In reply to: Big Akismet Problems
Just to clarify, it looks like the cron isn’t firing – just checked my bp_activity_meta table and there are hundreds of entries from much longer than a day or two ago.
It’s still listed on another one of my sites but it is again labelled as X No action exists.
If you need anyone to test anything, just shout up!
In reply to: Big Akismet ProblemsCould this be something to do with the wp-cron job Paul that I’m seeing not firing for akismet and BP?
Only problem now is after deleting the bloody cron job, I can’t re-queue it.
I don’t want to hijack this thread by the way, if it’s a separate issue, tell me to sod off!
I think I may have made a massive schoolboy error here Paul.
I actually deleted the wp-cron job for this last night, thinking that when I re-saved the BP settings for akismet that it would re-queue it up.
That isn’t the case, and I’m struggling to have it set up again now.
I’ve tried deactivating and reactivating BP, resaving settings in akismet etc.
Does anyone have any idea at what point this is placed in cron?
I’ve been able to re-schedule all other cron jobs in the past after deletion by setting up the plugin involved again, but I’m a bit stuck here.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance!
Hey Paul, just checking back in here. Is there any way to check if this function is firing, or if I delete the cron job, can I resave settings anywhere to reschedule it?
Your blog isn’t set to ‘Discourage search engines from indexing this site’ in the backend under Settings—>Reading is it?
No forum stuff will be posted to the stream in that case.
Looks like this patch in WP ISN’T hitting BP.
See this link for all details:
Thanks for this guys, yep issue resolved for now! 🙂
In reply to: Bizarre avatar Issue After BP 1.6.2 UpdateThink you are right:

In reply to: Bizarre avatar Issue After BP 1.6.2 UpdateI’m not sure if it’s a dimension issue. If I create 190×190 square images of the original images that won’t upload, then they upload just fine.
I’m pretty sure it’s not a file size issue as some images that are smaller than images that can be uploaded will still fail.In reply to: Bizarre avatar Issue After BP 1.6.2 UpdateTRAC ticket submitted here
In reply to: Bizarre avatar Issue After BP 1.6.2 UpdateIt’s a bit weird as it will let me upload a couple of images, but not many.
It looks like it isn’t calling the crop overlay and it’s freaking out.
This was totally fine in the last version so hopefully won’t be a big issue to get sorted.
Avatars re absolutely key to my site though as it’s for actors and models, so fingers crossed we can get it fixed ASAP.
Thanks for confirming the issue though, I’ll now put it in TRAC.
In reply to: Bizarre avatar Issue After BP 1.6.2 UpdateOkay it’s definitely a BP 1.6.2 error.
Here it is:
Fatal error: Call to undefined function wp_get_image_editor() in /home/mytestsp/public_html/wp-content/plugins/buddypress/bp-core/bp-core-avatars.php on line 521
Do I ned to make a TRAC ticket for this?
Hi Karma/ Paul,
Thanks for the explanation guys.
How would I verify if this was firing?
The cron job is definitely being updated in terms of the times it shows for running. It seems to run once per day.
The thing is, I have just set up a brand new vanilla BP install of the latest version of BP 1.6.1 and after using the WP Cron Dashboard plugin to check on cron jobs, it too shows that NO action exists.
https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-cron-dashboard/
That is now 3 separate installs it’s showing no action for.
Perhaps there has been an issue on a BP update, but i’ve checked crons regularly from the dashboard to make sure they are all still there, and I’ve never noticed an issue with this job in the past.
All other crons show just fine WITH actions existing.
Perhaps someone else could install the plugin and see if they get the same result.
To set up the cron, you should only need to post to the activity stream once after installing BP on a fresh install.
The job will then show up under the Tools —> Wp Cron menu in the dashboard.
Hopefully we’ll work it out.
Let me know how I can help out.
@djpaul hey Paul, tested on a clean install of BP 1.5.7 and the problem ISN’T there. Captions work perfectly in the stream.
Will update ticket.
No worries Paul, just thought it might be a tweak to the last patch. I don’t mind sending over some beer money to anyone that has a few minutes to take a look.
I can try and replicate this in BP 1.5.7
Just for the record, are you seeing it in 1.6.1?
Will report back if I can get an install of 1.5.7 up somewhere.
Sorry to bump this guys!
Just looking for a patch by the weekend if poss!
@rogercoathup totally agree Roger. I think the best solution would be to build in an option for site owners to decide which way they would like the stream to behave.
Would be awesome if that were possible!
Sorry guys, ignore this, we’ve tracked it down to the theme engine I’m using.
Thanks for the time though

