Daisy – You will most appreciate the Sunday workshop that Lisa and I will be trying to coordinate then. (Being a former ‘burb commuter, I hope you’ll consider making a long day of it and join all of us geeks at a watering hole afterwards)

A long while ago, Burt Adsit wrote https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bp-community-blogs/ . I still use this plugin although I couldn’t tell you the last time Burt updated it. he has been awol lately. It still works as it doesn’t appear to be too dependent on the BP framework. For me, I have a blog I use as an “announcements” tool i.e. all registered users can write announcements which get displayed on a widget. So the plugin auto-registers each user to that blog as an “author”. Sounds like this is what you are looking for. Hope this helps.

Excellent guys. I will keep track of names and help move this forward. Even as an attendee , I am hoping it will be taped. I am already forced to choose between Lisa’s talk and Andrea’s 1st session (Andrea is strong arming me but I think I’ll do Lisa’s then head to Andrea’s 2nd :-)

One other thing to consider: In the back-end (admin) side your new admin bar location may not play nice with the WP admin theme layout. I had to put a check in the code to see if a user was on an admin page to call the right class

It’s really more a feature request…and a good one. BP handles all the functions but passes lost password requests back to WP which blows because it takes unsuspecting uses into eh Wp back-end, under a different look/theme. Same thing plagues blog posting as well, which is fine for sites that want to create a user/blogs owner kinda ting (the blog owners expect some sort of admin) but for the rest of us making use of BP’s great social/engagement features, it just causes confusion unnecessarily.

Marcus – I agree with you, the markup seems a bit too specialized this time and I have not figured out why Andy went the extra mile. In addition, the directory search functions are have a few bugs, in my experience. About to post this now.

@reinergaer Don’t confuse Andy’s plugin (which draws external blog RSS feeds into a group) with the under-development Group Blog plugin which adds full blogging functionality seamlessly into a group

@Boone – We’ll have it ready NLY this weekend and send the patch your way. It’s nothing ground breaking but does focus on making the email look as simple, easy to consume as possible and with clear actions (for ex. changing “To view this message” (recipient already is!) to “To reply to this message” kind of thing. Prior to doing that, i can’t tell you how many users tried replying by actually replying to the email :-). We’ll also be adding the Topic as a ref (missing) to put the message into better context.

@Boone – Cool. Brent and I have decided to go with your version for our interim rollout tonight. Yours just implements users options much better. However, we are going to redo the user sent email on notification as we don’t think it steers novice users well to action 9from experience) Not a big deal and I hope you aren’t offended. It involves a few extra variables and copy tweaks. I’ll post you when it’s done.

problem solved for those of you wanting to remove the Admin Bar from the WP back end:

    remove_action( ‘admin_footer’, ‘bp_core_admin_bar’ ); credit: Jeff Sayre

It would be awesome if there was an actions catalog.

Perhaps we should join forces, Boone but my partner in crime Brent Layman (westpointer) and I have a working plugin that does the same thing (albeit w/o the elegant options you have)

    https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/buddypressbbpress-email-notification/

Are you aware and maybe we can share code.

@bobblegom I am BP all the way but shouldn’t you compare Google Trends on “drupal” vs “buddypress” not “drupal social” ?

@candydate I just see the release of 2.7, 2.8 all the way to 2.8.4, all of @donncha’s hard work and the aforementioned community buzz and conclude that the wp community is not moving slowly.

I run a BP community of USMA alumni and not only is it stable but they generally love it. I am more of a hack than true coder and I have had no issues. It is def a serious professional grade tool. The ease of customization alone (I have many friends who run Drupal sites and it’s always fun to hear them defend the arcane way Drupal does things.

WP and BP have a lot of growth ahead and they are by no means perfect but the openness and willingness to change and grow is evident (just see any IRC chat with all the developers)

Happy to answer more specific questions on resource requirements and what you were not able to learn from your dummy site.

“low development activity on WP MU in general” – the WPMU folks have been on fire lately, not sure what slow dev universe you speak of. I second Jeff’s comments.

As for some of the features you speak of, a simple cruise through Andy’s http://testbp.org would answer those questions. Compared to the mind-numbing admin work required for Drupal and Joomla, BP is a joy. Of course, if you don’t want to do any work under the hood, go with Ning and have your entire experience dictated to you.

Finally starting diving into 1.1 on my dev site and encountered a strange issue.

    wpmu 2.8.4a, bbPress 1.0

just using plain default theme for now. forums work great. saved all my old posts. all seems ok BUT

on back end no option panel for profile fields. on front end all profile data is gone but name and website. Under My Profile it just has Public (no edit profile or change avatar)

Is this just a butchered install or something else?

Peter – I use “Big Tie”support for MadMimi http://support.hfconcepts.com/. It auto syncs my BP member list like a champ and is well worth the $40

Am I missing something? All I had to do to achieve a solution to this was to create two new fields in basic called FirstName and LastName and make them mandatory on signup. Now I can ref them all I want in code later. What is the point of this huge plugin? Thee is no need to be dependent on users updating their profile since they can join without filling in these fields.

just noticed you commented on this thread:

    https://bbpress.org/forums/topic/howto-disable-registration

Do I understand that it doesn’t prevent new users, it just prevents registering from the mysite/forums/registration.php process and still allows auto joining via the BP process?

    @mikepratt

ipstenu – well thx for the suggestion. so far no go. What is see mr “mail.ru” dude doing is back door registering for the bbPress forum section. He then shows up as a new user in BP having bypassed the normal process. Looking for ban plugins for that if avail.

Jeff – I got one too. She mentioned she didn’t like Goatee’s. Maybe that has something to do with it
