.

    This error has been fixed in 1.2.4. The problem was with the introduction of setting a default groupblog theme in the backend. Now we set the default as wordpress would upon installation, so it doesn’t choke when you do not select an initial theme.

    We never came across this error, since we already selected a groupblog theme, once you do that you’ll never be able to reproduce that error. If you do, please tell us step by step how to reproduce and what your ‘saved’ settings are in the groupblog wp-admin section.

    Nothing good comes from your attitude buddy:

    “Serious omission in the code here folks …”

    I think from this point on you are pretty much on your own and are encouraged by righting your own plugin or publishing system. With a good attitude you’ll find a lot more help.

    That url structure you post is completely foreign to me….how the heck do you get there? Can you post the real domain name so we can visit your site and test?

    To undo what the plugin HALF created, just go to the wp-admin screen with the siteadmin and delete the blogs responsible. That’s all there is to it, for other problems the plugin is simply not responsible as it has nothing to do with it. Don’t give it to much credit to bp-groupblog for creating all these weird errors.

    @mariusooms

    Participant

    Are you using subdomains? bp-groupblog is not responsible for creating ugly subdomains. It mimicks the group name. Most likely you are using sub-domains, which I have not tested the plugin with and you’ve created a group called ‘example’, however you have gone back and forth in the creatrion steps of the group and created a group named ‘example857057604’, since bp will add a random number after group names that already exist. Also the error you get with the cannot modify header information stems from moving back and forth between the steps of the creation proccess, which we are aware off.

    Also, you sound a little frustrated, I’d like to point out that all these plugin are released by people volunteering their free time and a lot of it. You can always right your own plugins.

    I actually have (unofficially and without asking) updated this plugin for my personal site only and it works as far as I tested it. I don’t mind making that available, but have no interest to offer any tech support whatsoever, neither to adopt this plugin.

    I am merely saying that if anyone is looking to mess with this plugin in BP 1.1.X to let me know and I can send you a link. I don’t see any reason for leg work to update this plugin should be done twice, but don’t expect support in any form.

    It is a shame that Burt has dropped of the radar recently as he did an incredible job with this plugin. In fact I would assume with the quality of his plugin that Andy could easily take his work and make it into core. Otherwise I hope he will come back soon.

    Agreed, the lack of images in the activity stream, wire and forums is driving me bonkers as well.

    As far as I can tell, there is only a handful of capable developers here. Themers more so, but the availability of people that code this are very limited. Unfortunately these requests seem to fall on deaf ears.

    In that sense BuddyPress is not even close to being a real contender amongst other social open source packages. I hate to say it, but it is true.

    On the flipside, BP is young and a lot could happen in year. Somehow though this feature has never been able to be made a priority. Which is a shame, since with thousands of users generating pages full of text is just plain boring.

    I love BuddyPress, but definitely feel your pain.

    @mariusooms

    Same problem,started about a few days ago. Bots are signing up a few times a day, firstnamelastname19xx.

    Interesting is that I notice in my stats some ip found my site by searching for “proudly powered by WordPress MU and BuddyPress”.That could be a reason that this particular bot is finding and attacking bussypress installs.

    If this bot is getting past Captcha, I would recommend applying a reverse Captcha technique. Just do a bit of Googling on this, it uses a hidden field as a honey pot which bots will fill in, but normal users will not. When filled in you can redirect them to a page of your choosing.

    Please report your findings and how you deal with this as it would be very helpful.

    Thanks Grosbouff, very useful. Is the option in the edit screen to feature the post available to only the “site admin” or other blog roles as well? I would imagine that only the “site admin” would control what should be featured.

    Hi JJJ, what are obviouse reasons to upgrade, iyo? I’m not quite up on the latest between 2.8.4a and 2.8.5.1. (Off the top of your head.)

    I tested 0.92 with BP1.1 and can confirm it works afaik. Well done, it is a warm welcome for BP.

    I only unset one action, which adds text to most content, “This text is also available in xxx:”.

    Other than that, works as expected! Thumbs up!

    It appears to be build around BP1.0. To bad, though, I think most folks would benefit from BP1.1 as WordPress users are used to quick updates, so I’m not sure how much attention the plugin will receive. Hopefully it won’t be to long for a BP1.1 and higher version.

    Looks like a good start though on the demo.

    I answered this in another post, https://buddypress.org/forums/topic/new-blog-theme-available-for-the-groupblog-plugin, however that addresses only the dashboard link.

    If you would like to also display additional links, e.g. new post, edit posts, new page, edit pages, new link, etc. Send me a pm message and I will send you a drop in code for both your buddypress group template and bp-groupblog theme template.

    It is almost the same as the code mentioned in the post above, but also pulls in user roles and set some conditional values based on that.

    Does the bp-groupblog have support for child themes? If so, can I copy my BP child theme, set it as a child theme for Group Blogs, and (hopefully) not have to re-theme bp-groupblog?

    It has support for child themes, however in order for buddypress group related content to show you will need to set some function to pull in the group id. It should not be hard for you to adjust your bp child-theme. Just make a copy of it and do a quick study of the groupblog theme on how I pull in the group id belonging to the blog.

    The readme instructs custom bp-groupblog themes to be put into the BP child theme folder and modified. Is there a bit more specific info on that?

    If I understand you correctly, this has to to do with the theme pages that actually load inside the group component. Namely the two files blog.php and blog-latest.php. Both are loaded within the group context. Also both these files use the bp template plugin to make installing the plugin easier. However, if you wish to customize this, I encourage to move that folder to your active buddypress theme and adjust them as necessary.

    So, just to be clear, these two files are not related to the blog theme, but belong to the group and active buddypress theme.

    is there a way to add a link to the group’s blog’s dashboard under the “Blog” link the group side bar?

    Sure there is, something like this might work:

    <?php if ( bp_group_is_member() ) :?>

    <?php
    if ( get_groupblog_blog_id() ) {
    $blog_details = get_blog_details( get_groupblog_blog_id() );
    } else {
    global $current_blog;
    $blog_details = get_blog_details( $current_blog->blog_id );
    }
    ?>

    <a href="<?php echo bp_core_get_root_domain() . $blog_details->path ?>wp-admin"><?php _e('Dashboard', 'buddypress') ?></a>

    <?php endif; ?>

    This checks the member is part of the group. Then get the blog id and parse it in to get the blog details. Alternatively if we are on a blog page we pass in the current blog id. Now we can use that to fetch the blog path. So wether you are on a group page or a blog page the link should always point to the dashboard, but only show for members of the group.

    You can further enhance this code to pull in the user role and show post links depending on their role cap.

    Let me know if you need more help…I will do my best to help when I can.

    Looking at this code, we may actually create some more template functions to make constructing relevant blog links easier, but go ahead if you feel comfortable with juggling some code around.

    @mariusooms

    Check out this plugin…it will do mostly what you need, including creating a group specific blog. What more, it includes a theme for that blog and remains tied to the group, so you can pull in group information on that blog.

    However, it only allows one blog per group. Check out the details here:

    https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bp-groupblog/

    Group specific forums are already inherently part of groups since BP1.1 came out.