Hey Paul, I don’t think it’s being caused by CSS as the images that display correctly (the ones that HAVE captions) have the exact same classes assigned to them:
activity-list .activity-content img.thumbnail {
border: 2px solid #EEEEEE;
float: left;
margin: 0 10px 5px 0;
}
.activity-inner img {
max-width: 100% !important;
}
img {
opacity: 1 !important;
}
img {
border: 0 none;
vertical-align: middle;
}Something is causing captions to misbehave somehow, and when a caption isn’t present we get just this bog standard 100x100px image, regardless of the original dimensions of the post image.
Very bizarre.
Got @hnla looking at it, but the poor guy has been working like mad for me lately, so just wanted to put this out there incase anyone had seen this before and could cut down some time on us searching for the issue.
Cheers everyone.
Thanks for all the info everyone.
I don’t have too much of an opinion on the bumping, but I do think the original activity stream post SHOULD be updated if the content changes.
Sometimes I’ll publish a post, then 10 minutes later change the post image etc.
Would be nice if the stream would take into account this update, even if it doesn’t bump it to the top.
What does everyone else think?
In reply to: Site Notices vs. MessagesYou’ve got both options covered there.
Firstly i would most definitely implement an email sign up form on your site anyway. Link it up with an autoresponder so that people receive a nice email, or sequence of emails from you when they sign up, so that they build trust and open your emails in future.
In terms of importing your list. When you do that, Mailchimp, Aweber (who ever you go with) records how the list was implemented.
It’s perfectly allowed, BUT if you get spam complaints they will ask you to remove the entire list, or close your account.
I had this once, where I had a list from a trade show I exhibited at.
First mailshot went out to 2000 people, not ONE complaint.
I thought cool, I’ll drop another one a few weeks later.
About 6 weeks later I sent out another mail (only 2 mails in 6 weeks), and 11 spam complaints.
Shows how unpredictable it is. Mailchimp asked me to remove the list or leave.
HAD that list all been double opt-in i.e. they sign up, get a confirmation which they then have to click a ‘yes sign me up’ link on, then Mailchimp wouldn’t have been bothered. We simply cleanse the list of the complainers.
Email marketing and list building is a very tricky business, as you always get the idiots reporting spam which ISN’T spam. This is either thorough laziness or through ignorance of not knowing what that ‘spam’ button does in their email client.
Most people think it just deleted the email, not knowing it actually sends a complaint to their ISP, which thus gets forwarded on to the client that sent it.
You could import the list, send out what looks like an email confirmation link to sign them up to your newsletter that then actually migrates them to another list.
That’s possible, then they WOULD actually be opted in.
You could only send that ONE email to the list you import though, and even then you may get a few complaints.
Other than that, create a blog post that you could make members aware of asking them to sign up, or direct them to the widget sign up form you are implementing.
Not gonna happen overnight but the quicker you dod it, the quicker your list builds.
In reply to: Site Notices vs. MessagesHaraldo, there is nothing wrong with your install, there is NO built in way to message all users in BP. The site notification will merely place a widget type notice at the top of your sidebar for all logged in users, which thy can then choose o close. It isn’t emailed or passed as a private message.
There are a couple of old plugins for this such as: https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/buddypress-mass-messaging/screenshots/
It’s an option that is useful, HOWEVER, I would strongly recommend you export your users to CSV. Again export plugins are available and import people into a 3rd party email service like Mailchimp.
This is far better for email marketing, however in itself is a bit tricky, as unless your members have signed up or opted into a list, it’s technically breaking the T&C’s of all 3rd party mail apps.
The problem with sending email direct from your server is if you get people unwittingly or deliberately labelling your mail as junk/ spam in clients like hotmail, yahoo and gmail, the ip address of your server can get blacklisted.
At that point NO mail at all from your server is going to get through to those services, not just for the accounts that labelled you as spam but your server will be blocked and mail won’t reach anyone with a hotmail address etc.
Sounds dramatic but it could kill your community if you aren’t careful.
You should always use a 3rd party.
Rules are still incredibly stringent though. You are generally allowed one spam complaint in every 1000 emails sent.
Hope that helps!
By the way, loving BP 1.6. Just testing for quirks now, but all looks mighty stable! Loving the new Activity tab in the dashboard.
I would regularly find myself diving into the DB to change activity posts. Can do it all from the backend now.

Hey Paul!
Thanks for your reply mate.
I’ve just ran the same tests on BP 1.6 Beta 1 and we’re 50% there.
The ‘from address’ now obeys perfectly. The ‘From name’ still sends it from the site’s name.
Not a disaster, as at least now people can hit reply to that notification and actually send a reply to the correct address as opposed to noreply@mysite.com etc.
Anything that can be done to address the from name, or does BP need to work like that?
In reply to: How-to: Membership Protected ContentS2member is without a doubt THE BEST WP/ BP membership plugin there is.
I run a very complex site with varying member levels/ protected content and S2Member has a feature for everything! It’s amazing!
